Al-Hasan states: One of the guards of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) told me that a man from the Ansar came to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: "O my nephew! Go back; you are not my killer." The man said: "How did you come to know this?" Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "On the seventh day after your birth you were brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed tahnik for you and supplicated for blessing for you." The narrator says: Then another man from the Ansar came to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: "O my nephew! Go back; you will not kill me." He asked: "How did you come to know this?" Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Because on the seventh day after your birth you were brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed tahnik for you and supplicated for blessing for you." Then Muhammad bin Abi Bakr came in, and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You will kill me." He said: "How do you know, you worthless one?" Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Because on the seventh day after your birth you were brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) so that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) might perform tahnik for you and supplicate for blessing for you, and you soiled the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with excrement." The narrator says: Then he climbed onto Sayyiduna Uthman's (may Allah be pleased with him) chest and seized Sayyiduna Uthman's (may Allah be pleased with him) beard in his fist. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You are about to do this, but remember that it would have grieved your father." Then he plunged the small arrowhead that was in his hand into the throat of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him).
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain mentions a guard of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) whose name is not given; the rest of its narrators have been declared trustworthy.
