Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 5127

Ma'bad al-Qurashi narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was at Qudayd when a man came to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "Have you eaten anything today?" (The narrator says:) This was on the day of Ashura. The man replied: "No, I have only drunk water." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then do not eat anything until the sun sets, and instruct those behind you to fast today as well."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
