Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) encamped at al-Juhfah. Then he turned towards the people, and he (peace and blessings be upon him), after praising and extolling Allah Almighty, said: "Every prophet I have found had half the lifespan of the prophet before him, and soon I will be called and I will have to go. So what do you say? The people said: You have given sincere counsel. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Do you not bear witness that there is no god but Allah, that Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger, that Paradise is true and that Hell is true? The people said: We bear witness to this. The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his blessed hand, placed it on his chest and said: I bear witness along with you. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Do you not hear? The people said: Yes indeed! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will be your forerunner at the Pond, and you will come to me at the Pond. Its width is as great as the distance between San'a' and Busra. At it there are cups made of silver, as many as the stars of the sky. So consider how you will deal with the two things after me. A caller called out: O Messenger of Allah! What is meant by the two things? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The Book of Allah, one end of which is in the hand of Allah and the other end in your hands; hold fast to it and you will not go astray. And the other is my kinsfolk. The Subtle, the All-Aware has informed me that these two will not separate from each other until they both come to me at the Pond, and I have asked my Lord for this for the two of them. So do not try to go ahead of them, or you will be ruined; do not fall short regarding them, or you will be ruined; and do not try to teach them, for they know more than you." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) by the hand and said: "Whoever I am closer to than his own self, Ali too is his wali (patron). O Allah! Love whoever loves him, and be the enemy of whoever is his enemy."

There, at his command, the ground beneath the trees was swept. Then he stood up and said: It seems as if I will be called and I will have to go. At the end of this narration are these words: I asked Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him): Did you yourself hear this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: Everyone who was present at that place at that time was seeing the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with his own two eyes and hearing the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with his own two ears. Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin Asid al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was returning from the Farewell Hajj, he instructed his Companions not to go beneath some scattered trees and not to encamp under them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a message to those people and ordered: Get up and clean beneath these trees. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to those trees and prayed there. Then he stood up and said: "O people! The Subtle, the All-Aware has informed me that every prophet whom He sent into the world had half the lifespan of the prophet before him. I think that soon my call will come and I will have to go. I will be called to account and you too will be called to account; so what will you say? The people said: We will bear witness that you conveyed the message, strove to the utmost and gave sincere counsel; may Allah Almighty grant you the best reward. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Do you not bear witness that there is no god but Allah, that Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger, that Paradise is true, that Hell is true, that death is true, that being raised again after death is true, that the Hour is coming and there is no doubt about it, and that Allah Almighty will raise again those who are in the graves? The people replied: Yes, we bear witness to this. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Allah! Be witness! Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O people! Indeed Allah Almighty is my mawla (patron), and I am the mawla of the believers, and I am closer to them than their own selves. So whoever I am the mawla of, this one too is his mawla. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) meant Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed:) "O Allah! Love whoever loves him, and be the enemy of whoever is his enemy." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O people! I will be your forerunner, and you will come to me at the Pond. It is a Pond wider than the distance from Busra to San'a', and at it there are cups made of silver, as many as the stars. The greater of them is the Book of Allah, one end of which is in the hand of Allah and the other end in your hands; hold fast to it and you will not go astray, and do not alter it. (And the other thing) is my 'itrah (close kin), my Ahl al-Bayt. The Subtle, the All-Aware has informed me that these two will not separate from each other until they both come to me at the Pond."
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Zayd bin al-Hasan al-Anmati; Abu Hatim says: He is munkar al-hadith (his narrations are rejected), while Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah (trustworthy). The remaining narrators of one of its two chains are thiqat (trustworthy).

Ali bin Ali al-Hilali relates from his father: "I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) during the illness at the end of which he passed away. Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) was at the head of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator says: She began to weep until her voice rose. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his gaze, looked at her and said: My beloved Fatimah! Why are you weeping? She said: I fear being left helpless after you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O my beloved! Do you not know that Allah Almighty looked upon the earth and chose your father from among them and sent him with His message; then He looked once more and chose your husband from among the people of the earth, and He revealed to me that I should marry you to him. O Fatimah! We, the Ahl al-Bayt, are people to whom Allah Almighty has given seven distinctions that were not given to anyone before us and will not be given to anyone after us. I am the one who seals the line of prophets, the most honoured of the prophets before Allah Almighty, and the most beloved of creation to Allah Almighty, and I am your father. My wasi (appointed successor) is the best of all awsiya' and the most beloved of them to Allah Almighty, and he is your husband. Our martyr is the best of all martyrs and the most beloved of all martyrs to Allah Almighty, and he is your paternal uncle, Sayyiduna Hamzah bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him), who is also your husband's paternal uncle. Among us is one who has two green wings; he flies with the angels in Paradise wherever he wishes, and he is your father's paternal cousin and your husband's brother. Among us are the two 'sibt' (grandsons) of this Ummah, and they are your two sons, Hasan and Husayn. They are the leaders of the youth of the people of Paradise, and their father is better than both of them. By the One who sent me with the truth! O Fatimah! By the One who sent me with the truth, from the descendants of these two will come the Mahdi of this Ummah, at a time when killing and bloodshed have become widespread in the world, tribulations have appeared, roads have been cut off, and people are attacking one another. At that time no elder will show mercy to a younger one, and no younger one will show respect to an elder. At that time Allah Almighty will send the Mahdi from their descendants, who will conquer the fortresses of misguidance and open sealed hearts. In the last age he will establish the religion just as I established it in the first age, and he will fill the world with justice just as it was previously filled with oppression. O Fatimah! Do not grieve and do not weep, for Allah Almighty is kinder and more merciful to you than I am, and that is because of the place you hold in my heart. Allah Almighty has married you to a man who is the most honoured of your household in lineage, the most esteemed in rank, the most merciful to the subjects, the one who judges most excellently with fairness, and the one with the greatest insight into judicial decisions. I have asked my Lord that, of my Ahl al-Bayt, you be the first to join me." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) lived only seventy-five days after him, until Allah Almighty joined her to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as well.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, al-Haytham bin Habib; Abu Hatim says: He is munkar al-hadith (his narrations are rejected), and he has been accused regarding this hadith.

Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in my house when the servant said: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) are at the door (or: are coming). Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Get up and move a little away from my Ahl al-Bayt for me! Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I moved and sat to one side in the house. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) came in, and with them were their children, Hasan and Husayn, who were both small children. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took the two children, sat them in his lap and kissed them both. He embraced Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) on one side, and with the other hand embraced Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) and kissed her; he also kissed Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Then he spread a black cloak over them and said: "O Allah! To You we shall come, not to the Fire: I and my Ahl al-Bayt." Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I said: O Messenger of Allah! Me too? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You too.

Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) brought them along, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spread over them a cloak that was beneath me; it was a cloak made in Khaybar which we had received from Khaybar. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Allah! Shaddad Abu Ammar narrates: I came to Sayyiduna Wathilah bin al-Asqa' (may Allah be pleased with him), and some people were with him. Those people mentioned Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) (and criticised him). When those people got up and left, he said: Shall I tell you what I saw from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? I replied: Yes. He said: I came to Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) and asked her about Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). She said: He has gone with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Hasan and Husayn are with him. I waited for Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived, with Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) with him; he was holding each of them by one hand. He came into the house, and he came close to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her). He sat Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) and Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), each of them, on a thigh. Then he spread his garment (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) his cloak over them. Then he recited this verse: "O Ahl al-Bayt! Allah Almighty only intends to remove impurity from you and to purify you thoroughly." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: O Allah! These are my Ahl al-Bayt, and my Ahl al-Bayt have the greater right.
Ahmad recorded it, and Abu Ya'la recorded it in abridged form, adding the words: "To You! Not to the Fire."

It is also narrated from Abu Ammar; he said: I was sitting with Sayyiduna Wathilah bin al-Asqa' (may Allah be pleased with him) when some people mentioned Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and spoke ill of him. When those people got up and left, Sayyiduna Wathilah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will tell you about the person whom these people were speaking ill of. One day I was present with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) came. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) put his cloak over them and then said: "O Allah! These are my Ahl al-Bayt (household), so remove impurity from them and purify them thoroughly." I said: O Messenger of Allah! Am I also included among them? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You too. The narrator said: By Allah! In my view, this is my most reliable deed.

Sayyiduna Subayh (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I was at the door of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and they sat down in a corner. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out and said: You are upon goodness. The narrator said: At that time the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had a Khaybari cloak on him; he put that cloak over them and said: "I will fight against whoever fights against you, and I will be at peace with whoever is at peace with you."

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to our house while I was asleep. Hasan and Husayn asked for something to drink, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) got up and went to our goat, which gave little milk. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) milked it, and it gave plenty. Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) moved him aside. Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: It seems as though, of the two, this one is dearer to you, O Messenger of Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No, rather he asked for a drink before him. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I, you, these two (children) and this sleeping man (that is, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him)) will be in one place on the Day of Resurrection.
Ahmad and al-Bazzar recorded it, except that his wording is: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to our house while I, Hasan and Husayn were sleeping under one quilt. Hasan asked for something to drink. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) got up and went to a vessel of ours; he poured water from it into a cup and brought it. Meanwhile Husayn also got up, and he gestured with his hand (or: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured with his hand to wait for now). Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: It seems as though, of the two, this one is dearer to you, O Messenger of Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: He asked first. Indeed, I, you, these two (children) and this sleeping man will be in one place on the Day of Resurrection.
Al-Tabarani recorded something similar, except that his wording is: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) got up and went to our waterskin and began squeezing it into the cup, and he said: These two are of the same rank in my sight.
Abu Ya'la recorded it in abridged form. Ahmad's chain contains a narrator, Qays bin al-Rabi', about whom there is disagreement, and the rest of Ahmad's narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Imam Abu Ja'far Muhammad bin Ali (that is, Imam al-Baqir (may Allah have mercy on him)) narrated: We said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him): Narrate to us a hadith that you heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself, or something you saw from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and do not narrate to us any hadith on the authority of anyone other than yourself, even if that other person is trustworthy.
