«إذا سمعتم الحديث عني تعرفه قلوبكم وتلين له أشعاركم وأبشاركم وترون أنه منكم قريب فأنا أولاكم به، وإذا سمعتم الحديث عني تنكره قلوبكم وتنفر منه أشعاركم وأبشاركم وترون أنه بعيد منكم فأنا أبعدكم منه»
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you hear a hadith from me which your hearts recognise, at which your hair and skin soften, and which you feel is close to you (that is, in accordance with the truth), then I am more entitled to it than you (that is, it is indeed my word). And when you hear a hadith from me which your hearts reject, from which your hair and skin recoil, and which you feel is far from you (that is, remote from reason and the Shariah), then I am even farther from it than you (that is, I have nothing to do with it)."
