Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Once we were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); we were about eighty men, all from Quraysh, and every one of them was a Qurashi. By Allah! I have never seen faces more handsome than the faces of those people that day. They mentioned women and began talking about them, until I wished that they would fall silent. Sayyiduna Abdullah said: Then I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He recited the testimony of faith and then said: "To proceed: O people of Quraysh! You will be the custodians of this matter as long as you do not disobey Allah Almighty. When you disobey Him, He will send against you people who will strip you just as a stick is stripped." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this regarding a stick that was in his blessed hand. Then he stripped the stick, and it became smooth and white.
Ahmad and Abu Ya'la recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. The narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih, and the narrators of Abu Ya'la are thiqat (trustworthy).
