Ali bin Ali al-Hilali relates from his father: "I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) during the illness at the end of which he passed away. Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) was at the head of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator says: She began to weep until her voice rose. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his gaze, looked at her and said: My beloved Fatimah! Why are you weeping? She said: I fear being left helpless after you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O my beloved! Do you not know that Allah Almighty looked upon the earth and chose your father from among them and sent him with His message; then He looked once more and chose your husband from among the people of the earth, and He revealed to me that I should marry you to him. O Fatimah! We, the Ahl al-Bayt, are people to whom Allah Almighty has given seven distinctions that were not given to anyone before us and will not be given to anyone after us. I am the one who seals the line of prophets, the most honoured of the prophets before Allah Almighty, and the most beloved of creation to Allah Almighty, and I am your father. My wasi (appointed successor) is the best of all awsiya' and the most beloved of them to Allah Almighty, and he is your husband. Our martyr is the best of all martyrs and the most beloved of all martyrs to Allah Almighty, and he is your paternal uncle, Sayyiduna Hamzah bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him), who is also your husband's paternal uncle. Among us is one who has two green wings; he flies with the angels in Paradise wherever he wishes, and he is your father's paternal cousin and your husband's brother. Among us are the two 'sibt' (grandsons) of this Ummah, and they are your two sons, Hasan and Husayn. They are the leaders of the youth of the people of Paradise, and their father is better than both of them. By the One who sent me with the truth! O Fatimah! By the One who sent me with the truth, from the descendants of these two will come the Mahdi of this Ummah, at a time when killing and bloodshed have become widespread in the world, tribulations have appeared, roads have been cut off, and people are attacking one another. At that time no elder will show mercy to a younger one, and no younger one will show respect to an elder. At that time Allah Almighty will send the Mahdi from their descendants, who will conquer the fortresses of misguidance and open sealed hearts. In the last age he will establish the religion just as I established it in the first age, and he will fill the world with justice just as it was previously filled with oppression. O Fatimah! Do not grieve and do not weep, for Allah Almighty is kinder and more merciful to you than I am, and that is because of the place you hold in my heart. Allah Almighty has married you to a man who is the most honoured of your household in lineage, the most esteemed in rank, the most merciful to the subjects, the one who judges most excellently with fairness, and the one with the greatest insight into judicial decisions. I have asked my Lord that, of my Ahl al-Bayt, you be the first to join me." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) lived only seventy-five days after him, until Allah Almighty joined her to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as well.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, al-Haytham bin Habib; Abu Hatim says: He is munkar al-hadith (his narrations are rejected), and he has been accused regarding this hadith.
