وَعَنْ جَابِرٍ أَنَّهُ قَالَ : أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِيَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ أَنْ نَصُومَهُ وَقَالَ : " هُوَ يَوْمٌ كَانَتِ الْيَهُودُ تَصُومُهُ " .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ وَالطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْأَوْسَطِ ، وَفِيهِ ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ ، وَهُوَ حَسَنُ الْحَدِيثِ ، وَفِيهِ كَلَامٌ .

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us regarding the day of Ashura that we should fast on it, and he said: "It is a day on which the Jews used to fast."
Ahmad and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Ibn Lahi'ah, who is hasan al-hadith (good in hadith), and he has been criticised.
