Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 10425

Safwan bin Muhriz reports from Sayyiduna Jundub bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he passed by some people who were reciting the Qur'an, and he said: "Do not let these people deceive you. Today they are reciting the Qur'an, and tomorrow they will face one another with swords." Then he said: "Bring me some reciters of the Qur'an, and let them be elderly people." The narrator says: So I brought Nafi' bin al-Azraq to him, and I brought Mirdas bin Bilal to him, and some other people along with the two of them, six or eight persons. When we came into the presence of Sayyiduna Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The likeness of the one who teaches people goodness and forgets himself is that of a lamp which gives light to people and burns itself. Whoever shows off his deeds, Allah Almighty will expose his showing off. Know that when a person dies, the first part of his body to rot is his belly, so one should let nothing but what is pure enter his belly. Whoever among you is able to ensure that not even a handful of blood comes between him and Paradise, let him do so."
