Hadith Beginning with the Letter Alif (أ)

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When it is the first night of the month of Ramadan, the devils and the rebellious jinn are chained, and the gates of Hell are closed, so not one of its gates is opened, and the gates of Paradise are opened, so not one of its gates is closed. And every night a caller calls out: 'O seeker of good, come forward! And O seeker of evil, desist!' And Allah frees many people from the Fire, and that happens every night."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When there is strife (and civil war) among the Muslims, make yourself a sword of wood (that is, take no part at all in their fighting among themselves)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When a man has two wives and does not treat them justly, he will come on the Day of Resurrection with half of his body fallen (paralysed)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When three people are together, two should not converse privately to the exclusion of the third."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When three people are on a journey, they should appoint one of themselves as their leader (amir)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When the first darkness of night begins to fall, keep your children (from going out), for the devils spread out at that time. Then when an hour of the night has passed, let them go. Close the doors and mention the name of Allah, for the devil does not open a closed door. Tie up the mouths of your waterskins and mention the name of Allah, and cover your vessels and mention the name of Allah, even if you only place something across them, and put out your lamps."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When it is menstrual blood, it is black blood that is recognisable. So when that comes, refrain from prayer; and when it is the other kind (istihadah, that is, blood of illness), perform ablution (for each prayer) and pray, for it is only the blood of a vein."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When the month of Ramadan comes, perform Umrah in it, for performing Umrah in this month carries a reward equal to a Hajj."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When it is some matter of your worldly affairs, you understand it better; and when it is some matter concerning your religion, then bring it to me (that is, follow me)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you has two garments, he should pray wearing both of them (the lower wrap and the upper sheet). If he has only one garment, he should tie it as a lower wrap and should not wrap himself in it the way the Jews do (leaving the shoulders bare)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When the servant of one of you has borne the toil (of preparing food) for him and brought it, he should feed him from it as well. If he does not do so (by seating him with him), then let him at least hand him a morsel or two (from it)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you has hair (on his head), he should honour it and look after it (that is, wash it, oil it and keep it groomed)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When it is the night of the middle (the fifteenth) of Sha'ban, Allah Almighty looks upon His creation with a special manifestation. He forgives the believers, gives respite to the disbelievers, and leaves the people of rancour in their state because of their rancour until they abandon it (the harbouring of rancour)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When there are three people (together), two should not converse privately to the exclusion of the third."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When there are three people, one of them should lead them in prayer, and the one most entitled to lead is the one among them with the most knowledge of the Noble Qur'an."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When it is Friday, the angels sit at the doors of the mosque and record the people who come according to their ranks (that is, the time of their arrival). So one man is like the one who offers a camel in sacrifice, another like the one who offers a cow in sacrifice, another like the one who offers a goat in sacrifice, another like the one who offers a hen, another like the one who offers a sparrow, and another like the one who offers an egg. Then when the muezzin gives the call to prayer and the imam sits on the pulpit, they (the angels) roll up their registers, enter the mosque and listen to the remembrance (the sermon)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When it is Friday, at every one of the doors of the mosque there are angels who record the people according to their ranks, the first and then the one after him. Then when the imam sits (on the pulpit), they roll up their registers and come to listen to the remembrance (the sermon). The one who comes early (for the Friday prayer) is like one who offers a camel (in charity), then like one who offers a cow, then like one who offers a ram, then like one who offers a hen, and then like one who offers an egg."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When it is Friday and the night of Friday, send abundant blessings (durud) upon me."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When it is the Day of Resurrection, the sun will be brought so close to the servants that it will be at a distance of one or two miles. The sun will scorch them, and people will be immersed in sweat according to their deeds: among them will be one whose sweat reaches his ankles, one whose sweat reaches his knees, one whose sweat reaches his waist, and one whom the sweat will have bridled (that is, it will reach his mouth)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When it is the Day of Resurrection, Allah Almighty will give every individual of this (Muhammadan) Ummah a man from among the disbelievers, and it will be said to him: 'This is your ransom from the Fire of Hell.'"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When it is the Day of Resurrection, Allah Almighty will send to every believer an angel with whom there will be a disbeliever. The angel will say to the believer: 'O believer, take this disbeliever; this is your ransom from the Fire of Hell.'"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When it is the Day of Resurrection, I will intercede and say: 'O my Lord, admit into Paradise everyone who has in his heart faith even the size of a mustard seed.' So they will enter Paradise. Then he says: 'Admit into Paradise also everyone who has in his heart the least thing (of faith, even less than that).'"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When it is the Day of Resurrection, I will be the imam of all the prophets, their spokesman, and their intercessor, and I say this without pride."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When it is the Day of Resurrection, a caller will call out: 'Whoever did a deed for anyone other than Allah, let him seek his reward from the one for whom he did it.'"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When it is the day of fasting for one of you, he should neither speak obscenely nor behave ignorantly (with clamour). If someone abuses him or fights with him, he should say (to him): 'I am fasting, I am fasting.'"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When the imam says the takbir, you also say the takbir; when he bows, you also bow; when he prostrates, you also prostrate; when he raises his head from bowing, you also raise your heads; and when he leads the prayer sitting, all of you pray sitting."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When two parties both dislike taking the oath, or both like it (that is, both are claimants), they should cast lots over it."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you are three, two should not converse privately to the exclusion of the other until you mingle with (other) people, for that will grieve him (the third)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you dress and when you perform ablution, begin with your right side."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When the devil plays with one of you in his sleep (that is, shows him a bad or frightening dream), he should not tell people about it."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you meets his brother, he should greet him with salam. Then if a tree, a wall or a stone comes between them and he meets him (again), he should greet him with salam (again)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When a man meets his Muslim brother, he should say: As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah (Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When you meet the polytheists on the road, do not initiate the greeting of salam with them, and compel them to the narrowest part of the road."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you dies, his abode is presented to him morning and evening: if he is among the people of Paradise, then (his place) among the people of Paradise, and if he is among the people of Hell, then among the people of Hell. And it is said to him: 'This is your abode, until Allah Almighty raises you to it on the Day of Resurrection.'"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When a person dies, his deeds are cut off except for three things: an ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah), or knowledge from which benefit is derived, or a righteous child who prays for him."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When a companion of yours dies, leave him alone, and do not speak ill of him."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When a servant's child dies, Allah Almighty says to His angels: 'Have you taken the soul of My servant's child?' They say: 'Yes.' Then Allah says: 'Have you taken the fruit (the piece) of his heart?' They say: 'Yes.' Then Allah says: 'So what did My servant say?' They say: 'He praised You and said: Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (We belong to Allah and to Him we return).' Then Allah Almighty says: 'Build for My servant a house in Paradise and name it Bayt al-Hamd (the House of Praise).'"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When one of you passes through our mosque or our marketplace carrying arrows, he should hold their heads in his fist, so that he does not wound any Muslim."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When forty-two nights have passed over the drop of fluid (after its settling in the mother's womb), Allah Almighty sends an angel to it who shapes it and creates its hearing, its sight, its skin, its flesh and its bones. Then he says: 'O my Lord, will it be male or female?' And your Lord decrees what He wills, and the angel writes it down. Then he says: 'O my Lord, what is its term of life?' And your Lord says what He wills, and the angel writes it down. Then he says: 'O my Lord, what is its provision?' And your Lord decrees what He wills, and the angel writes it down. Then the angel goes out with the scroll (the record of destiny) in his hand, and he neither adds to the command nor takes anything away from it."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"When some men pass by a group of people and one of those passing greets those sitting with salam, and one of these (sitting) returns the greeting, it suffices on behalf of these (passing) and on behalf of these (sitting)."
