Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: In the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) there was a man who took part in a campaign with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When they returned, that man got down from his mount, went to the Prophet's Mosque and began to pray in it. He prolonged his prayer, until the Companions began to think that this man had superiority over everyone. One day the man passed by while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting among his Companions. One of his Companions said to him: "O Messenger of Allah, this is that man." Then either the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for him, or the man came that way of his own accord. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him coming, he said: "By the One in whose hand is my soul, between his eyes there is a mark (or stamp) of Satan." When the man came and stopped by the gathering, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "When you came and stopped by this gathering, did you think to yourself that there is no one among these people better than you?" He replied: "Yes." Then the man went away. He came to a corner of the mosque, drew a line with his foot, set his heels in line, and stood up to pray. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Which of you will get up, go to him and kill him?" Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up. (When he returned,) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Did you kill the man?" He said: "I found him praying, so I was in awe of him." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Which of you will get up, go to him and kill him?" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will." He took the sword, found the man praying, and he too came back. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): "Did you kill the man?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah, I found him praying, so I was in awe of him." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Which of you will get up, go to this man and kill him?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You will do it, if you find him." When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) went, he did not find the man. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Did you kill the man?" He said: "I do not know where in the land he went." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is the first faction to emerge in my Ummah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: "Had you killed him (the narrator is unsure of one word here), not even two people of my Ummah would have differed. The Children of Israel split into seventy-one sects, and this Ummah (that is, the Ummah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) will soon split into seventy-two sects; all of them will be in Hell except one group." We said: "O Prophet of Allah, which is that one group?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Al-Jama'ah (the main body)." Yazid al-Raqashi says: I asked Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): "O Abu Hamzah, where is al-Jama'ah?" He said: "With your rulers, with your rulers."
Abu Ya'la recorded it. The narrator Yazid al-Raqashi has been declared da'if (weak) by the majority, and there is a mild declaration of reliability for him. The rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih. An authentic narration from Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) has already passed before this.

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: In the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) there was a man whose devotion and effort in worship impressed us. We mentioned him by name to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not recognise him. We described his features, but he did not recognise him. While we were speaking about him, the man appeared before us. We said: "This is he." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have told me about a man on whose face there is a mark (or stamp) of Satan." The man came and stopped by them, and he did not give the greeting of peace. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "I adjure you by Allah: when you came and stopped by this gathering, did you think to yourself that there is no one among these people more virtuous than you?" He replied: "By Allah, yes." Then the man went in and began to pray. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who will kill this man?" Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) went to him and found him standing in prayer. He thought: "Subhan Allah (Glory be to Allah)! Shall I kill a man who is praying, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has forbidden killing those who pray?" He came out. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What did you do?" He said: "I disliked killing him because he was praying, and you have forbidden killing those who pray." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will do it." He went in and found the man with his forehead placed on the ground (that is, in prostration). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) thought: "Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) is more virtuous than me (if he did not kill him, neither will I)." Then he came out. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What happened?" He said: "I found that he had placed his forehead (on the ground), so I disliked killing him." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who will kill him?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You will do it, if you reach him." The narrator says: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) went in and found that the man had already left. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) returned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What happened?" He said: "I did not find him." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Had this man been killed, not even two men of my Ummah would have differed; he would have been the first of them and the last." The narrator Musa says: I heard Muhammad bin Ka'b say: He is the one whom Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) killed, Dhu al-Thudayyah.
Abu Ya'la recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Musa bin Ubaydah, who is matruk (abandoned).
Al-Bazzar recorded it in abridged form, and its narrators have been declared reliable despite weakness in some of them. This narration also has another route, longer than this one, which will come in the chapter on trials (fitan).

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The people said something about him and praised him, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who will kill him?" Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will." He went and found that the man had drawn a line around himself and was praying there. When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) saw him in that state, he came back and did not kill him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who will kill him?" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will." He went and saw that, within that line, the man was praying, so he came back and did not kill him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who will take care of him" (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) "Who will kill him?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You would do it, but I do not think that you will reach him." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) went and saw that the man had already gone.
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Some dinars were brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He began taking them handful by handful and looking at them, then he looked to his right as though he were consulting someone about whom to give. Here the narrator Affan reported these words in his narration: that he was consulting about someone, as to which person he should give. Meanwhile, a black man whose head was shaved, wearing two white garments, with the mark of prostration between his eyes, said: "You have not been just in the distribution." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry and said: "Who will be just with you after me?" The people said: "O Messenger of Allah, shall we not kill him?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his Companions: "This man and his companions will pass out of the religion just as an arrow passes through the target, and they will have no connection with Islam."
Ahmad recorded it; al-Bazzar recorded it in abridged form, and al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains the narrator Ata' bin al-Sa'ib, whose memory became confused (ikhtilat).

Miqsam, the freed slave of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Harith bin Nawfal (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates: Talid bin Kilab al-Laythi and I set out and came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was circumambulating the House (the Ka'bah), holding his sandals in his hand. We said to him: "Were you present with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when, on the day of Hunayn (during the distribution of the spoils), the man from Tamim spoke to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He replied: "Yes. A man from Banu Tamim came, whose name was Dhu al-Khuwaysirah. He stopped by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was making payments to the people. He said: 'O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), I have been watching what you have been doing since the morning.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Very well, and what have you seen?' He said: 'My opinion about you is that you have not acted justly.'" The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry, then said: "Woe to you! If justice is not with me, then with whom will it be?" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, shall we not kill him?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave him, for he will have some followers who will go to extremes in the religion until they pass out of the religion just as an arrow passes through the target. A man examines its arrowhead and sees nothing on it; then he examines its shaft and nothing is found; then he looks at the notch where the bowstring meets the arrow and nothing is found on it, even though it has passed through the dung and the blood."
Ahmad recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded it in abridged form. The narrators of Ahmad are thiqat (trustworthy).

Shahr bin Hawshab narrates: When the pledge of allegiance to Yazid bin Mu'awiyah reached us, I came to Syria. I was told of the place where Nawf used to stand (and preach), so I came to him. Meanwhile, a man came to him and the people hurried (toward him); the man was wearing a sheet, and it was Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him). When Nawf saw him, he stopped narrating. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Soon some people from my Ummah will emerge from the direction of the east. They will recite the Qur'an, but it will not go beyond their throats. Whenever a group of them emerges, it will be killed; when another group emerges, it will be killed." He went on until he counted it more than ten times: whenever a group of them emerges, it will be killed, until the Dajjal emerges among those of them who remain.
Ahmad recorded it within a long hadith. The narrator Shahr bin Hawshab is thiqah (trustworthy); some criticism has been made of him that is not harmful. The remaining narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.

I went for Hajj and met Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him). I said to him: "You are one of those who remain from the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Allah Almighty has blessed you with knowledge. Some people criticize their rulers and testify that they are astray." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Upon those people be the curse of Allah Almighty, the angels and all mankind. A container of gold or silver was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he began distributing it among his Companions. A Bedouin man stood up and said: 'O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), Allah Almighty has commanded you to be just, and still you are not being just.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Woe to you! Who will be just with you after me?' When the man went away, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'There will be people like this in my Ummah. They will recite the Qur'an, but it will not go beyond their throats. If they rebel, then kill them; then if they rebel again, kill them.'" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this three times.
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sharik bin Shihab narrates: I wished to meet one of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who would narrate to me a hadith about the Khawarij. Once, on the day of Arafah, I met Sayyiduna Abu Barzah al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him), who was with some of his companions. I said: "O Sayyiduna Abu Barzah (may Allah be pleased with him), narrate to me a hadith that you heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say about the Khawarij." He replied: "I will narrate to you what my ears heard and my eyes saw. Some dinars were brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and he began to distribute them. With him was a black man whose hair was shaved, wearing two white garments, with the mark of prostration between his eyes. He presented himself before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): he came to him from the front, and he gave him nothing; then he came to him from the right, and he gave him nothing; then he came to him from behind, and he gave him nothing. He said: 'O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), by Allah, today you have not been just in the distribution.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became extremely angry, then said: 'By Allah, after me you will not find anyone more just towards you than me.' He said these words three times. After that he said: 'Some men will emerge from the direction of the east (this man seems to be one of them); their outward appearance will be like his. They will recite the Qur'an, but it will not go beyond their throats. They will pass out of the religion just as an arrow passes through the target, and then they will not return to the religion.' Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (or the narrating Companion) placed his hand on his chest (and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) 'Their distinctive sign will be shaving the head. They will keep passing out of the religion until the last of them also passes out of it. When you see them, kill them.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this three times. (Then he said:) 'They will be the worst of creation and created beings (that is, of every kind of creature).' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this three times as well." Here the narrator Hammad reported these words: "They will not return to it (the religion)."

When they rebel, kill them; then if they emerge, kill them; then if they emerge, kill them. For glad tidings are for the one who kills them, and glad tidings are also for the one whom they kill. Sayyiduna Amir bin Wathilah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the occasion of the Battle of Hunayn, a man whose head was shaved came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: "You have not acted justly." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If I do not act justly, then who will act justly?" The narrator says: The attention of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was diverted from that man, and the man went away. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Where is that man?" The people searched for him but could not reach him. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Soon some people will emerge in my Ummah whose distinctive sign will be like his (that is, they will shave their heads). They will pass out of the religion just as an arrow passes through the target. If a man examines the shaft of the arrow, he sees nothing; if he looks at its feathers, he sees nothing; if he looks at its notch, he sees nothing."

Hasan bin Abi al-Hasan al-Basri narrates: Al-Suraym met Abdullah bin Khabbab at Bidar, which is a village of Basrah. He was at that time heading to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) in Kufah, and with him were his wife, his children and his slave-girl. He (al-Suraym) said: "This is a man from among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah; we should ask him about our condition, our affair and our setting out." The people said: "Very well." So they went to him and said: "Will you not tell us whether you heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say anything about us?" He said: "As for you specifically, I did not hear that; but I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'After me there will come people who will recite the Qur'an, but it will not go beyond their throats. They will pass out of the religion, and then they will not come back into it until the arrow returns to the place from which it left. Glad tidings for the one who kills them, and glad tidings also for the one whom they kill. They (that is, the Khawarij) will be the worst of the slain beneath the sky and upon the earth, and they will be the dogs of Hell.'"
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains the narrator Muhammad bin Umar al-Kala'i, who is da'if (weak). A hadith narrated from this Companion will come later in the chapter on tribulations.

It is reported about Muslim bin Abi Bakrah that a man asked him: "Have you heard anything about the Khawarij?" He said: I heard my father, Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him), state this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) "Beware! Soon some people will emerge from my Ummah who will be harsh and sharp; their tongues will be eloquent (or sharp) with the Qur'an, but the Qur'an will not go beyond their throats. Beware! When you see them, strike them down; when you see them, strike them down, for the one who kills them will be rewarded."

Safwan bin Muhriz reports from Sayyiduna Jundub bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he passed by some people who were reciting the Qur'an, and he said: "Do not let these people deceive you. Today they are reciting the Qur'an, and tomorrow they will face one another with swords." Then he said: "Bring me some reciters of the Qur'an, and let them be elderly people." The narrator says: So I brought Nafi' bin al-Azraq to him, and I brought Mirdas bin Bilal to him, and some other people along with the two of them, six or eight persons. When we came into the presence of Sayyiduna Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The likeness of the one who teaches people goodness and forgets himself is that of a lamp which gives light to people and burns itself. Whoever shows off his deeds, Allah Almighty will expose his showing off. Know that when a person dies, the first part of his body to rot is his belly, so one should let nothing but what is pure enter his belly.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Soon some people will recite the Qur'an, but it will not go beyond their throats. They will drink it just as they drink water, but it will not go beyond their throats." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (or the narrator) placed his hand on his throat and said: "It will not go beyond here."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains the narrator al-Husayn bin Idris, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Some people of my Ummah will surely recite the Qur'an, and they will pass out of Islam just as an arrow passes through the target."
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Hadith Takhrij «
Sa'id bin Jumhan narrates: I came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him), whose eyesight had gone, and I greeted him with salam. He asked: "Who are you?" I replied: "I am Sa'id bin Jumhan." He asked: "How is your father?" I said: "The Azariqah have killed him." He said: "May Allah Almighty curse the Azariqah! May Allah Almighty curse the Azariqah!" Then he said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "They are the dogs of Hell." The narrator says: I asked: "Is it only the Azariqah, or are all the Khawarij like this?" He said: "Rather, all the Khawarij (are the dogs of Hell)." I said: "If the ruler of the time oppresses the people and treats them badly, (will he also be included in this?)" He stretched his hand toward me and gave me a hard nudge, then said: "O Ibn Jumhan, you must hold to the great majority (al-sawad al-a'zam). If the ruler listens to you, go to him in his house and tell him what you know. If he accepts it from you, well and good; otherwise leave him to his state, for you are not more knowledgeable than he is." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Ibn Majah recorded from this narration only the part about the Khawarij being the dogs of Hell.
Al-Tabarani and Ahmad recorded it. The narrators of Ahmad are thiqat (trustworthy). Before this, a hadith recorded by Ahmad has already passed concerning the manner of sincere counsel to rulers, in the chapter on the caliphate; it is narrated through various chains, one of which is hasan (good).

Hadith Takhrij «
Sayyiduna Talq bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once we were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said to us: "Soon some people will come who will recite the Qur'an, but it will not go beyond their throats. They will pass out of the religion just as an arrow passes through the target. Glad tidings for the one who kills them, and glad tidings also for the one whom they kill." The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned toward me and said: "Soon they will emerge from the land of your people, O man of Yamamah, and they will fight between the rivers." I said: "May my father and mother be ransomed for you, there are no rivers there." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Soon there will be."
Al-Tabarani recorded it through Ali bin Yahya bin Isma'il from his father, and I do not know either of them.
