Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 5109

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a message to the people of a village located four farsakhs away (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) two farsakhs away. This was on the day of Ashura. He commanded that whoever had eaten something should not eat anything for the rest of the day, and whoever had not eaten anything should complete the fast for the rest of the day.
Ahmad and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Jabir al-Ju'fi, whom Shu'bah and al-Thawri declared thiqah (trustworthy), and a great deal has been said about him.
