"إن ثلاثة نفر في بني إسرائيل: أبرص وأقرع وأعمى بدا لله أن يبتليهم فبعث إليهم ملكا فأتى الأبرص فقال: أي شيء أحب إليك؟ قال: لون حسن وجلد حسن قد قذرني الناس فمسحه فذهب وأعطي لونا حسنا وجلدا حسنا فقال: أي المال أحب إليك؟ قال: الإبل فأعطي ناقة عشراء فقال: يبارك لك فيها; وأتى الأقرع فقال: أي شيء أحب إليك؟ قال: شعر حسن ويذهب هذا عني قد قذرني الناس فمسحه فذهب وأعطي شعرا حسنا قال: فأي المال أحب إليك؟ قال: البقر فأعطاه بقرة حاملا وقال: يبارك لك فيها; وأتى الأعمى فقال: أي شيء أحب إليك؟ قال: يرد الله إلي بصري فأبصر به الناس فمسحه فرد الله إليه بصره قال: فأي المال أحب إليك؟ قال: الغنم فأعطاه شاة والدا فأنتج هذان وولد هذا فكان لهذا واد من إبل ولهذا واد من بقر ولهذا واد من غنم; ثم إنه أتى الأبرص في صورته وهيئته فقال: رجل مسكين تقطعت به الحبال في سفره فلا بلاغ اليوم إلا بالله ثم بك أسألك بالذي أعطاك ¤ اللون الحسن والجلد الحسن والمال بعيرا أتبلغ عليه في سفري فقال له: إن الحقوق كثيرة فقال له: كأني أعرفك ألم تكن أبرص يقذرك الناس فقيرا فأعطاك الله؟ فقال: لقد ورثت لكابر عن كابر فقال: إن كنت كاذبا فصيرك الله إلى ما كنت; وأتى الأقرع في صورته وهيئته فقال له مثل ما قال لهذا ورد عليه مثل ما رد عليه هذا قال إن كنت كاذبا فصيرك الله إلى ما كنت; وأتى الأعمى في صورته وهيئته فقال: رجل مسكين وابن سبيل وتقطعت بي الحبال في سفري فلا بلاغ اليوم إلا بالله ثم بك أسألك بالذي رد عليك بصرك شاة أتبلغ بها في سفري؟ فقال: قد كنت أعمى فرد الله بصري وفقيرا فخذ ما شئت فوالله لا أحمدك اليوم لشيء أخذته لله فقال: أمسك مالك فإنما ابتليتم فقد رضي الله عنك وسخط على صاحبيك"
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"There were three men among the Children of Israel: one a leper, the second bald and the third blind. Allah Almighty willed to test them, so He sent an angel to them. The angel came to the leper and asked: 'What thing do you love most?' He said: 'A good colour and good skin, for people are repulsed by me.' The angel passed his hand over him, and his illness went away, and he was given a beautiful colour and good skin. The angel asked: 'What wealth do you love most?' He said: 'Camels.' So he was given a she-camel ten months pregnant, and the angel said: 'May Allah Almighty bless you in it.' Then the angel came to the bald man and asked: 'What thing do you love most?' He said: 'Beautiful hair, and that this defect of mine be removed, for people are repelled by me.' The angel passed his hand over him, his baldness went away, and he was given beautiful hair. The angel asked: 'What wealth do you love most?' He said: 'Cows.' So he was given a pregnant cow, and the angel said: 'May Allah Almighty bless you in it.' Then the angel came to the blind man and asked: 'What thing do you love most?' He said: 'That Allah Almighty restore my sight to me so that I may see people.' The angel passed his hand over him, and Allah Almighty restored his sight. The angel asked: 'What wealth do you love most?' He said: 'Goats.' So he was given a goat that bore young. Then these two (the she-camel and the cow) produced offspring, and this one (the goat) also gave birth, until one of them had a valley full of camels, the second a valley full of cows and the third a valley full of goats. Then the angel came to the leper in that same form and appearance (of a leper) and said: 'I am a poor man; all my means have been cut off during my journey, and today there is no way for me to reach my destination except with the help of Allah and then with your support. I ask you, by the One who gave you a good colour, beautiful skin and wealth, for a camel so that I may complete my journey.' He replied: 'I have many other obligations.' The angel said to him: 'It is as though I recognise you. Were you not a leper whom people found repulsive? You were poor, and then Allah gave you wealth?' He said: 'This wealth I inherited from my forefathers.' The angel said: 'If you are lying, may Allah return you to the state you were in before.' Then the angel came to the bald man in that same form and appearance (of a bald man) and said to him the same as he had said to the leper, and he too gave the same reply the leper had given. The angel said: 'If you are lying, may Allah return you to the state you were in before.' Then the angel came to the blind man in that same form and appearance (of a blind man) and said: 'I am a poor man and a traveller; all my means have been cut off on my journey, and today there is no way for me to reach my destination except with the help of Allah and then with your support. I ask you, by the One who restored your sight, for a goat so that I may complete my journey.' The blind man said: 'I was indeed blind and Allah restored my sight, and I was poor and He made me rich. Take whatever you wish. By Allah! Whatever you take today for the sake of Allah, I will never hold you back.' The angel said: 'Keep your wealth. You were only being tested. Indeed, Allah is pleased with you and is displeased with your two companions.'"
