Abd al-Malik bin Mulayl al-Salihi narrates: On a Friday I was sitting near the pulpit. Muhammad bin Abi Hudhayfah came out and stood upon the pulpit. He began delivering the sermon, then recited a surah of the Qur'an before the people, and he was the finest of reciters. Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth. I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Some people will surely recite the Qur'an, yet the Qur'an will not go beyond their throats, and they will pass out of the religion just as an arrow passes through the target.'"
Ahmad recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded it in abridged form. The narrators of both are thiqat (trustworthy).
