Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The people said something about him and praised him, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who will kill him?" Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will." He went and found that the man had drawn a line around himself and was praying there. When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) saw him in that state, he came back and did not kill him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who will kill him?" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will." He went and saw that, within that line, the man was praying, so he came back and did not kill him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who will take care of him" (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) "Who will kill him?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You would do it, but I do not think that you will reach him." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) went and saw that the man had already gone.
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
