Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The day of Ashura does not mean the day that people speak of. It was a day on which the Ka'bah was covered, and on which the Abyssinians performed their displays in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and that day used to move around through the year. Earlier, people used to go to a certain Jew and ask him (that is, beg from him). When that Jew died, they came to Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him (or begged something from him).
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and I do not understand what its meaning is. Its chain contains a narrator, Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad; a great deal has been said about him, though he has been declared trustworthy.
