Hadith Beginning with the Letter Alif (أ)

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When your good deed pleases you and your bad deed grieves you, then (know that) you are a true believer."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When a morsel of one of you falls, let him remove the dirt (dust and the like) from it and eat it, and not leave it for Satan. And let each of you wipe the bowl (or plate) clean with his fingers, for you do not know in which part of your food the blessing lies."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When a morsel of one of you falls, let him remove whatever dirt is on it and eat it, and not leave it for Satan. And let him not wipe his hand with a towel (or napkin) until he has licked his fingers or had them licked (by his wife or the like), for he does not know in which part of his food the blessing has been placed."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When a man gives his wife water to drink, he is rewarded even for that."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you drinks an intoxicant, flog him; then if he drinks again, flog him; then if he drinks a third time, flog him again; and if he does it a fourth time as well, kill him."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you draws a sword from its sheath to look at it and then wants to hand it to his brother, let him first put it back in its sheath and then hand it to him (in its sheath)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of the People of the Book (the Jews and Christians) greets you with salam, then say (only this in reply): 'Wa 'alaykum' (and upon you too)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When the Jews greet you, one of them says (instead of 'As-salamu 'alaykum'): 'As-samu 'alayk' (death be upon you), so say (in reply): 'Wa 'alayk' (and upon you too)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you hears the (Fajr) call to prayer while the vessel (of food or drink for suhur) is in his hand, let him not put it down until he has fulfilled his need from it."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you hear a man saying, 'The people are ruined (or destroyed),' then in reality he is the most ruined of them (or, by spreading this despair, the one who ruins them)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you hear the call to prayer, respond to the one who calls to Allah (the muezzin) (that is, go to the mosque for the prayer)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you hear your neighbours saying (about you), 'You have done well,' then you have truly done well; and when you hear them saying, 'You have done wrong,' then you have certainly done wrong."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you hear the crowing of roosters, ask Allah Almighty for His bounty, for they have seen an angel; and when you hear the braying of donkeys, seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan, for they have seen a devil."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you hear a hadith from me which your hearts recognise, at which your hair and skin soften, and which you feel is close to you (that is, in accordance with the truth), then I am more entitled to it than you (that is, it is indeed my word). And when you hear a hadith from me which your hearts reject, from which your hair and skin recoil, and which you feel is far from you (that is, remote from reason and the Shariah), then I am even farther from it than you (that is, I have nothing to do with it)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you hear the muezzin (calling the adhan), say the same as he says. Then send blessings upon me, for whoever sends blessings upon me once, Allah Almighty sends down ten mercies upon him in return. Then ask Allah for al-Wasilah for me, for it is a station in Paradise that befits only one servant among the servants of Allah, and I hope that I will be that servant. So whoever asks for al-Wasilah for me, my intercession becomes due for him."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you hear the muezzin calling to the prayer (reciting the adhan or the iqamah), then you too say just as he says."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you hear the call to prayer, say just as the muezzin says."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you hear of the plague (spreading) in a land, do not go there; and if it breaks out in a land where you are, do not leave it fleeing from it."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you hear of the plague (epidemic) in a land, do not enter it; and if it breaks out in a land where you are, do not leave it in flight from it."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you hear of a people who have been swallowed up by the earth nearby, here, then (know that) the Hour has drawn very near."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you hear someone boasting in the manner of the Days of Ignorance (and displaying tribal partisanship in the name of his forefathers), then shame him in plain words (by telling him to bite his father's private part), and do not use any allusion or veiled words in this."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you hear the barking of dogs and the braying of donkeys at night, seek refuge with Allah from Satan, for they see things (devils) that you do not see. And when the sound of footsteps has died down (people have gone to sleep), go out less at night, for Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, spreads at night whatever He wills of His creation. And close the doors and mention the name of Allah over them, for Satan does not open a door that has been closed and over which the name of Allah has been mentioned. And cover the jars, tie up the mouths of the water-skins, and turn the vessels upside down."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you have fixed the measure (and weight), then measure it out in full."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you forgets in his prayer and does not remember whether he has prayed one rak'ah or two, let him build on one (that is, count it as only one); and if he does not remember whether he has prayed three or four, let him build on three, and let him perform two prostrations (of forgetfulness) before giving the salam."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When the imam forgets and stands up fully straight (instead of sitting for the tashahhud), two prostrations of forgetfulness are required of him; and if he has not stood fully straight (and sits back down), no prostration of forgetfulness is obligatory on him."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you drinks water (or any drink), let him not breathe into the vessel. Then if he wants to drink again, let him move the vessel away (from his mouth), and then drink again if he wishes."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you drinks something, let him not breathe into the vessel; and when he goes to relieve himself, let him not touch his private part with his right hand, nor clean himself (istinja) with his right hand."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you drinks (something), let him not drink it in a single breath."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When a dog drinks (by putting its mouth) from the vessel of one of you, let him wash that vessel seven times."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you drink milk, rinse your mouth (with water) afterwards, for it contains fat."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When people drink wine, flog them; then if they drink again, flog them; then if they drink (a third time), flog them; and if they drink (again after that), kill them."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you is in doubt between two rak'ahs and one, let him count it as one; when he is in doubt between two and three, let him count it as two; and when he is in doubt between three and four, let him count it as three, so that the doubt lies on the side of excess. Then let him complete the rest of his prayer, and then perform two prostrations (of forgetfulness) while sitting, before giving the salam."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you is in doubt in his prayer and does not know whether he has prayed two rak'ahs or three, let him cast aside the doubt and build on what is certain (that is, the lower number)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you is in doubt in his prayer and does not know how many he has prayed, three rak'ahs or four? Let him cast aside the doubt and build on what he is certain of, then perform two prostrations (of forgetfulness) before giving the salam. If he had prayed five, they (the prostrations) will make his prayer even; and if he had prayed a complete four, the two prostrations will be a cause of humiliation and disgrace for Satan."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you is in doubt in his prayer, let him cast aside the doubt and build on what is certain. Then when he is certain of the prayer's completion, let him perform two prostrations. If his prayer was complete, the (extra) rak'ah and the two prostrations will be voluntary; and if the prayer was incomplete, that rak'ah will complete the prayer and the two prostrations will be a cause of rubbing Satan's nose in the dust (humiliating him)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When any of you women attends the Isha prayer (in the mosque), let her not apply perfume."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When a Muslim points a weapon at his brother, the angels of Allah continue to curse him until he lowers it away from him."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When the people of Paradise have gone into Paradise and the people of Hell have gone into Hell, death will be brought until it is placed between Paradise and Hell, and then it will be slaughtered. Then a caller will call out: O people of Paradise! Now it is eternity, no death; and O people of Hell! Now it is eternity, no death. So the joy of the people of Paradise will increase even further, and the grief of the people of Hell will increase even further."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you prays facing a sutrah (barrier), let him stand close to it, so that Satan cannot pass between him and the sutrah."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you prays facing something that screens him from people, and someone wants to pass in front of him, let him stop him; and if he refuses, let him deal with him firmly (pushing him to the point of fighting), for he is nothing but a devil."
