Miqsam, the freed slave of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Harith bin Nawfal (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates: Talid bin Kilab al-Laythi and I set out and came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was circumambulating the House (the Ka'bah), holding his sandals in his hand. We said to him: "Were you present with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when, on the day of Hunayn (during the distribution of the spoils), the man from Tamim spoke to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He replied: "Yes. A man from Banu Tamim came, whose name was Dhu al-Khuwaysirah. He stopped by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was making payments to the people. He said: 'O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), I have been watching what you have been doing since the morning.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Very well, and what have you seen?' He said: 'My opinion about you is that you have not acted justly.'" The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry, then said: "Woe to you! If justice is not with me, then with whom will it be?" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, shall we not kill him?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave him, for he will have some followers who will go to extremes in the religion until they pass out of the religion just as an arrow passes through the target. A man examines its arrowhead and sees nothing on it; then he examines its shaft and nothing is found; then he looks at the notch where the bowstring meets the arrow and nothing is found on it, even though it has passed through the dung and the blood."
Ahmad recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded it in abridged form. The narrators of Ahmad are thiqat (trustworthy).
