Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "After sixty (years) there will come people who will neglect the prayer and follow their desires, and soon they will reach Hell. Then there will come people who will recite the Qur'an, but it will not go beyond their throats. Three kinds of people will recite the Qur'an: a believer, a hypocrite and a sinner." The narrator Bashir says: I asked al-Walid: "What is meant by these three kinds of people?" He said: "The hypocrite means the one who rejects it; the sinner means the one who eats (earns a living) by it; and the believer means the one who believes in it."
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
Al-Tabarani recorded it in the same way in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat.
