Further reports on the Kharijites

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) concerning this saying of Allah Almighty: "O you who believe, do not take as intimates anyone other than yourselves (followers of another religion). They will spare no effort (in trying to stir up) mischief for you; they wish (to see) you in hardship. Hatred (or enmity) has already appeared from their mouths, and what their breasts conceal (that hatred) is greater. We have made the signs clear to you, if you understand." He said: "These are the Khawarij."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umayr al-Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When someone rebels against you while you are united behind a ruler, and that person wants to split the staff of the Muslims and scatter their unity, then kill that person."
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains narrators whom I do not know.

It is reported from Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Surayh al-Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "Shall I not narrate to you a hadith which my ears heard and which my heart preserved, having heard it from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? Had I not heard this hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) once, or twice, or three times, or four times, or five times, or six times, or seven times, my estimation is that I would not have narrated it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you are united as one community, and then someone comes who wants to create division within your community and split your staff, kill him, whoever among you he may be."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains the narrator al-Abbas bin Awsajah, whom I do not know.

Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Kill the one who breaks away, whoever he may be."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains the narrator Salih bin Mutayyam, whom I do not know; the remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Abu Ghalib narrates: In the time of Abd al-Malik I was in Damascus. The heads of the Khawarij were brought there and hung up on wooden poles. I came to see whether there was anyone among them whom I knew, and Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) was also present there. I drew near to him. I looked at the poles, and Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "These are the dogs of Hell." He said this three times, and then said: "These are the worst of those slain beneath the sky, and whoever they killed is the best of those slain beneath the sky." He said this three times as well. Then he began to weep. I said: "O Abu Umamah, why are you weeping?" He said: "These people were formerly upon our religion, and the thought came to me of where these people have now gone." I said: "Is this something you are saying on the basis of your own opinion, or is it something you heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He said: "If I had heard this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) once, or twice, or three times" until he mentioned seven times, he said: "If I had not heard it from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (this many times), I would not have narrated it to you. Have you not read this verse in Surah Al Imran: 'On the Day when some faces will be white and some faces will be black,' up to the end of the verse: 'As for those whose faces are white, they will be in the mercy of Allah, and they will abide therein forever'?" Then he said: "The Jews differed and split into seventy-one sects, of which seventy sects will go to Hell and one to Paradise. The Christians differed and split into seventy-two sects, of which seventy-one sects will go to Hell and one sect to Paradise. And this Ummah will split into seventy-three sects, of which seventy-two sects will go to Hell and one sect to Paradise." We said: "Describe them to us." He replied: "The great majority (al-sawad al-a'zam)." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Ibn Majah recorded this narration, and al-Tirmidhi recorded it in abridged form.

Yahya bin Yazid al-Huna'i narrates: I was with al-Farazdaq in prison. Al-Farazdaq said: "May Allah Almighty not grant him deliverance from Malik bin al-Mundhir bin al-Jarud if I did not go walking in Makkah. I met Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked them both. I said: 'I am from the eastern lands. Some people have come out against us; they have begun fighting those who say la ilaha illa Allah (there is no god but Allah), and they have declared others besides them safe.' The two of them told me (al-Farazdaq said: may Allah Almighty not grant me deliverance from Malik bin al-Mundhir (if I did not hear this)), the two of them said: 'We heard our beloved friend (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever kills them will receive the reward of one martyr (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) two martyrs, and whoever they kill will receive the reward of a martyr."'"
