Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 14966

Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin Asid al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was returning from the Farewell Hajj, he instructed his Companions not to go beneath some scattered trees and not to encamp under them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a message to those people and ordered: Get up and clean beneath these trees. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to those trees and prayed there. Then he stood up and said: "O people! The Subtle, the All-Aware has informed me that every prophet whom He sent into the world had half the lifespan of the prophet before him. I think that soon my call will come and I will have to go. I will be called to account and you too will be called to account; so what will you say? The people said: We will bear witness that you conveyed the message, strove to the utmost and gave sincere counsel; may Allah Almighty grant you the best reward. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Do you not bear witness that there is no god but Allah, that Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger, that Paradise is true, that Hell is true, that death is true, that being raised again after death is true, that the Hour is coming and there is no doubt about it, and that Allah Almighty will raise again those who are in the graves? The people replied: Yes, we bear witness to this. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Allah! Be witness! Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O people! Indeed Allah Almighty is my mawla (patron), and I am the mawla of the believers, and I am closer to them than their own selves. So whoever I am the mawla of, this one too is his mawla. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) meant Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed:) "O Allah! Love whoever loves him, and be the enemy of whoever is his enemy." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O people! I will be your forerunner, and you will come to me at the Pond. It is a Pond wider than the distance from Busra to San'a', and at it there are cups made of silver, as many as the stars. When you come to me at the Pond, I will ask you about two things, so you will have to consider how you dealt with these two things after me. The greater of them is the Book of Allah, one end of which is in the hand of Allah and the other end in your hands; hold fast to it and you will not go astray, and do not alter it. (And the other thing) is my 'itrah (close kin), my Ahl al-Bayt. The Subtle, the All-Aware has informed me that these two will not separate from each other until they both come to me at the Pond."
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Zayd bin al-Hasan al-Anmati; Abu Hatim says: He is munkar al-hadith (his narrations are rejected), while Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah (trustworthy). The remaining narrators of one of its two chains are thiqat (trustworthy).
