Hadith Beginning with the Letter Alif (أ)

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not tell you of a deed which, if you do it, you will catch up with those before you and surpass those after you? Praise Allah after every prayer, glorify Him and proclaim His greatness, that is, thirty-three times, thirty-three times and thirty-four times."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not tell you about the people of Paradise? Every weak (humble) person whom people regard as weak, yet if he were to swear by Allah, Allah Almighty would surely fulfil it. Shall I not tell you about the people of Hell? Every harsh, gluttonous, coarse and arrogant person."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not tell you about your best rulers and your worst rulers? Your best rulers are those whom you love and who love you, for whom you pray and who pray for you. And your worst rulers are those whom you hate and who hate you, whom you curse and who curse you."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not tell you about the best of witnesses? He is the one who gives his testimony before he is asked for it."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not tell you about the person who holds the best rank among people? A man who holds the reins of his horse in the path of Allah until he dies or is martyred. Shall I not tell you about the one who comes next to him in rank? A man who lives in seclusion in a mountain pass, establishes the prayer, pays zakah and keeps away from the evils of people. Shall I not tell you about the worst of people? A man who is asked for something in the name of Allah and does not give."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not tell you about the best households of the Ansar? The household of Banu al-Najjar, then the household of Banu Abd al-Ashhal, then the household of Banu al-Harith, then al-Khazraj, then the household of Banu Sa'idah; and in all the households of the Ansar there is goodness."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not tell you who is the best among you and who is the worst? The best among you is the one from whom good is hoped and from whose evil people are safe, and the worst among you is the one from whom no good is hoped and from whose evil people are not safe."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not tell you about your men who are among the people of Paradise? The prophet is in Paradise, the martyr is in Paradise, the truthful one (siddiq) is in Paradise, the child (who dies in infancy) is in Paradise, and the man who visits his (Muslim) brother on the far side of the city purely for the sake of Allah is in Paradise. Shall I not tell you about your women who are among the people of Paradise? The woman who is very loving, bears many children and repeatedly turns back (to her husband), who, when she is wronged (or she herself commits a wrong), says to her husband: 'This is my hand in your hand; I will not taste sleep until you are pleased with me.'"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not tell you of a supplication which, when some worldly distress or affliction befalls any of you and he supplicates with it, his affliction is removed? It is the supplication of Dhu al-Nun (Prophet Yunus, peace be upon him): 'La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu min al-zalimin' (There is no true deity except You; You are free of all imperfection; indeed I have been among the wrongdoers)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not tell you about the prayer of the hypocrite? He delays the Asr prayer so much that when the sun becomes (pale) like the fat of a cow, he then offers it."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not tell you about what I fear for you more than the False Messiah (al-Masih al-Dajjal)? It is hidden shirk (showing off): that a man stands to pray and beautifies his prayer only because he sees someone looking at him."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not tell you of a deed that removes the impurity (and rancour) of the heart? It is fasting three days of every month."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not tell you about the one for whom the Fire will be forbidden tomorrow (on the Day of Resurrection)? The Fire is forbidden for everyone who is gentle, easygoing, close to people and good-natured."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not guide you to one of the gates of Paradise? It is saying 'La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' (There is no might and no power except with Allah)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not guide you to a jihad in which there is no thorn (that is, no hardship and fighting)? It is Hajj to the House of Allah."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not guide you to Sayyid al-Istighfar (the master of seeking forgiveness)? It is this: 'Allahumma anta rabbi, la ilaha illa anta, khalaqtani wa ana 'abduka, wa ana 'ala 'ahdika wa wa'dika mastata'tu, a'udhu bika min sharri ma sana'tu, wa abu'u laka bi-ni'matika 'alayya, wa a'tarifu bi-dhunubi, faghfir li dhunubi innahu la yaghfiru al-dhunuba illa anta' (O Allah, You are my Lord; there is no true deity except You. You created me and I am Your servant, and I abide by Your covenant and promise as far as I am able. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favours upon me and I confess my sins, so forgive me my sins, for none forgives sins except You). Whoever says these words in the evening and his appointed time (of death) comes to him before morning, Paradise becomes obligatory for him; and whoever says them in the morning and his appointed time comes to him before evening, Paradise becomes obligatory for him as well."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not guide you to a planting that is far better than this (worldly planting)? Say 'Subhan Allah' (Glory be to Allah), 'Al-hamdu lillah' (All praise is for Allah), 'La ilaha illa Allah' (There is no true deity except Allah) and 'Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest); for each of these words a tree is planted for you in Paradise."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not guide you to a word from beneath the Throne, from the treasures of Paradise? Say 'La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' (There is no might and no power except with Allah), and Allah Almighty says: 'My servant has submitted and surrendered (himself to Me).'"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not tell you of a deed that brings more reward than your remembering Allah continuously through the night and the day? Say: 'Al-hamdu lillahi 'adada ma khalaq, al-hamdu lillahi mil'a ma khalaq, al-hamdu lillahi 'adada ma fi al-samawati wa ma fi al-ard, al-hamdu lillahi 'adada ma ahsa kitabuh, wal-hamdu lillahi 'ala ma ahsa kitabuh, wal-hamdu lillahi 'adada kulli shay', wal-hamdu lillahi mil'a kulli shay'' (All praise is for Allah as many times as what He has created; all praise is for Allah filling what He has created; all praise is for Allah as many times as what is in the heavens and what is in the earth; all praise is for Allah as many times as what His Book has recorded; all praise is for Allah for what His Book has recorded; all praise is for Allah as many times as everything; all praise is for Allah filling everything), and likewise glorify Allah (Subhan Allah) in the same measure. Learn them yourself and teach them to your descendants after you."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not tell you of something that is better for you than a servant? When you are about to lie down on your bed, glorify Allah, 'Subhan Allah' (Glory be to Allah), thirty-three times, praise Him, 'Al-hamdu lillah' (All praise is for Allah), thirty-three times, and proclaim His greatness, 'Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest), thirty-four times."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not tell you of the deeds by which Allah Almighty wipes away sins and increases good deeds? Performing ablution completely and well despite difficulty (such as intense cold), taking many steps to the mosques, and waiting for the next prayer after a prayer."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not tell you of the deeds by which Allah Almighty wipes away sins and raises ranks? Performing ablution completely even at times of hardship and difficulty, taking many steps to the mosques, and waiting for the next prayer after a prayer. That is ribat (that is, true guarding at the frontier), that is ribat, that is ribat."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not guide you both to something better than what you have asked me for? When you are about to lie down on your beds, say 'Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest) thirty-four times, say 'Al-hamdu lillah' (All praise is for Allah) thirty-three times and say 'Subhan Allah' (Glory be to Allah) thirty-three times, for that is far better for you both than a servant."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Should I not feel modesty before a man before whom even the angels feel modesty?" (He (peace and blessings be upon him) meant Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him).)

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not teach you words which, when you say them, Allah Almighty will forgive you, even if you have already been forgiven? Say: 'La ilaha illa Allah al-'Aliyy al-'Azim, la ilaha illa Allah al-Hakim al-Karim, la ilaha illa Allah, subhan Allah rabbi al-samawati al-sab'i wa rabbi al-'arsh al-'azim, al-hamdu lillahi rabbi al-'alamin' (There is no true deity except Allah, the Most High, the Most Great; there is no true deity except Allah, the Most Wise, the Most Generous; there is no true deity except Allah; glory be to Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the Mighty Throne; all praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not teach you words to say when you lie down on your bed, so that if you die that very night you will die upon the natural religion (fitrah), and if you reach the morning you will attain good? Say: 'Allahumma aslamtu nafsi ilayk, wa wajjahtu wajhi ilayk, wa fawwadtu amri ilayk, raghbatan wa rahbatan ilayk, wa alja'tu zahri ilayk, la malja'a wa la manja minka illa ilayk, amantu bi-kitabika alladhi anzalt, wa bi-nabiyyika alladhi arsalt' (O Allah, I have submitted myself to You, turned my face to You, entrusted my affair to You, out of hope and fear of You, and relied upon You for support; there is no refuge and no escape from You except to You. I believe in Your Book which You revealed and in Your Prophet whom You sent)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not teach you words to say at times of distress and hardship? (They are:) 'Allahu Allahu rabbi, la ushriku bihi shay'an' (Allah, Allah is my Lord; I associate nothing with Him)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not teach you words that you should recite? (They are:) 'Subhan Allahi 'adada khalqih, subhan Allahi 'adada khalqih, subhan Allahi 'adada khalqih, subhan Allahi rida nafsih, subhan Allahi rida nafsih, subhan Allahi rida nafsih, subhan Allahi zinata 'arshih, subhan Allahi zinata 'arshih, subhan Allahi zinata 'arshih, subhan Allahi midada kalimatih, subhan Allahi midada kalimatih, subhan Allahi midada kalimatih' (Glory be to Allah as many times as the number of His creation, three times; glory be to Allah as much as pleases Him, three times; glory be to Allah as much as the weight of His Throne, three times; glory be to Allah as much as the ink of His words, three times)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not teach you words such that, even if you owed a debt as large as (the mountain of) Sabir, Allah Almighty would pay it off on your behalf? Say: 'Allahumma-kfini bi-halalika 'an haramik, wa aghnini bi-fadlika 'amman siwak' (O Allah, suffice me with what You have made lawful against what You have made unlawful, and make me independent by Your bounty of all besides You)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not teach you a deed by which you will catch up with those who have gone ahead of you and surpass those who come after you, and no one will be better than you except one who does the like of what you do? After every prayer, say 'Subhan Allah' (Glory be to Allah), 'Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest) and 'Al-hamdu lillah' (All praise is for Allah) thirty-three times each."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not tell you about the people of Paradise? They are those who are regarded as weak and the oppressed (in the world)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not tell you about the greatest of sins (the major sins)? Associating partners with Allah, disobedience to parents, and speaking falsehood."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not tell you of the best of your deeds, the purest in the sight of your King (Allah), the one that raises your ranks the highest, which is better for you than spending gold and silver, and better for you than meeting your enemy so that you strike their necks and they strike your necks? That deed is the remembrance of Allah."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Shall I not tell you what slander (and mischief-making) is? It is carrying tales and spreading discord among people."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Listen! The family of so-and-so are not my friends and supporters; rather, my Wali (friend and protector) is only Allah Almighty and the righteous believers."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Beware! Indeed, the tribulation will arise from this direction, from where the horn of Satan rises."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Beware! Indeed, strength is archery. Beware! Surely, strength is archery. Beware! Surely, strength is archery."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Listen! Soon Allah Almighty will open the land for you and you will be spared the toil (of enemies), so let none of you neglect practising (and playing) with his arrows."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Listen! I declare myself free of the intimate friendship of every intimate friend. If I were to take anyone as an intimate friend (khalil), I would have taken Abu Bakr, but indeed your companion (that is, I myself) is the intimate friend (khalil) of Allah."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Listen! Indeed, the False Messiah (al-Masih al-Dajjal) will be blind in the right eye, as though his eye were a swollen grape. Last night I saw myself in a dream near the Ka'bah, and there was a man of brown complexion, more handsome than any brown-complexioned man you have ever seen. His locks (of hair) hung between his shoulders; his hair was straight, and water was dripping from his head. He had placed his hands on the shoulders of two men and was circling the House of Allah between them. I asked: 'Who is this?' They said: 'This is the Messiah, son of Maryam (peace be upon them both).' Then behind him I saw another man whose hair was tightly curled; he was blind in the right eye, and to my eyes he most resembled Ibn Qatan. He had placed his hands on the shoulders of a man and was circling the House of Allah. I asked: 'Who is this?' They replied: 'This is the False Messiah (al-Masih al-Dajjal).'"
