Al-Zubayr bin Bakkar narrates: Sayyiduna Uthman al-Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred on a Friday, the eighteenth of Dhu al-Hijjah, in the year 36 AH, after Asr. At that time he was eighty-two years old, and on that day he was fasting.

Abu Qilabah narrates: A man from Quraysh named Thumamah was the governor of San'a. When the news of the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) reached him, he wept bitterly while delivering a sermon. When he had composed himself somewhat, he said: Today the caliphate upon the method of prophethood has been taken away from the Ummah of Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Now there will be kingship and tyranny; whoever seizes something will overpower it.

Imam al-Tabarani narrates: Abu Khalifah recited these verses to me; he said: Abu Muhammad al-Tawzi recited these verses to us. Abu Khalifah says: I asked al-Riyashi about them, and he said: These verses are by Sayyiduna Hassan bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him). (He says:) "You abandoned fighting at the frontiers, and came to fight some people beside the grave of Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Evil is the path you have been set upon, and evil is this deed of a devoted worshipper."

Abu Khalifah recited these verses to us; he said: Al-Abbas bin al-Fadl al-Riyashi recited to us these verses of Layla al-Akhyaliyyah: "Does the Ummah hope for good after Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), when he was the most excellent of those who walk on a shank (that is, of human beings)? The Caliph of Allah gave them gifts and wealth, of gold and silver. So do not deny the promise of Allah Almighty, and keep fearing Him; do not be fearful about anything, and do not say about anything: I will soon do it, for whatever a man encounters, Allah Almighty has already decreed it."
