Hadith Beginning with the Letter Alif (أ)

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, killing (that is, attaining martyrdom in the cause of Allah) is sufficient for you."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, after me there will be people in my Ummah who will recite the Qur'an, but it will not go beyond their throats. They will pass out of the religion just as an arrow passes through the game, and then they will never return to it. They are the worst of all creation."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, Bilal gives the adhan at night (for tahajjud), so keep eating and drinking until Ibn Umm Maktum gives the adhan."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, Bilal gives the adhan at night in order to wake those of you who are asleep and to send back those of you who are standing in prayer (tahajjud) (for the pre-dawn meal)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, the Children of Israel split into seventy-one (71) sects, and indeed my Ummah will soon split into seventy-two (72) sects. All of them will be in the Fire except one, and that is al-Jama'ah (that is, the group that holds firm to the Sunnah)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, (such was the state of) the Children of Israel that when urine got on (the clothes or body of) any one of them, he would cut that part off with scissors. So when any one of you intends to urinate, let him look for a (soft) place for his urine."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, the Children of Israel wrote a book (of their own), then began to follow it and abandoned the Torah."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, when the Children of Israel fell into ruin, they had begun (abandoning knowledge and action and merely) telling stories."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, Banu Hisham bin al-Mughirah have asked my permission to marry their daughter to Ali bin Abi Talib, but I will never permit it, I will never permit it, I will never permit it, unless Ibn Abi Talib wishes to divorce my daughter and marry their daughter. For she (Fatimah) is a part of me; whatever displeases her displeases me, and whatever hurts her hurts me."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, before the Hour there will be al-Harj, that is, widespread killing. It will not be the killing of the disbelievers, but rather the Ummah killing one another, to the extent that a man will meet his brother and kill him. The minds of the people of that time will be taken away, and in their place will remain foolish and worthless people, most of whom will think that they are on a right path, whereas they will not be on anything true."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, before the Hour there will be thirty great liars (dajjals)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, before the Hour there will be trials (fitan) like pieces of the dark night. In them a man will be a believer in the morning and a disbeliever by evening, and a believer in the evening and a disbeliever by morning. In these trials the one sitting will be better than the one standing, the one standing will be better than the one walking, and the one walking will be better than the one running. So (in the time of these trials) break your bows, cut their strings and strike your swords against stones (to blunt them). Then if an attacker enters the house of any one of you, let him be like the better of the two sons of Adam (Habil) (that is, let him be killed rather than kill)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, before the Hour many great liars (extreme liars) will appear, so beware of them."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, before the Hour there will be days in which ignorance will descend, knowledge will be taken away, and al-harj will become widespread in them; and al-harj means killing and bloodshed."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"There were three men among the Children of Israel: one a leper, the second bald and the third blind. Allah Almighty willed to test them, so He sent an angel to them. The angel came to the leper and asked: 'What thing do you love most?' He said: 'A good colour and good skin, for people are repulsed by me.' The angel passed his hand over him, and his illness went away, and he was given a beautiful colour and good skin. The angel asked: 'What wealth do you love most?' He said: 'Camels.' So he was given a she-camel ten months pregnant, and the angel said: 'May Allah Almighty bless you in it.' Then the angel came to the bald man and asked: 'What thing do you love most?' He said: 'Beautiful hair, and that this defect of mine be removed, for people are repelled by me.' The angel passed his hand over him, his baldness went away, and he was given beautiful hair. The angel asked: 'What wealth do you love most?' He said: 'Cows.' So he was given a pregnant cow, and the angel said: 'May Allah Almighty bless you in it.' Then the angel came to the blind man and asked: 'What thing do you love most?' He said: 'That Allah Almighty restore my sight to me so that I may see people.' The angel passed his hand over him, and Allah Almighty restored his sight. The angel asked: 'What wealth do you love most?' He said: 'Goats.' So he was given a goat that bore young. Then these two (the she-camel and the cow) produced offspring, and this one (the goat) also gave birth, until one of them had a valley full of camels, the second a valley full of cows and the third a valley full of goats. Then the angel came to the leper in that same form and appearance (of a leper) and said: 'I am a poor man; all my means have been cut off during my journey, and today there is no way for me to reach my destination except with the help of Allah and then with your support. I ask you, by the One who gave you a good colour, beautiful skin and wealth, for a camel so that I may complete my journey.' He replied: 'I have many other obligations.' The angel said to him: 'It is as though I recognise you. Were you not a leper whom people found repulsive? You were poor, and then Allah gave you wealth?' He said: 'This wealth I inherited from my forefathers.' The angel said: 'If you are lying, may Allah return you to the state you were in before.' Then the angel came to the bald man in that same form and appearance (of a bald man) and said to him the same as he had said to the leper, and he too gave the same reply the leper had given. The angel said: 'If you are lying, may Allah return you to the state you were in before.' Then the angel came to the blind man in that same form and appearance (of a blind man) and said: 'I am a poor man and a traveller; all my means have been cut off on my journey, and today there is no way for me to reach my destination except with the help of Allah and then with your support. I ask you, by the One who restored your sight, for a goat so that I may complete my journey.' The blind man said: 'I was indeed blind and Allah restored my sight, and I was poor and He made me rich. Take whatever you wish. By Allah! Whatever you take today for the sake of Allah, I will never hold you back.' The angel said: 'Keep your wealth. You were only being tested. Indeed, Allah is pleased with you and is displeased with your two companions.'"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, Jibril came to me at the time you saw. He called me and hid it from you, and I answered him and hid it from you. He could not come in to you because you had taken off your clothes, and I thought you had fallen asleep, so I did not like to wake you, and I also feared that you would feel lonely (at my leaving). Then he (Jibril) said: 'Indeed, your Lord commands you to go to the people of al-Baqi' and seek forgiveness for them.'"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, Jibril used to review the Qur'an with me once every year, but this year he has reviewed it with me twice, and I can only think that my appointed time (of passing) has come near. And indeed, you will be the first of my household to join me, so fear Allah and be patient, for what an excellent forerunner I am for you."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, when Jibril dug Zamzam with his heel, the mother of Isma'il (Hajar) began gathering the earth and sand to contain it. May Allah have mercy on Hajar! Had she left it as it was (without containing it), the spring of Zamzam would have become a flowing spring."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, honouring old ties and keeping faith with them is part of faith."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, it is an established way of Allah Almighty that whatever thing of this world He raises high, He eventually brings it low."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, my Pond (in its breadth) is longer than the distance from Aylah to Aden. It is whiter than snow and sweeter than honey in milk, and its vessels are more numerous than the stars of the sky. And indeed, I will drive people away from it just as a man drives other people's camels away from his own trough." The Companions said: "Will you recognise us on that day?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes! You will have a mark that no other nation will have: you will come to me with radiant white foreheads, hands and feet from the traces of ablution."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, my Pond is wider than the distance from Aylah to Aden. By the One in whose hand is my soul! Its vessels are more numerous than the stars of the sky, it is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey. By the One in whose hand is my soul! I will drive (others) away from it just as a man drives stray camels away from his trough." The Companions said: "O Messenger of Allah! Will you recognise us?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes! You will come to me at the Pond with radiant white foreheads, hands and feet from the traces of ablution, and this distinction will belong to no one besides you."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, my Pond extends from Aden to Amman of al-Balqa'. Its water is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey, and its drinking cups are as many as the stars. Whoever drinks a single draught from it will never feel thirst after it. The first people to come to it will be the poor among the Muhajirun: those with dishevelled hair and soiled clothes, whom well-off, wealthy women do not marry and for whom the great doors are not opened; those who fulfil the obligations owed by them but are not given what is owed to them."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Your menstruation is not in your hand (that is, in this state the hands do not become impure for cooking or taking part in other matters).

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, the best of Allah's servants are those who fulfil their promises and are pure."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, the best of you are those who are best in repaying (that is, who settle debts or dues handsomely)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, the best of the Tabi'in is a man who will be called Uways. He has a mother to whom he is very dutiful. If he were to swear an oath by Allah, Allah would surely fulfil it. He has a mark of whiteness (leprosy) on his body. So tell him to seek forgiveness for you."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, the best perfume for men is that whose fragrance is apparent and whose colour is hidden, and the best perfume for women is that whose colour is apparent and whose fragrance is hidden."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, the best of the days on which you have cupping done are the 17th, 19th and 21st of the month."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"The Prophet of Allah Dawud (peace be upon him) used to eat only from the earnings (labour) of his own hands."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, your blood and your wealth are sacred to one another, just like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this city of yours. Beware! Every matter of the Jahiliyyah has been trampled beneath my feet, and all the blood-claims of the Jahiliyyah have been remitted, and the first blood-claim I remit is that of our own family, the blood of Rabi'ah bin al-Harith bin Abd al-Muttalib. And the usury (riba) of the Jahiliyyah has been abolished, and the first usury I abolish is that of our own family, the usury of al-Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib; it is all remitted. So fear Allah concerning women! For you have taken them with the trust of Allah and made their private parts lawful by the word of Allah. And your right over them is that they do not allow anyone whom you dislike onto your beds; if they do so, then strike them, but in a way that is not severe or harmful. And their right over you is that you provide them with food and clothing according to what is customary. And I have left among you something which, if you hold fast to it, you will never go astray: the Book of Allah (the Qur'an). And you will be asked about me, so what will you say?" The Companions said: "We bear witness that you have conveyed (the religion), fulfilled (the trust) and given sincere counsel." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, bear witness."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, your Lord marvels at His servant when he says: 'My Lord, forgive me my sins,' while he knows that none forgives sins except Me."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, your Lord is Modest and Generous. He is too modest, when a servant raises his hands to Him, to return them empty (disappointed)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, my Lord sent word to me: 'Recite the Qur'an in one harf (mode).' I replied to Him: 'Make it easy for my Ummah!' Then Allah sent word to me again: 'Recite it in two ahruf.' I replied again: 'Make it easy for my Ummah!' Then Allah sent word to me (a third time): 'Recite it in seven ahruf, and for each reply you have a request (a promise of acceptance) which you may ask of Me.' I said: 'O Allah, forgive my Ummah! O Allah, forgive my Ummah!' And I have kept back the third for a day on which all of creation, even Ibrahim (peace be upon him), will turn to me."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, there are some men among the Arabs, one of whom gives me a gift, and I recompense him for it according to what I have, then he is displeased with it and keeps being angry with me over it. By Allah! After this stand of mine, I will not accept a gift from any man among the Arabs except from a man of Quraysh, of the Ansar, of Thaqif or of Daws."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, some men deal with the wealth of Allah without right (use it unjustly); for them is the Fire on the Day of Resurrection."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, death came to a man, and when he despaired of life he instructed his family: 'When I die, gather a great deal of firewood for me, then light a fire in it, until, when it has eaten my flesh, reached my bones and burnt them, take them and grind them, then watch for a windy day and scatter them into the sea.' They did as he had commanded them. Then Allah gathered his particles and asked him: 'Why did you do that?' He said: 'Out of fear of You!' So Allah forgave him."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, a man said: 'By Allah! Allah will never forgive so-and-so.' So Allah Almighty said: 'Who is it that swears by Me that I will not forgive so-and-so?! I have indeed forgiven so-and-so and have nullified your (acts of worship) deeds.'"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, a man killed ninety-nine people, then the thought of repentance came to him, so he asked about the most knowledgeable person on earth, and he was directed to a monk. He came to him and said that he had killed ninety-nine people; was there any repentance for him? He said: 'No!' So he killed him as well, completing a hundred. Then he asked about the most knowledgeable person on earth, and he was directed to a scholar. He said that he had killed a hundred people; was there any repentance for him? He said: 'Yes! And who can come between him and repentance? Go to such-and-such a land, for there are people there who worship Allah; worship Allah with them and do not return to your land, for it is an evil land.' So he set off, until, when he had reached halfway, death came to him. The angels of mercy and the angels of punishment disputed over him. The angels of mercy said: 'He came repenting, turning with his heart towards Allah Almighty.' And the angels of punishment said: 'He never did any good.' Then an angel came to them in human form, and they made him judge between them. He said: 'Measure between the two lands; whichever of them he is closer to, he belongs to it.' They measured and found him closer to the land he had intended, so the angels of mercy took his soul."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Indeed, there was a man before you to whom Allah had given abundant wealth. When his death approached, he said to his sons: 'What kind of father have I been to you?' They said: 'You were the best of fathers.' He said: 'I have never done any good deed, so when I die, burn me, then crush me, then scatter me on a stormy day.' They did so. Then Allah gathered him and asked: 'What drove you to this?' He said: 'Fear of You!' So Allah received him with His mercy."
