Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 10419

Hasan bin Abi al-Hasan al-Basri narrates: Al-Suraym met Abdullah bin Khabbab at Bidar, which is a village of Basrah. He was at that time heading to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) in Kufah, and with him were his wife, his children and his slave-girl. He (al-Suraym) said: "This is a man from among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah; we should ask him about our condition, our affair and our setting out." The people said: "Very well." So they went to him and said: "Will you not tell us whether you heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say anything about us?" He said: "As for you specifically, I did not hear that; but I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'After me there will come people who will recite the Qur'an, but it will not go beyond their throats. They will pass out of the religion, and then they will not come back into it until the arrow returns to the place from which it left. Glad tidings for the one who kills them, and glad tidings also for the one whom they kill. They (that is, the Khawarij) will be the worst of the slain beneath the sky and upon the earth, and they will be the dogs of Hell.'"
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains the narrator Muhammad bin Umar al-Kala'i, who is da'if (weak). A hadith narrated from this Companion will come later in the chapter on tribulations.
