Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 5121

Sayyiduna Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that on the day of Ashura the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people, whoever of you has eaten something should not eat anything for the rest of the day, and whoever of you wishes to fast should fast."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a narrator, Ayyub bin Jabir, whom Ahmad and others declared thiqah (trustworthy), while Yahya bin Ma'in and others called him da'if (weak).
