Al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Fatimah bint Qays (may Allah be pleased with her) how her affair had gone. She said: My husband gave me three divorces all at once, so I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "My in-laws claim that I am entitled to neither housing nor maintenance." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They have spoken the truth. Go and spend your waiting period in the house of Ibn Umm Maktum." He was blind. Fatimah said: Then Abu al-Jahm bin Hudhayfah, and after him Mu'awiyah, proposed to her after her waiting period was over, and she consulted the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "As for Abu Jahm, he beats women a great deal; and as for Mu'awiyah, he is destitute (that is, penniless) and owns nothing. But why do you not consider Usamah?" I said: "Shall I marry Usamah?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, marry Usamah."
