Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Hawalah (may Allah be pleased with him) states: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was in the shade of a tree, and with him was a scribe to whom he was dictating. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ibn Hawalah! Shall I not have something written for you?" I said: "I do not know; whatever Allah and His Messenger choose for me, that will be best for me." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away. The narrator Isma'il once narrated these words: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began dictating to that man. Then he asked: "O Ibn Hawalah! Shall I not have something written for you?" I said: "I do not know; whatever Allah and His Messenger choose for me, that will be right." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from me and kept dictating to the person writing beside him. The narrator says: I looked, and in that writing there was a mention of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and I realised that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) would only be mentioned in connection with good. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O Ibn Hawalah! Shall I not have something written for you?" I said: "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ibn Hawalah! What will you do in the time of trials, when they emerge from the corners of the earth like the horns of cattle?" I said: "I do not know! Whatever Allah and His Messenger choose for me (that will be right)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What will you do then, when another trial comes after the first one, and compared to that second trial the first will be as though a rabbit had leapt?" I said: "I do not know; whatever Allah and His Messenger choose for me (that will be right)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Follow this man." At that moment a man was walking away from there. I ran after him, took hold of his shoulder, and turning his face towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I asked: "This one?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "Yes!" And that man was Sayyiduna Uthman al-Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him).

Jubayr bin Nufayr states: Once we were encamped with Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him); this was after the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Murrah bin Ka'b al-Bahzi (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: "By Allah! Had I not heard something from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I would not have stood up in this place." When Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) heard that he was mentioning the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he made the people sit down. Then Sayyiduna Murrah bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) stated: Once we were sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by us; he had combed his hair and gathered it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A trial will soon emerge from beneath the feet (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are) from beneath the two feet of this man, and at that time this man and those who follow him will be upon guidance." The narrator says: I rose, took hold of both shoulders of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), turned him towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked: "This man?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes! This man, and whoever follows him, will be upon guidance at that time." Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Hawalah al-Azdi (may Allah be pleased with him), who was near the pulpit, stood up and said: "You are the narrator of this?" He replied: "Yes." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Hawalah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah! I too was present at that gathering. Had I known that there was someone in this army who would confirm my word, I would have been the first to speak about it." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: The hadith narrated by Sayyiduna Murrah bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) was also recorded by al-Tirmidhi.

It is reported about Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Once she and Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) were sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I wish that one of my Companions were with me, so that we could talk." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Shall I send for Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), so that he may talk with you?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Shall I send for Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), so that he may talk with you?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, rather I will send for Uthman." Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and as he was coming in, the two women rose and let down the curtain. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him): "You will be killed and you will be martyred, so be patient - may Allah Almighty grant you patience - and do not take off the shirt that Allah Almighty has clothed you with; that shirt will remain on you for twelve years and six months, until you appear before Allah Almighty, and Allah Almighty will be pleased with you." Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "It would be fitting if the Prophet of Allah were to supplicate for patience for me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah! Grant him patience." Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) went out and left, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept saying: "May Allah Almighty grant you patience; you will drink the cup of martyrdom, and you will die in a state in which you are fasting, and you will break your fast with me."

Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to me: "This is Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) turned to Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: "I ask you by Allah: if I say something false, tell me so, and if I speak the truth, tell me so as well." Then Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to her: "Do you know that you and I were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fainted? I asked you: 'Do you think the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has passed away?' You said: 'I do not know.' Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regained consciousness, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Open the door for him.' I said to you: 'Does the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mean my father or your father?' You said: 'I do not know.' It is reported about Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the people became agitated over the matter of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: "O people! Do not kill this elder; rather, ask him to set matters right. For no nation ever killed its Prophet but that its affairs did not become right until the blood of seventy thousand of them had been shed, and no nation ever killed its Caliph but that its affairs did not become right until the blood of forty thousand of them had been shed." But those people paid no attention to what Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) said, and they martyred Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). Once Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) met Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) on the road and asked: "Where do you intend to go?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "I intend to go to the land of Iraq." Some of the companions of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) wanted to attack him, but Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Leave him, for he is one of us, the People of the House." When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Ibn Ma'qil: "This is the year forty, and at its head there will be a reconciliation. Al-Hajjaj ordered two men who were near the couch to make room for him; the two of them made room for him, and he sat down. Al-Hajjaj said to him: "May Allah bless your father! Do you know that your father narrated a hadith to Abdul Malik bin Marwan from your grandfather Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him)?" He asked: "May Allah Almighty have mercy on you, which hadith was it? Present that hadith." Al-Hajjaj said: "It was the hadith of the people of Egypt, from the time when they had besieged Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)." He said: "I know that hadith." "Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) came while Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was under siege. He walked up and came to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him); the people made room for him and he went inside. He said: 'O Commander of the Believers! Peace be upon you.' Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'And upon you be peace. O Abdullah bin Salam! What has brought you?' He replied: 'I have come to stand by you until I drink the cup of martyrdom or Allah Almighty grants you victory. My view of these people is that they will kill you; if they kill you, that will be better for you and evil for them.' Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'By the right I have over you, I ask you to go out to them; (perhaps there is) some good which Allah Almighty will bring about through you, or some evil which Allah Almighty will ward off through you.' So he listened and obeyed. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) went out to them. When those people saw Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him), they gathered together, thinking that he had perhaps brought them some news that would please them. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up to deliver a sermon; after praising and extolling Allah Almighty, he said: 'To proceed: Indeed, Allah Almighty sent Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner; he gave glad tidings of Paradise to whoever obeyed him and warned of punishment whoever disobeyed him. And Allah Almighty made those who followed him prevail over all religions, even though the polytheists disliked it. Then Allah Almighty chose a dwelling place for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): He chose Madinah for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), made it the abode of emigration and made it the abode of faith. By Allah! The angels have continually surrounded Madinah since the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came here, and from the time the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came here until now, the sword of Allah has remained sheathed with regard to you.' After this, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'Indeed, Allah Almighty sent Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) with the truth. So whoever is guided is guided only by the guidance of Allah Almighty, and whoever goes astray goes astray only after the clear explanation and the proof. In former times, whenever any Prophet was killed, seventy thousand people were killed in exchange for him, all of them killed in exchange for that Prophet; and whenever any Caliph was killed, thirty-five thousand people were killed in exchange for him, all of them killed in exchange for him. So do not hasten to kill this elder. By Allah! Whoever among you kills him will appear before Allah Almighty on the Day of Resurrection with his hand cut off and paralysed. And know that whatever right a child has over a father, this elder has a like right over you.' The narrator says: The people began saying: 'The Jew has lied! The Jew has lied!' Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'You are lying, by Allah, and you are sinners! I am not a Jew; I am one of the Muslims; Allah Almighty, His Messenger and the believers know this. And this verse of the Qur'an was revealed about me: "Say: Allah is sufficient as a witness between me and you, and whoever has knowledge of the Book." And Allah Almighty revealed another verse (about me) as well: "Say: Have you considered, if it is from Allah and you have disbelieved in it, and a witness from the Children of Israel has testified to something like it, and he believed while you were arrogant?"' The narrator says: Those people then rose, went in to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) and slaughtered him as a hullan is slaughtered." The narrator Shu'ayb says: I asked Abdul Malik bin Umayr: "What is a hullan?" He replied: "A lamb." The narrator says: Sayyiduna Uthman al-Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) had said to Kathir bin al-Salt: "O Kathir! By Allah! Tomorrow I will be killed." Kathir replied: "No, rather Allah Almighty will raise your standing and disgrace your enemy." This exchange took place three times, and each time Kathir said the same. Then he said: "O Commander of the Believers." Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I saw the Messenger of Allah in a dream, and with him were Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: 'O Uthman! Tomorrow you will be with us, and tomorrow you will be martyred.' So, by Allah! I will be martyred." The narrator says: Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) went out to the people; he came before they dispersed and said: "O people of Egypt! O killers of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)! You have killed the Commander of the Believers. By Allah! He had Ammar flogged, he had Abu Dharr expelled, he reserved the pasture for himself, and you say that we martyred him while he was one who fasted and prayed voluntary prayers?" Masruq said to him: "By Allah! Imam Malik bin Anas states: When Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred, his body lay cast on the refuse heap of Banu so-and-so for three days. Then twelve men came there, among them my grandfather Malik bin Abi Amir; besides him there were Huwaytib bin Abdul Uzza, Hakim bin Hizam, Abdullah bin al-Zubayr and A'ishah bint Uthman. They had a lamp in a container with them. They lifted his body and carried it on a door, and his head was knocking against the door, 'taq, taq', until they brought him to al-Baqi'. They disagreed among themselves about his funeral prayer, and Hakim bin Hizam, or perhaps Huwaytib bin Abdul Uzza, led his funeral prayer; this doubt is from the narrator Abdul Rahman. Then they intended to bury him, and a man from Banu Mazin stood up and said: "If you bury him with the Muslims, I will tell the people about it tomorrow." So they carried his body and brought it to the place called Hushsh Kawkab. When they began lowering him into the grave, A'ishah, the daughter of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), began to cry out. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said to her: "Be quiet! By Allah! If you do it again, I will strike you between your eyes." When they had buried Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) and levelled the earth over him, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said to her: "Now cry out as much as you see fit." Imam Malik states: Before this, Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) once passed by the place of Hushsh Kawkab and said: "A righteous man will be buried here."
Al-Tabarani recorded it and said: Hushsh means bustan (that is, a garden). Its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

We lifted him, and a large dark mass of people came upon us from behind; we became afraid of them, so much so that we almost scattered and left Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). Fulfulah al-Ju'fi states: I heard Sayyiduna Imam al-Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) say: "I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in a dream, clinging to the Throne, and I saw Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) holding the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) by the waist; I saw Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) holding Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) by the waist; I saw Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) holding Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) by the waist; and then I saw blood pouring down from the sky to the earth." When Imam al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him)
narrated this, some Shi'ah were present with him at that time. They said: "Did you not see Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him)?" Sayyiduna Imam al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "There is nothing I would have loved more than to see Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) holding the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) by the waist, but the dream is what I have described." Then Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You narrate from Sayyiduna Imam al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) a dream that he saw. We were taking part in a military expedition with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the people were struck by severe hardship, until I saw distress on the faces of the Muslims and joy on the faces of the hypocrites. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) observed this situation, he said: 'By Allah! Before the sun sets, Allah Almighty will grant you provision.' Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) knew that the Messenger of Allah speaks the truth, so Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) bought fourteen riding camels together with the food on them, and sent nine of them to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw them, he said: 'Where has this come from?' The people told him: 'Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) has sent these to you as a gift.' The narrator says: Then signs of joy appeared on the faces of the Muslims and signs of distress appeared on the faces of the hypocrites. I looked towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and saw that he had raised both his hands so high that the whiteness of his armpits could be seen; he was supplicating for Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) in a way I had never heard him supplicate for anyone before: 'O Allah! Give to Uthman; O Allah! Do this for Uthman.'"

Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came and stood beside one of the legs of the Throne. Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came and placed his hand on the shoulder of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came and placed his hand on the shoulder of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and he was a little to one side. He said: 'O my Lord! Ask Your servants why they killed me.'" Sayyiduna Imam al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "Then two spouts of blood began to flow from the sky to the earth." The narrator says: It was said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "Have you not noticed what Sayyiduna Imam al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) is narrating?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "He has narrated what he saw."

I asked: 'What is this?' I was told: 'This is the blood of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), concerning which he is petitioning Allah Almighty (to take account).'" Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) called for a copy of the Qur'an and had it placed before him, and when he was martyred, that copy of the Qur'an was in front of him.
