Amir al-Sha'bi said: Fatimah bint Qays (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated to me; she was married to Abu Hafs bin Amr, or Amr bin Hafs. She came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) concerning maintenance and housing, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "Listen, O daughter of Qays!" He gestured with his hand and spread it over part of his face, as if he were screening himself from her, and as if he were saying: "Be quiet. A woman is owed maintenance by her husband only as long as he still has the right to take her back; if he no longer has that right, she is entitled to neither maintenance nor housing. Go to so-and-so (or he said: Umm Sharik) and spend your waiting period at her house." Then he said: "No, she is a woman with whom people gather (or he said: at whose house people sit and talk). Spend your waiting period in the house of Ibn Umm Maktum."

Al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The people of Madinah differed with us on the question of housing and maintenance for the divorced woman, and they said to me: "The hadith of Fatimah bint Qays (may Allah be pleased with her) is the judge between us and you." So I went to her and asked her, and she said: My husband divorced me, and his brother said to me: "You are entitled to neither housing nor maintenance." So I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O daughter of Qays! Housing and maintenance are due only as long as your husband still has the right to take you back."

Sa'id bin Yazid al-Bajali (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Amir al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) went in to Fatimah bint Qays (may Allah be pleased with her), the sister of al-Dahhak bin Qays al-Qurashi and the wife of Abu Amr bin Hafs bin al-Mughirah al-Makhzumi, and she said: Abu Amr bin Hafs sent me word of my divorce while he was setting out with an army for Yemen. I asked his guardians for maintenance and housing for myself, and they said: "He has sent us nothing about that, nor has he instructed us about it." So I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Abu Amr bin Hafs has sent me word of my divorce, and I asked for housing and maintenance for myself, but his relatives said: 'He has sent us nothing about that.'" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Housing and maintenance are for the woman only when her husband has the right to take her back. But when she is no longer lawful for him until she marries another husband, she is entitled to neither maintenance nor housing."

Sayyidah Fatimah bint Qays (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I married Hafs bin al-Mughirah, and he was one of the best young men of Quraysh. When I was left without a husband, Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) proposed to me (coming) with a group of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) proposed to me on behalf of his freed slave Usamah bin Zayd. I had been told that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever loves me, let him love Usamah too." So when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke to me, I said: "My affair is in your hands; marry me to whomever you wish." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Move to the house of Umm Sharik. Umm Sharik is a wealthy woman who spends a great deal in the way of Allah, and guests stay at her house." I said: "I will do so." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not do so, for Umm Sharik has a great many guests, and I would dislike that your head covering should fall, or the garment be lifted from your shins, and the people see of you something you would dislike. Rather, move to the house of your cousin Abdullah bin Amr bin Umm Maktum." He was a man of Banu Fihr, Fihr of Quraysh, and from the same clan as Fatimah herself. So I moved to his house.

Al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Fatimah bint Qays (may Allah be pleased with her) how her affair had gone. She said: My husband gave me three divorces all at once, so I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "My in-laws claim that I am entitled to neither housing nor maintenance." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They have spoken the truth. Go and spend your waiting period in the house of Ibn Umm Maktum." He was blind. Fatimah said: Then Abu al-Jahm bin Hudhayfah, and after him Mu'awiyah, proposed to her after her waiting period was over, and she consulted the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "As for Abu Jahm, he beats women a great deal; and as for Mu'awiyah, he is destitute (that is, penniless) and owns nothing. But why do you not consider Usamah?" I said: "Shall I marry Usamah?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, marry Usamah."

Al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A man and I set out until we came to Fatimah bint Qays (may Allah be pleased with her), the sister of al-Dahhak bin Qays, and we said: O Fatimah! Narrate to us a hadith that you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). She said: Yes. Then she fed us fresh dates and gave us a drink, and she said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out one day and sat on the pulpit, and the people sought refuge with him and clung to him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people! Only a piece of news has made me sit here." Fatimah said: And this was at a time other than the time at which he (peace and blessings be upon him) usually sat. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said that Tamim al-Dari had come to him today at midday or in the intense heat, and he told him that his cousins had been cast by their ship in the sea onto an island which they did not recognise, so they went out walking on it, and they met something about which they did not know whether it was a man or a woman, because it was covered with hair. They asked: Who are you? It said: I am al-Jassasah. They said: Give us news. It said: I will neither give you news nor ask you for news; if you want news, then go to this monastery. And it pointed to a monastery on the island, a short distance away. So we walked on until we entered it, and there was a man bound in great, heavy chains, with his back leaning against the foot of a mountain. He said: Who are you? We said: Some people of the Arabs. He said: What has become of that unlettered Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who was being awaited? We said: He has appeared. He said: What is the state of the date palms between Amman and Baysan? We said: They are as they were, giving food and bearing fruit. He said: What is the state of the spring of Zughar? We said: It is as it was. He said: What is the state of the lake of Tiberias? We said: It is full. Then he struck the sole of his foot with his hand and said: If I were to come out from this place of mine, I would not leave any spot on earth without treading upon it, except Makkah and Taybah. Then he let out a sigh and began to walk in the mountain, then he fell; then he walked again, farther than that, then he fell; then he walked a third time and went into the mountain, then he fell. We said: What is the matter with him, may Allah not bless him! And it was as if the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was pleased with this statement of his, "Makkah and Taybah", so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Taybah (he said it twice) the Dajjal will not be able to enter; there is no pass into it without an angel stationed over it with a drawn sword, and he (the Dajjal) is from the direction of Yemen." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed with his hand, with the sleeve of his shirt (over his hand), about thirty times towards Iraq (and said): "And he is (in that direction)", about thirty times.

Sayyidah Fatimah bint Qays (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I heard the caller of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) calling out: Gather for the prayer! So I went out with some women of the Ansar until we reached the mosque, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in the Zuhr prayer. Then he ascended the pulpit and turned his face towards us, smiling, and then said: "By Allah! I have not gathered you for something to hope for nor for something to fear, but because of an account which Tamim al-Dari narrated to me. He came to me, accepted Islam and gave the pledge of allegiance, and he told me that he had boarded (a ship) with thirty men from Lakhm and Judham, and these two are among the tribes of the Arabs from the people of Yemen. The sea met them at a time when it was stormy, and the waves played with them for a month; then, close to sunset, they cast them onto one of the islands of the sea. Suddenly we came across a very hairy beast whose front could not be told from its back. We said: O beast! What are you? Allah gave it permission, and it spoke to us in a clear and fluent tongue, and said: I am al-Jassasah. We said: What is al-Jassasah? It said: Get away from me; go to that monastery at the far end of the island, for in it there is a man who is intensely eager for your news. He said: So we came to the monastery, and there was a man, the biggest man I have ever seen, and the finest of them in body. His right eye was blotted out, as though his eye were a spot of phlegm on a plastered wall. Both his hands were tied to his neck, and both his feet were bound with fetters from his knees to his feet. We said to him: O man! What are you? He said: As for my news, it has already reached you; but tell me your news: what has brought you onto this island? For since I came to this island no human being has reached it. So we told him, and he said: Tell me about the lake of Tiberias: what is its state? We said: About which aspect of it are you asking? He said: Has its water dried up? And have any wonders appeared in it? We said: No. He said: Listen! That will surely happen. Then he was silent for a long while, then said: Tell me about the spring of Zughar: what is its state? We said: About which aspect of it are you asking? He said: Do its people farm with (its water)? We said: Yes. He said: Listen! Its water will surely sink into the ground. Then he was silent for a long while, then said: Tell me about the date palms of Baysan: what is their state? We said to him: About which aspect of them are you asking? He said: Do they bear fruit? We said: Yes. He said: Listen! They will not bear fruit. Then he was silent for a long while, then said: Tell me about the unlettered Prophet: what has become of him? We said: About which aspect of him are you asking? He said: Has he appeared? We said: Yes. He said: What have the Arabs done with him? We said to him: Some of them have fought him and some of them have believed him. He said: Listen! Whoever believes him, that is better for him. Then we said: O man! Tell us your news. He said: Do you not know me? We said: Had we known you, we would not have asked you. He said: I am the Dajjal. Soon I will be given permission to come out, and when I come out I will tread over all the lands of the Arabs except Makkah and Taybah; whenever I intend to enter either of them, an angel with a drawn sword in his hand will confront me and turn me back from them." Abu al-Ash'hab said: Amir al-Sha'bi said: Fatimah bint Qays (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) raise both his hands until we saw the whiteness of his armpits, then he said: "Shall I not tell you that this is Taybah?" three times. Then he said: "Shall I not tell you that he is in the sea of Syria?" three times. Then a kind of swoon came over him (peace and blessings be upon him) for a while, then he found rest, then the state was lifted from him, and he said: "Rather, he is in the sea of Iraq. He will come out, when he comes out, from a village of a town called Isfahan, (a village) called Rustaqabad, and in front of him there will come out seventy thousand people wearing special shawls. With him there will be two rivers, a river of water and a river of fire. So whoever of you lives to see that, and is told: Enter the water, let him not enter it, for in reality it is fire; and when he is told: Enter the fire, let him enter it, for in reality it is water."

Amir bin Sharahil al-Sha'bi, of Sha'b Hamdan, narrates that he asked Fatimah bint Qays (may Allah be pleased with her), the sister of al-Dahhak bin Qays, who was among the first women emigrants: Narrate to me a hadith that you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and do not attribute it to anyone other than yourself. She said: If you wish, I will certainly do so. He said to her: Yes, tell me. She said: I heard the call of the caller of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) calling out: The prayer in congregation (is about to begin)! So I went out to the mosque and prayed with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I was in the row of women which was next to the backs of the people. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished his prayer, he sat on the pulpit, smiling, and said: "Let every person stay at his place of prayer." Then he said: "Do you know why I have gathered you?" The people said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah! I have not gathered you for something to hope for nor for something to fear; rather, I have gathered you because Tamim al-Dari was a Christian man; he came, gave the pledge of allegiance and became a Muslim, and he narrated to me an account which agrees with what I used to tell you about al-Masih al-Dajjal. He told me that he boarded a sea-going ship with thirty men from Lakhm and Judham, and the waves tossed them about in the sea for a month; then they reached the island in the sea where the sun sets. They sat in the ship's small boat and entered the island, and there they met a beast with a great deal of hair; because of the abundance of hair they could not tell where its front was and where its back was. They said: Woe to you, what are you? It said: I am al-Jassasah. They said: What is al-Jassasah? It said: O people! Go to this man in the monastery, for he is intensely eager for your news. He said: When it named a man to us, we became afraid of it, lest it be a female devil. So we went quickly until we entered the monastery, and there we saw the biggest human being in build that we had ever seen, and the most tightly bound; both his hands were tied to his neck, and from his knees to his ankles he was bound in iron. We said: Woe to you, what are you? He said: You have obtained my news; now tell me, what are you? They said: We are some people of the Arabs. We boarded a sea-going ship, and the sea met us at a time when it had become stormy, and the waves tossed us about for a month; then they cast us onto this island of yours. We sat in its small boat and entered the island, and we met a beast with a great deal of hair; because of the abundance of hair we could not tell where its front was and where its back was. We said: Woe to you, what are you? It said: I am al-Jassasah. We said: What is al-Jassasah? It said: Go to this man, for he is intensely eager for your news. So we came to you quickly, and we were frightened of it, and we were not sure that it was not a female devil. He said: Tell me about the date palms of Baysan. We said: What do you want to know about them? He said: I am asking you about their fruit: do they bear fruit? We said to him: Yes. He said: Soon they will stop bearing fruit. He said: Tell me about the lake of Tiberias. We said: What do you want to know about it? He said: Is there water in it? We said: It is full of water. He said: Tell me about the spring of Zughar. They said: What do you want to know about it? He said: Is there water in the spring, and do its people farm with the water of the spring? We said: Yes, it is full of water, and its people farm with its water. He said: Tell me about the unlettered Prophet: what has he done? They said: He came out of Makkah and settled in Yathrib. He said: Did the Arabs fight him? We said: Yes. He said: What did he do with them? So we told him that he had prevailed over the Arabs around him and they had obeyed him. He said to them: Did that really happen? We said: Yes. He said: It was better for them to obey him. I will tell you about myself: I am al-Masih al-Dajjal, and soon I will be given permission to come out. Then I will come out and travel through the earth, and I will not leave any town without descending upon it within forty days, except Makkah and Taybah; both of them are forbidden to me. Whenever I want to enter either of them, an angel with a drawn sword in his hand will confront me and bar me from it, and on every pass into it there will be angels guarding it." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), striking the pulpit with his staff, said: "This is Taybah, this is Taybah, this is Taybah", meaning Madinah, "Had I not told you this before?" The people said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tamim al-Dari's account pleased me because it agrees with what I used to tell you about him, and about Madinah and Makkah. Listen! He is in the sea of Syria or the sea of Yemen. No, rather he is towards the east; he is towards the east; he is towards the east; he is towards the east." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed with his hand towards the east. Fatimah said: I preserved this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

Sayyidah Fatimah bint Qays (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the call "al-Salatu jami'ah (gather for the prayer)" at a time when he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not usually give such a call. So the people went out to the mosque; then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came and ascended the pulpit, and then said: "I warn you of the Dajjal" (three times), "He did not exist in past times, and he will surely appear among you, O Ummah! Tamim al-Dari has told me that he sailed on the sea of Syria with some people of Lakhm and Judham, and the wind cast them onto one of its islands. There they found a black creature dragging its hair. They asked: What are you? It said: I am al-Jassasah. They said: Give us news. It said: I will neither give you news nor ask you for news; but go to a man in this monastery, for he is intensely eager for your news. So they went to him, and there was a man whose eye was blotted out, bound in iron to a pillar. He said: What are you? They said: We are Arabs. He said: What is the state of the Arabs? We said: An unlettered Prophet has been sent to them who calls them to Allah. He said: Then what have the people done? They said: Some people have followed him and some have abandoned him. He said: Listen, if they follow him and believe him, that is better for them, if only they knew. Then he said: What is the state of the Arabs? What do they wear? We said: Wool and cotton, which their women spin. He struck his thigh with his hand and then said: Far from it! Then he said: What is the state of the date palms of Baysan? We said: They are strong, and we get their fruit every year. He struck his thigh with his hand and then said: Far from it! Then he said: What is the state of the spring of Zughar? We said: Its water is abundant, it keeps gushing, and it quenches whoever comes to it. He struck his thigh with his hand and then said: Far from it! Then he said: If Allah were to free me from this bondage of mine, I would not leave any watering place without entering it, except Makkah and Taybah, for I am not permitted to enter either of them." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is Makkah, and this is Taybah; Allah has made it sacred just as Ibrahim (peace be upon him) made Makkah sacred. Listen! There is no pass and no street in it without an angel with a drawn sword over it, who will protect it from the Dajjal until the Day of Resurrection."

Al-Shaybani (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from al-Sha'bi, from Sayyidah Fatimah bint Qays (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: The people in Madinah were free of fear when suddenly the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out and led the Zuhr prayer; then he walked forward until he ascended the pulpit, and the people became frightened by this. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw this on their faces, he said: "O people! I have not come out for a matter that would frighten you; rather, news has come to me which has made me glad, so I wished to tell you of your Prophet's joy. Tamim al-Dari has told me that some of his cousins sailed on the sea, and their ship reached an island which they did not recognise. They went out walking, and they came across a human being about whom they did not know whether it was male or female, because of the abundance of hair. They asked: Who are you? It said: I am al-Jassasah. They said: Then tell us something. It said: Go to the monastery; in it there is a man who is intensely eager for you to talk to him. So they entered the monastery, and there was a man in chains, groaning severely. He asked: Who are you? They said: Of the people of Palestine, of the Arabian Peninsula. He said: Has their Prophet come out yet? They said: Yes. He said: Then what has he done? They said: Some people gave him the pledge of allegiance, and some abandoned him; so with the help of those of his companions who had pledged allegiance he fought, until he gained mastery over (all) the people of stone and clay. He said: What is the state of the lake of Tiberias? They said: It is full; its banks are overflowing. He said: What is the state of the spring of Zughar? They said: Its banks are overflowing. He said: What is the state of the date palms between Amman and Baysan? They said: They bear fruit. He said: If I were freed from this bondage of mine, I would tread over every part of the earth, except Taybah." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is Taybah" (twice), "In Madinah there is no road, no narrow or wide place, no easy or difficult place, without an angel stationed over it with a drawn sword; if he (the Dajjal) wanted to enter it, he would strike his face with the sword." Amir said: Then I met Muharrar bin Abi Hurayrah and narrated this to him, and he asked: Was anything added to it? I said: No. He said: She spoke the truth. I bear witness that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated this hadith to me, and he added something more to it: then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The sea of Syria, what is it? The sea of Iraq, what is it?" Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed with his hand twenty times towards the east. Then I met Abdullah bin Abi Bakr and narrated this to him, and he asked: Did she tell you anything additional in it? I said: No. He said: She spoke the truth. I bear witness that Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated this hadith to me, but she said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And in Madinah, whatever is in it."

Al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Fatimah bint Qays (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated to me; she said: One day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out and prayed the midday prayer, then sat down, and the people became alarmed. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people! I have not sat in this place to frighten you; rather, Tamim al-Dari came to me and gave me news which, out of joy and delight, kept me from my midday rest, so I wished to give you the glad tidings of your Prophet's joy. He told me that a group of his cousins sailed on the sea, and a storm struck them and forced them to take refuge on an island. They sat in the ship's small boat until they landed on the island, and there they came across a very hairy thing; they could not tell whether it was a man or a woman. They greeted it with salam and it returned their greeting. They said: Will you not tell us (anything)? It said: I will neither give you news nor ask you for news; but this monastery which you have seen, in it there is someone who is intensely eager to hear your news and to give you news. We said: Then what are you? It said: I am al-Jassasah. So they went on until they reached the monastery, and there was a man tightly bound in iron, showing grief and complaining much. They greeted him with salam and he returned their greeting, and said: Who are you? We said: Of the Arabs. He said: What is the state of the Arabs; has their Prophet come out? They said: Yes. He said: Then what did they do? We said: Good; they believed in him, followed him and affirmed him. He said: That is better for them. They said: And he had enemies, and Allah made him prevail over them. He said: So the Arabs' god is one, their word is one, and their religion is one? They said: Yes. He said: What is the state of the spring of Zughar? They said: It is overflowing; its people drink from it and water their crops from it. He said: What is the state of the date palms between Amman and Baysan? They said: They bear fruit every year. He said: What is the state of the lake of Tiberias? They said: It is full. Then he let out a sigh, then another sigh, then swore: If I were to come out from this place of mine, I would not leave any land of Allah's earth without treading upon it, except Taybah, for I have no power over it." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is something that has greatly gladdened me" (he said it three times), "Taybah is Madinah. Moreover, Allah has made my two sanctuaries forbidden to the Dajjal." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) swore: "By Allah, besides whom there is no god, there is no narrow road to it, no wide level place, and no mountain, without an angel with a drawn sword stationed over it until the Day of Resurrection; the Dajjal will not be able to enter it upon its inhabitants." Al-Sha'bi said: Then I met al-Muharrar bin Abi Hurayrah and narrated Fatimah's hadith to him, and he said: I bear witness that my father narrated this same hadith to me just as Fatimah narrated it to you, except that he said: "He is in the east." Then I met al-Qasim bin Muhammad, and he said: I bear witness that Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated this same hadith to me just as Fatimah narrated it to you, except that she said: "The two sanctuaries are forbidden to him: Makkah and Madinah." This wording is from the narration of Yahya bin Sa'id, and the other narrators narrated something similar.

Al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyidah Fatimah bint Qays (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ascended the pulpit and said: "O people! Tamim al-Dari has told me that some people of his tribe were at sea on their ship, and it broke apart, so some of them rode on a plank of the ship and came out onto an island in the sea. There they came across a dishevelled black woman with strange hair. They said: What are you? She said: I am al-Jassasah. Do you wonder at me? They said: Yes. She said: Then enter the palace. So they entered, and there was an old man bound with chains. He asked them who they were, and they told him. He said: What is the state of the spring of Zughar? And what is the state of the lake, and the date palms of Baysan? They told him, and he said: By the One by whom oaths are sworn, no land will remain without my treading upon it with my foot, except Taybah." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And this is Taybah."

Amir al-Sha'bi said: I visited Fatimah bint Qays (may Allah be pleased with her), and she offered me fresh dates from the dates of Ibn Talib, and I ate. Then she said: I was sitting in the mosque when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out and sat on the pulpit, and the people gathered around him. Fatimah said: And I supplicated so that I might hear, and I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "O people! I have not gathered you because of news that has come to me from any enemy of yours; rather, Tamim al-Dari has told me that some of his cousins sailed on the sea, and a wind struck them so that they did not know whether they had gone east or west. They anchored at an island and began walking on it, and they came across a beast dragging its hair. They said: What is this? It said: I am al-Jassasah. They said: Then what is the news? It said: The news is with the master of the monastery. So they went to the monastery, and there they saw the Dajjal and recognised him; he was bound in iron. He said: Who are you? They said: We are of the Ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: Has he been sent? They said: Yes. He said: What is the state of the lake of Tiberias? They told him about it. He said: What is the state of the date palms of Baysan? They told him about them. He said: What is the state of the spring of Zughar? They told him about it. Then he pointed to his two feet and said: You see these two feet of mine; no land of Allah's earth will remain without my treading upon it with them, except Makkah and Taybah. And he is in the sea between the east and the west, and he is nearer to the east." And the wording of both narrators is the same.

Dawud bin Abi Hind (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Amir al-Sha'bi, from Sayyidah Fatimah bint Qays al-Fihriyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came quickly one day until he ascended the pulpit, and it was announced among the people: The prayer in congregation (is about to begin)! Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed them and said: "I have not called you because of something to hope for or something to fear that has come down; rather, Tamim al-Dari has told me that some people of Palestine sailed on the sea, and the wind cast them onto one of the islands of the sea. They said: No. He said: Listen, soon he will prevail over them. Then he said: What is the state of the spring of Zughar? They said: It is full and overflowing. He said: What is the state of the lake of Tiberias? They said: It is full and overflowing. He said: What is the state of the date palms of Baysan? They said: They have given their first fruit. At this he leapt up, so much that they thought he would break free of his chains, and he said to them: I am the Dajjal. Listen, I will tread over the whole earth except Makkah and Taybah." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rejoice!" (thus he gave the Muslims glad tidings) "This is Taybah; he will not be able to enter it."

Abd al-Malik bin Umayr (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Amir al-Sha'bi, from Sayyidah Fatimah bint Qays al-Fihriyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: In the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) it was announced: The prayer in congregation (is about to begin)! So we went out and sat behind the shoulders of the men. She said: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ascended the pulpit, praised Allah and extolled Him, and then said: "Listen, your brother Tamim al-Dari has told me about some of his cousins who sailed on the sea, and the wind carried them off until it forced them to take refuge on one of the islands of the sea. They went out to ask about the way, and they met a creature among the creatures of Allah, bigger than anything they had seen before; there was nothing on it of what the children of Adam weave, and hair covered it. They said: We asked it about the way, and it said: If you want to ask about the way from someone who will tell you and who longs to hear your talk, then go to this monastery. We said: Tell us, what are you? She said: I am al-Dassasah. So we knew that she was a woman. Then we went to the monastery and entered it, and there was a creature bigger than any we had ever seen; from his collarbones to his ankles he was filled with iron, and his eye was blotted out. We asked him about the way, and he said: I will not tell you anything until you tell me what I ask you. We said: Ask whatever you wish. He said: Tell me about the Prophet of the Arabs: has he appeared? We said: Yes. He said: To what does he call? So we told him. He said: How quickly do the people come to what he calls them to? We said: Quickly. He said: That is better for them. He said: Tell me about the lake of Tiberias: what is its state? We said: It is overflowing. He said: Tell me about the spring of Zughar. We said: It is overflowing. He said: Ask whatever you wish. We said to him: What are you? He said: I am the Dajjal. By the One in whose hand my soul is, no land of Allah's earth will remain without my treading upon it with these two feet of mine, except Taybah." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is Taybah", meaning Madinah.

He said: Can you guide me to a man who will narrate to me a hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? Then he took me to Fatimah bint Qays (may Allah be pleased with her), and she said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood on the pulpit, and the people heard that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was standing on the pulpit, so the people came running, and I was among those who came to him (peace and blessings be upon him). I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Tamim al-Dari has told me that some of his cousins sailed on the sea in their ship for trade, and the wind drove them to an island. They said: (Give us) news. It said: The news is with the master of this monastery, and I am al-Jassas. So they went to the monastery, and there was a man weighed down with iron. He asked them where they were from, and they told him. He said: What has become of the Prophet of the Arabs; has he come out? They said: Yes. He said: Is he followed by the lowly people or by the nobles? They said: He is followed by the simple (ordinary) people. He said: Are they increasing or decreasing? They said: They are increasing. He said: Does anyone who has come to him turn back? They said: No. He said: That is better for them. What is the state of the lake of Tiberias; is there water in it? They said: Yes.
