Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were in a house in which there were some men from the Muhajirun and the Ansar. Meanwhile the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us, and every one of us began to make room, hoping that he might sit beside him. But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood by the door, took hold of its two doorposts and said: "The rulers will be from Quraysh. I have a great right over you, and they too will have a right, as long as they do three things: when mercy is sought from them, they show mercy; when they judge, they act with justice; and when they make a covenant, they fulfil it. Whoever among them does not do so, upon him will be the curse of Allah Almighty, the angels and all mankind." In one narration the wording is: "When they are entrusted, they fulfil it (that is, they return the trust)."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains Abdullah bin Farrukh, whom Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy); he said: He sometimes narrates in contradiction (to others). There is criticism concerning this narrator. The remaining narrators of al-Mu'jam al-Kabir are thiqat (trustworthy).
