The affairs of Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) and his death

Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 14541

Abu Abdullah al-Jasri states: I came to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and Sayyidah Hafsah bint Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) was also present with her. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to me: "This is Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) turned to Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: "I ask you by Allah: if I say something false, tell me so, and if I speak the truth, tell me so as well." Then Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to her: "Do you know that you and I were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fainted? I asked you: 'Do you think the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has passed away?' You said: 'I do not know.' Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regained consciousness, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Open the door for him.' Then he fainted again, and I asked you: 'Do you think the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has passed away?' You said: 'I do not know.' Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regained consciousness, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Open the door for him.' I said to you: 'Does the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mean my father or your father?' You said: 'I do not know.' We opened the door, and there was Sayyiduna Uthman al-Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him, he said: 'Come close.' He bent over the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said something to him in a whisper; neither I nor you know what it was. Then he raised his head, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: 'Have you understood what I said to you?' He replied: 'Yes.' Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Come close.' So Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) bent over the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) a second time in the same way, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again said something in a whisper, which we could not find out. Then he raised his head, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Have you understood what I said to you?' He replied: 'Yes.' Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Come close.' So he bent over the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) even more, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again said something in a whisper. Then he raised his head, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Have you understood what I said to you?' He replied: 'Yes, my ears have heard it and my heart has preserved it.' Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: 'Go.'" Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) replied: "Allah knows, it is so" (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are) she said: "O Allah! She has spoken the truth." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: The hadith narrated by Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was recorded by Ibn Majah, without this context. Ahmad recorded all of these narrations. Al-Tabarani recorded something similar in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and narrated these additional words: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Uthman, Allah Almighty will soon clothe you with a shirt; when the hypocrites seek to make you take it off, do not take it off." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this three times. Sayyiduna al-Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): "O Mother of the Believers! Where were you with regard to this hadith?" She said: "By the Lord of the Ka'bah! I had forgotten it, until that man was killed."
