Al-Sha'bi states: Masruq met al-Ashtar, and Masruq said to al-Ashtar: "Did you people martyr Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)?" He said: "Yes." Masruq said: "By Allah! You martyred him while he was one who fasted much and prayed much." The narrator says: Al-Ashtar went away and told Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) about this, and Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Masruq and said: "By Allah! He had Ammar flogged, he had Abu Dharr expelled, he reserved the pasture for himself, and you say that we martyred him while he was one who fasted and prayed voluntary prayers?" Masruq said to him: "By Allah! You did neither of two things: either you should have punished him in the same way that you were punished by him, or you should have been patient - and being patient is better for those who are patient." The narrator says: It was as though he had silenced him completely. The narrator says: Al-Sha'bi used to say: "No woman of Hamdan ever gave birth to a child like Masruq."
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, al-Hasan bin Abi Ja'far al-Jafri, who is da'if (weak) on account of his heedlessness.
