Hadith Beginning with the Letter Alif (أ)

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When fornication and usury (riba) become widespread in a town, its people have made the punishment of Allah lawful upon themselves."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When evil and sin become widespread on the earth, Allah Almighty sends down His punishment upon the people of the earth, even if there are righteous people among them. The affliction that befalls the people in general befalls them (the righteous) as well, then they (the righteous) return to the mercy of Allah and His forgiveness."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you visits a sick person, let him say: 'O Allah, heal Your servant, so that he may inflict harm on an enemy for Your sake, or walk to a prayer for You.'"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When a man goes to visit his sick Muslim brother, he remains among the paths of Paradise (or among the picking of its fruits) until he sits down (with him). When he sits, mercy envelops him. If he went in the morning, seventy thousand angels pray for his forgiveness until the evening, and if he went in the evening, seventy thousand angels pray for his forgiveness until the morning."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you sneezes and praises Allah (that is, says Al-hamdu lillah), respond to him (by saying Yarhamukallah), and if he does not praise Allah, then do not respond to him."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you sneezes, let the person sitting with him respond to him. If he sneezes more than three times, he has a cold, so he is not to be responded to after three times."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you sneezes, let him place his two palms (or a cloth) over his face and lower his voice."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you sneezes, let him say: 'Al-hamdu lillahi Rabbil-'alamin (All praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds)', and let (the listener) say to him: 'Yarhamukallah (May Allah have mercy on you)', and let him (the one who sneezed, in reply) say: 'Yaghfirullahu lana wa lakum (May Allah forgive us and you)'."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you sneezes, let him say: 'Al-hamdu lillahi 'ala kulli hal (All praise is for Allah in every situation)', and let those around him say to him: 'Yarhamukallah (May Allah have mercy on you)', and let him say (in reply) to those around him: 'Yahdikumullahu wa yuslihu balakum (May Allah guide you and set your affairs right)'."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you sneezes, let him say: 'Al-hamdu lillah (All praise is for Allah)'. When he has said it, let his brother or companion say to him: 'Yarhamukallah (May Allah have mercy on you)'. When he says 'Yarhamukallah' to him, let him (the one who sneezed, in reply) say: 'Yahdikumullahu wa yuslihu balakum (May Allah guide you and set your affairs right)'."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When a sin is committed on the earth, whoever is present there and detests it is like one who was absent from it (that is, he is safe from the consequences of that sin), and whoever is absent from it but is pleased with it (the sin) is like one who was present there."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you commit an evil deed (a sin), follow it immediately with a good deed; that good deed will wipe it out."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you make broth, add plenty of water to it, and then give some of it to your neighbours as well."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When the sun sets, keep your children (from going outside), for that is the time when the devils spread out."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you becomes angry, let him fall silent."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you becomes angry while standing, let him sit down. If the anger leaves him (then well and good); otherwise, let him lie down."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When a man becomes angry and says: 'A'udhu billah (I seek refuge with Allah)', his anger subsides."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you become angry, sit down."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When Persia and Rome (their lands and treasures) are opened up to you, what kind of people will you be? It was said: We will remain as Allah has commanded us. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Or otherwise? You will compete with one another (in greed for the world), then you will envy one another, then you will turn your backs on one another (cutting off relations), then you will hate one another, then you will go to the dwellings of the Muhajirun and set some of them over the necks of others."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When Egypt is conquered, accept my counsel to treat the Copts well, for they have (from us) a covenant of protection as well as ties of kinship."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you finishes the final tashahhud, he should seek refuge with Allah from four things, saying: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min adhabi jahannam, wa min adhabil-qabr, wa min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat, wa min sharri fitnatil-masihid-dajjal' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell, from the punishment of the grave, from the trial of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the Masih al-Dajjal)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you finishes his prayer (that is, its tashahhud), he should supplicate (for refuge) from four things, and after that he may supplicate for whatever he wishes: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min adhabi jahannam, wa adhabil-qabr, wa fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat, wa fitnatil-masihid-dajjal' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell, the punishment of the grave, the trial of life and death, and the trial of the Masih al-Dajjal)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you is startled with fear in his sleep, he should say: 'A'udhu bi-kalimatillahit-tammati min ghadabihi wa 'iqabihi wa sharri 'ibadihi, wa min hamazatish-shayatini wa an yahdurun' (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, from the evil of His servants, and from the whisperings of the devils and from their coming to me), and it (the dream or fear) will certainly never harm him."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When the people of Syria (al-Sham) become corrupt (fall into corruption), there will be no good left in you. And a group from my Ummah will always remain victorious upon the truth; whoever tries to disgrace (or abandon) them will not be able to harm them until the Hour is established."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you fights his brother (or strikes him), he should avoid (striking) the face."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you says Amin in prayer and the angels in the heaven also say Amin, and the (saying) of one of them coincides with the other, the past sins of that (person who said Amin) are forgiven."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When the imam says Sami'allahu liman hamidah, then say Allahumma Rabbana lakal-hamd, for whoever's words coincide with the words of the angels, his past sins are forgiven."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When the imam says Sami'allahu liman hamidah, then say Allahumma Rabbana wa lakal-hamd."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When the imam says: Ghayril-maghdubi 'alayhim wa lad-dallin (not of those who have earned anger, nor of those who go astray) [Surah al-Fatihah: 7], then say Amin, for whoever's words coincide with the words of the angels, his past sins are forgiven."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When a person says to his brother: Jazakallahu khayran (May Allah reward you with good), then he has indeed fully discharged the right of praising him."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When a person says to his brother: 'O disbeliever!', then one of the two certainly becomes deserving of it (the verdict of disbelief) (that is, if the other is not truly a disbeliever, the one who said it himself falls under that disbelief)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When a person says to his brother: 'O disbeliever!', it is like killing him, and cursing a believer is also like killing him."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When a person calls a hypocrite Ya sayyidi (O my master or chief), he has certainly angered his Lord."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When a person says, 'The people are ruined,' he is the most ruined of them all (or he is the one who ruins them by spreading his despair)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When the servant says: La ilaha illallahu wallahu akbar (There is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest), Allah Almighty says: My servant has spoken the truth; there is no god but Me, and I am the Greatest. Then when he says: La ilaha illallahu wahdahu, Allah says: My servant has spoken the truth; there is no god but Me, I am alone. Then when he says: La ilaha illallahu la sharika lahu, Allah says: My servant has spoken the truth; there is no god but Me, and I have no partner. Then when he says: La ilaha illallahu lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd, Allah says: My servant has spoken the truth; there is no god but Me, the dominion is Mine alone and all praise is for Me alone. Then when he says: La ilaha illallahu wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah, Allah says: My servant has spoken the truth; there is no god but Me, and the power to avoid sins and the strength to do good come only through My enabling. Whoever is granted (the recitation of) these words at the time of his death, the Fire of Hell will not touch him."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When the muezzin says: Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, and one of you says (in response): Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar; then the muezzin says: Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, and he says: Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah; then the muezzin says: Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah, and he says: Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah; then the muezzin says: Hayya 'alas-salah, and he says: La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah; then the muezzin says: Hayya 'alal-falah, and he says: La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah; then the muezzin says: Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, and he says: Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar; then the muezzin says: La ilaha illallah, and he too says from the sincerity of his heart: La ilaha illallah, then he will enter Paradise."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you stands for prayer, he should not spit in front of him, for as long as he is at his place of prayer he is conversing intimately with Allah, the Blessed and Exalted; nor should he spit to his right, for on his right there is an angel. Rather, he should spit to his left or under his foot and bury it (in the soil)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you gets up from his bed and then returns to it, he should dust it off three times with the edge of his lower garment, for he does not know what came onto the bed after he left it. And when he lies down, he should recite this supplication: 'Bismika Rabbi wada'tu janbi wa bika arfa'uhu, fa-in amsakta nafsi farhamha, wa in arsaltaha fahfazha bima tahfazu bihi 'ibadakas-salihin' (O my Lord, with Your name I have laid down my side and by Your help I will raise it; so if You withhold my soul (in the state of sleep), have mercy on it, and if You release it (by giving it life again), protect it in the same way that You protect Your righteous servants). Then when he wakes up, he should recite this supplication: 'Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi 'afani fi jasadi wa radda 'alayya ruhi wa adhina li bi-dhikrihi' (All praise is for Allah who granted me well-being in my body, returned my soul to me, and enabled me to remember Him)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you stands at night (for tahajjud) and the Qur'an falters on his tongue (that is, he cannot recite properly because sleep overcomes him) and he does not understand what he is reciting, he should lie down."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you wakes up from sleep and intends to perform ablution, he should not put his hand into the vessel until he has washed it, for he does not know where his hand spent the night or on what he placed it."
