Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by some Jews who were fasting on the day of Ashura. He asked: "What is this fast for?" They said: "This is the day on which Allah Almighty saved Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) and the Children of Israel from drowning and drowned Pharaoh, and this is the day on which the ark (of Sayyiduna Nuh (peace be upon him)) came to rest on Mount Judi, so Sayyiduna Nuh (peace be upon him) and Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) fasted (on this day) to give thanks to Allah Almighty." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We are closer to Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) and more entitled to fast." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered his Companions to fast (on that day).

Whoever fasts one day of Rajab, it is as if he fasted for a year. Whoever fasts seven days of it, all seven gates of Hell are closed to him. Whoever fasts eight days of it, all eight gates of Paradise are opened for him. Whoever fasts ten days of it, Allah Almighty will grant him whatever he asks of Him. Whoever fasts fifteen days of it, a caller announces in the heaven: 'Your past sins have been forgiven, so now begin your deeds anew.' Whoever does more, Allah Almighty grants him more reward. In the month of Rajab, Allah Almighty made Sayyiduna Nuh (peace be upon him) board the ark. He fasted in Rajab and commanded his companions to fast as well. Their ark sailed on for seven months, and then on the day of Ashura it came to rest on Mount Judi.
