Shahr bin Hawshab narrates: When the pledge of allegiance to Yazid bin Mu'awiyah reached us, I came to Syria. I was told of the place where Nawf used to stand (and preach), so I came to him. Meanwhile, a man came to him and the people hurried (toward him); the man was wearing a sheet, and it was Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him). When Nawf saw him, he stopped narrating. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Soon some people from my Ummah will emerge from the direction of the east. They will recite the Qur'an, but it will not go beyond their throats. Whenever a group of them emerges, it will be killed; when another group emerges, it will be killed." He went on until he counted it more than ten times: whenever a group of them emerges, it will be killed, until the Dajjal emerges among those of them who remain.
Ahmad recorded it within a long hadith. The narrator Shahr bin Hawshab is thiqah (trustworthy); some criticism has been made of him that is not harmful. The remaining narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.
