Abdullah bin Sa'id narrates the following statement from his father: We were sitting with Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him). On his right was Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) and on his left was Muhammad bin Abi Bakr. Meanwhile a man named Ghurab bin so-and-so al-Suda'i came and said: "O Commander of the Believers! What do you say about Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)?" The two men spoke before Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Are you asking about a man who disbelieved in Allah after having believed, and became a hypocrite?" The man said to the two of them: "I did not ask you two, nor did I come to you two." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the man: "I do not say what these two are saying." The two of them said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "Then why did we kill him?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "He became your ruler, and in the last days of his rule he did not do some things well; you protested against it, and you did so in the wrong way. By Allah! I hope that Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) and I will be as Allah Almighty has said: 'And We shall remove whatever rancour is in their breasts; brothers, on couches facing one another.'"
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Abdul Mun'im bin Bashir, whom it is not permissible to use as evidence.
