Al-Ahnaf bin Qays said: I used to hear Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) say: "Whatever door a man of Quraysh enters by, people will enter along with him." Al-Ahnaf bin Qays said: I did not understand what his words meant, until Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was stabbed. He ordered Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) to lead the people in prayer, which he would do for three days. He also instructed that food be prepared for the people during those three days, until the members of the Shura agreed upon one man. When the people returned from the funeral, the food had been laid out, but because of the grief they were in, they did not eat. Sayyiduna al-Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) came and said: "O people! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, and after him we continued to eat and drink; Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, and still we continued to eat and drink. So, O people, eat this food." Then Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) stretched out his hand, and the people stretched out their hands too and began to eat and drink. At that moment I understood the meaning of what Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had said.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Ali bin Zayd, whose hadith is hasan (good), and the rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
