Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 14960

Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) conquered Makkah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) went towards Ta'if. He (peace and blessings be upon him) kept it under siege for seventeen or perhaps nineteen days. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up to deliver a sermon. He (peace and blessings be upon him) praised and extolled Allah Almighty and then said: "I urge you to treat my 'itrah (close kin) well. Your meeting place with me is the Pond. By the One in whose hand is my soul, you will surely establish the prayer and you will surely pay the zakah, or else I will send to you a man from among myself (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) I will send to you a man who is like myself, and he will strike your necks." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) by the hand and said: And it will be this one.
Al-Bazzar recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Talhah bin Jabr, who is da'if (weak).
