Shurayh bin Ubayd said: Jubayr bin Nufayr, Kathir bin Murrah, Amr bin al-Aswad, Sayyiduna al-Miqdam bin Ma'dikarib and Sayyiduna Abu Umamah narrated to me that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Will this matter remain only among your people?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Then enjoin them to treat us well." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Quraysh: "I exhort you to fear Allah Almighty in this regard, lest you subject my Ummah to hardship after me." Then he said to the people: "Soon there will be rulers after me, so obey them, for the ruler is like a shield by which one is protected. If they remain upright, are God-fearing and command you to do good, then that is well; and if they do evil and command you to do it, then (its burden will be) upon them, and you will be free of it." After this the narrator mentioned the full hadith.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Muhammad bin Isma'il bin Ayyash, who is da'if (weak).
