Reports on al-Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him)

Sayyidah Sawdah bint Musarrih (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I was among the women who were present with Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) at the time of her giving birth. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us and asked: "How is she?" I said: "O Messenger of Allah, she is in distress." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When she gives birth to the child, you are not to do anything regarding the child before me." The narrator says: When Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) gave birth to the child, they cut its umbilical cord and wrapped it in a yellow cloth. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came and asked: "What happened?" I said: "She has given birth to the child; I have cut its umbilical cord and wrapped it in a cloth." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Did you disobey me?" I said: "I seek refuge in Allah from that disobedience, and I also seek refuge from the anger of His Messenger." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring the child to me." I brought him to him, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) removed the yellow cloth from him and wrapped him in a white cloth. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) put his saliva into the child's mouth and gave him tahnik with his saliva. Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O Ali, what have you named him?" He said: "I have named him Ja'far." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No! Rather, this is Hasan, and after him will be Husayn, and you are Abu Hasan."

In one narration the words are: "You are Abu Hasan al-Khayr."
Tabarani recorded it with two chains; one of them contains Urwah bin Fayruz and Umar bin Umayr, and I do not know either of them. The remaining narrators of this report have been declared trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I proposed marriage to the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her). The narrator says: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) sold a coat of mail he had and sold some of his belongings, and he obtained four hundred and eighty dirhams. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to spend two thirds of the money on perfume and use one third for clothes. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rinsed his mouth into a jar of water and ordered them to bathe with that water. The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she was not to nurse the child before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came. The narrator says: But Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) had nursed Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came. This did not happen with Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him); the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) put something into his mouth, and we do not know what it was. So he was the more knowledgeable of the two.
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was offering prayer. When he went into prostration, Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) climbed onto his neck and his back. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rose gently so that the child would not fall. The people said: "O Messenger of Allah, we saw you do something with Hasan that we have not seen you do with anyone." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is my flower from this world. This son of mine will be a leader, and Allah Almighty will soon bring about reconciliation through him between two great groups."

In one narration the words are: He climbed onto the back of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he did this more than once.
Ahmad, al-Bazzar and Tabarani recorded it. The narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Mubarak bin Fadalah, and he is thiqah (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in prostration. Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) (who was a child) climbed onto the back of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) held him with his hand until he stood up. When he went into bowing (ruku'), he again climbed onto his back. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, he let him go, and he went away.
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and there is disagreement about its narrators.

Sayyiduna Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in prostration. Meanwhile Sayyiduna Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) came and climbed onto his back. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not put him down until he himself came down. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would spread his legs apart for him, and he would go in from one side and come out from the other side.
Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Ali bin Abis, who is da'if (weak).

Al-Bahi narrates: I said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both): "Tell me about the person who most closely resembled the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." He replied: "Sayyiduna Imam Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both). He most closely resembled the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and was the most beloved of people to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He would come while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in prostration and climb onto the back of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would not rise until he moved aside. Once he came and went in under the belly of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (that is, between his legs), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spread his legs apart for him, so he came out from the other side."
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains Ali bin Abis, who is da'if (weak).

Ibn Abi Mulaykah narrates: Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) was lifting Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) and saying: "This son of mine resembles the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); he does not resemble Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him)."
Ahmad recorded it, and
it is mursal; its chain contains Zam'ah bin Salih, who is layyin (soft, weak).

Kulayb bin Shihab narrates: Sayyiduna Imam Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) was mentioned in the presence of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he said: "He resembled the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)."
Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy), except that I am not aware of Kulayb having heard from any of the Companions.

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: From the head down to the neck, the one among people who most resembles the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is "Hasan".
Tabarani recorded it, and its chain is good (jayyid).

Sayyiduna Zuhayr bin al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once Sayyiduna Imam Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) was delivering a sermon; this was after the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Meanwhile a man from the tribe of Azd stood up, a tall man of brown complexion, and said: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) place this man in his lap and then say: "Whoever loves me should love him too, and let the one who is present convey this to those who are absent." (Then that man said:) Had it not been for this emphatic instruction of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I would not have narrated this hadith to you.
Ahmad recorded it, and its chain contains a narrator whom I do not know.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: These two ears of mine heard it and these two eyes of mine saw it: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was holding Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him), or perhaps Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), with both hands, and the child's two feet were on the feet of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying: "O little one, O little one, climb up, O small-eyed one." So the child climbed up until he placed his feet on the chest of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Open your mouth." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kissed him, and then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, whoever loves him, I too will love him."
Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Abu Muzarrid, and I have not found anyone who declared him trustworthy. The remaining narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him), held him close to himself, and then said: "O Allah, indeed this is my son, so love him, and love whoever loves him."
Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Uthman bin Abi al-Kannat, and there is weakness in him.

Sayyiduna Sa'id bin Zayd bin Nufayl (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) embraced Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "O Allah, I love him, so love him."
Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Yazid bin Yuhannas, and he is thiqah (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said about Sayyiduna Imam Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both): "O Allah, I love him, so love him, and love whoever loves him." (Allamah Haythami says:) I say:
This narration is mentioned in the Sahih, but without these words: "and love whoever loves him."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and al-Bazzar and Abu Ya'la also recorded it; the narrators of al-Kabir are the narrators of the Sahih.

Raja' bin Rabi'ah narrates: I was sitting in Madinah in the Prophet's Mosque in a circle that included Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him). Meanwhile Sayyiduna Imam Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by and gave the greeting of peace. The people returned his greeting, but Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) remained silent. When he had gone, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Wa alaykas-salamu wa rahmatullah (And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah)." Then he said: "This man is the most beloved of the people of the earth to the people of the heavens. By Allah, I have not spoken with him since the battle of Siffin." Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Why do you not go to him and offer him your apology?" Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Very well." The narrator says: Then they got up. Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) entered the house of Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him); he asked permission and Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) gave him permission. Then he asked permission for Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him), and he too came in. Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him): "Tell (us) what you told us when Hasan passed by." He said: "Very well, I will tell you: he is the most beloved of the people of the earth to the people of the heavens." Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Since you know that I am the most beloved of the people of the earth to the people of the heavens, why then did you fight us at Siffin (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) or join it and increase the numbers (of our opponents)?" Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah, I neither increased the numbers of the people nor struck with a sword alongside them; I was only present with my father." Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Do you not know that there is no obedience to a creature in disobedience to Allah Almighty?" Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Yes! In the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I used to keep voluntary fasts continuously. My father complained about me to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), saying: 'O Messenger of Allah, Abdullah bin Amr fasts during the day and keeps praying voluntary prayers at night.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Keep voluntary fasts and also leave them off; (at night) sleep and also pray voluntary prayers, for I pray voluntary prayers and also sleep, and I keep voluntary fasts and also leave them off.' And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'O Abdullah, obey your father.' So when my father set out on the occasion of the battle of Siffin, I too set out with him."
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Hashim bin al-Barid, and he is thiqah (trustworthy). (Allamah Haythami says:) I say: Another chain of this report will also come in the chapter on the virtues of Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him).

Umayr bin Ishaq narrates: I saw Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) meet Sayyiduna Imam Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he said to Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him): "Uncover your stomach at the place where I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kiss." Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) uncovered his stomach, and Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) also kissed it there.

In one narration the words are: Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) kissed his navel.
Ahmad and Tabarani recorded it, except that he (Tabarani) reported these words: Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) uncovered his stomach, and Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) placed his hand on his navel. The narrators of both reports are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Umayr bin Ishaq, and he is thiqah (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sucking his tongue (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) his lip. The narrator says: This refers to Sayyiduna Imam Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). (Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said:) No lip or tongue that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has sucked will be punished.
Ahmad recorded it, and apart from the narrator Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Awf, all the narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih, and that narrator too is thiqah (trustworthy).

Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Awf narrates: Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) and Abu al-A'war al-Sulami said to Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him): "Hasan bin Ali is a weak man (in speech)." Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Do not say that, for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) put his saliva into his mouth, and one into whose mouth the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has put his saliva cannot be weak in speech." Sayyiduna Imam Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "O Amr, as for you, two men disputed over you, so consider which of them is your father. And O Abu al-A'war, as for you, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the tribes of Ri'l and Dhakwan and Amr bin Sufyan."
Tabarani recorded it from his teacher Muhammad bin Awn al-Sirafi, and I do not know him. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Al-Maqburi narrates: We were with Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) when Sayyiduna Imam Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) came and gave the greeting of peace. Those present returned his greeting and he went on his way. Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) was with us but did not notice. He was told that Imam Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) had given the greeting of peace, so Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) went after him and said: "And upon you be peace, O my master!" Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked: "You were saying, 'O my master'?" Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I bear witness that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'He (that is, he said this about Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him)) is a leader.'"
Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said about Sayyiduna Imam Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both): "This son of mine is a leader, and Allah Almighty will bring about reconciliation through him between two great groups of the Muslims."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and al-Bazzar also recorded it. Its chain contains Abd al-Rahman bin Maghra', whom more than one person declared trustworthy, and there is weakness in him. The remaining narrators of al-Bazzar are the narrators of the Sahih.

Hasan narrates (the narrator says: I think he narrated it from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) as a marfu' report): (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) "This son of mine is a leader", meaning that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this about Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrator says: He (that is, Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him)) resembled the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); he said this or some other words like it.
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Hasan is the leader of the youth of the people of Paradise."
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains Jabir al-Ju'fi, who is da'if (weak).

Raqabah bin Masqalah narrates: When the final moments of Sayyiduna Imam Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) came, he said: "Take me out to the open desert so that I may reflect and look at the signs in the heavens." When he was taken out, he said: "O Allah, I hope for reward from You for (the loss of) my own self, for it is the dearest of selves to me." And among what Allah Almighty did for him was that he sought reward from Allah for (the loss of) his own self.
Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except that, as far as I know, the narrator Raqabah did not hear from Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him); according to one view he heard from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him).

Shurahbil narrates: I was with Sayyiduna Imam Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both). They brought out the bier (that is, the bier of the deceased) of Sayyiduna Imam Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both). He intended to have him buried beside the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but he also feared that the Banu Umayyah would not let him do so. When they reached the mosque with his body, the Banu Umayyah stood up (in opposition). Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: "I heard him (that is, Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him)) say: 'If the people prevent it, then bury me beside my mother.'"
Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Shurahbil bin Sa'd, who is da'if (weak).

Maymun bin Mihran narrates: When Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) lost his sight, he used to say to the person who led him: "When you take me in to Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), bring me right up to his seat and then let go of my hand, so that Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) does not gloat over my condition." One day he did just that, and Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to one of those sitting with him: "He is about to be grieved." When Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) sat with him on his seat, Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Abu Abbas, may Allah Almighty reward you concerning Sayyiduna Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him)!" Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) asked: "Has he passed away?" Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Yes." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "May the mercy and good pleasure of Allah Almighty descend upon him, and may Allah Almighty join him with his righteous predecessors. By Allah, O Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), you will not fill his grave, nor will you eat his provision, nor will you live forever after him. We were struck by a calamity even greater than this, and that was the passing of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), yet even after that Allah Almighty did not abandon us to disgrace."
Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Ya'qub bin Muhammad al-Zuhri, who has been declared trustworthy, while a group declared him da'if (weak). The remaining narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.

Al-Haytham bin Adi narrates: Sayyiduna Imam Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) passed away in the year 44 AH. The narrator says: Al-Haytham bin Adi stated it thus, but the contrary has also been reported.

Abu Nu'aym narrates: In that year, that is, 58 AH, Sayyiduna Imam Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away.

Abu Bakr bin Hafs narrates: Sayyiduna Imam Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away in 48 AH.

It is reported from him that he said: Sayyiduna Imam Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away after ten years of the rule of Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) had passed.

Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah narrates: Sayyiduna Imam Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) passed away in 48 AH.

Yahya bin Bukayr narrates: Sayyiduna Imam Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) passed away in 49 AH, and Sayyiduna Sa'id bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) led his funeral prayer. He passed away in Madinah, at the age of forty-six or forty-seven, and his kunyah was Abu Muhammad.

Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Numayr narrates: Sayyiduna Imam Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) passed away at the age of forty-seven. His kunyah was Abu Muhammad. (Allamah Haythami says:) I say: The chains of all the reports about his death are authentic up to those who stated them.
