Amir al-Sha'bi said: Fatimah bint Qays (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated to me; she was married to Abu Hafs bin Amr, or Amr bin Hafs. She came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) concerning maintenance and housing, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "Listen, O daughter of Qays!" He gestured with his hand and spread it over part of his face, as if he were screening himself from her, and as if he were saying: "Be quiet. A woman is owed maintenance by her husband only as long as he still has the right to take her back; if he no longer has that right, she is entitled to neither maintenance nor housing. Go to so-and-so (or he said: Umm Sharik) and spend your waiting period at her house." Then he said: "No, she is a woman with whom people gather (or he said: at whose house people sit and talk). Spend your waiting period in the house of Ibn Umm Maktum."
