Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "From the time Allah Almighty created Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him) until the Hour is established, Allah Almighty has not sent down to the earth any trial greater than the trial of the Dajjal. And I am about to say something about the Dajjal that no prophet before me has said: he will be a wheat-complexioned man with curly hair, his left eye will be defective, and there will be a thick piece of flesh over his eyes. He will cure the one born blind and the one with leprosy (i.e. vitiligo), and he will say: 'I am your Lord.' Whoever says: 'My Lord is Allah Almighty,' no trial will befall him; and whoever says: 'You are my Lord,' that person will fall into trial. He will remain among you for as long as Allah Almighty wills. Then Sayyiduna Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon him) will descend, confirming the religion of Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). He will descend following the religion of Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) as a rightly guided imam and a just ruler, and he will kill the Dajjal." Hasan al-Basri used to say: We think that this will be near the Hour.

When his anger subsided, I said: "O Abu Abdullah, what did you pray against this man?" He will come from the direction of the east and will call (people), and he will be followed. He will raise a banner for the people, then fight the people and prevail over them. He will keep doing this until he comes to Kufah. Then he will make the religion of Allah manifest (i.e. present himself as its follower) and act upon it, so he will be followed and people will go after him in this. Then after that he will say: 'I am a prophet.' At that point every person of understanding will be alarmed and will separate from him. After that he will remain in that state until he says: 'I am Allah.' Then one of his eyes will be ruined and his ear will be cut off, and 'Kafir' (disbeliever) will be written between his two eyes, and this will not remain hidden from any Muslim. Every one of the creation in whose heart there is faith equal to a mustard seed will separate from him. The companions of the Dajjal and the men of his army will be Magians, Jews and Christians, and non-Arabs from among the polytheists. Then the Dajjal will summon a man while the people are watching; an order will be given about him and he will be killed. Then his limbs will be cut off, each limb cut off separately, and his limbs will be in pieces before the people's eyes. Then the Dajjal will gather them and strike them with his staff, and the man will stand up. Then the Dajjal will say: 'I am that Allah who gives life, and I am that Allah, and I give death.' Tha'labah bin Abbad al-Abdi, who was from the people of Basrah, narrates: One day I was present at a sermon of Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundab (may Allah be pleased with him). In his sermon he mentioned a hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The author says: I say: after this he narrated the hadith about the solar eclipse, in which further on come these words: "Then the sun became clear while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting after the second rak'ah." Here a narrator named Zuhayr narrated these words: I think the narration has these words: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said the salam, then he praised and extolled Allah Almighty and bore witness that he is the servant of Allah and His Messenger. Then he said: "O people, I ask you by Allah: if you know that I have fallen short in any way in conveying the commands of my Lord, then tell me about it." The narrator says: Some people stood up and said: "We bear witness that you have conveyed the message of your Lord, you have been sincere to your nation, and you have fulfilled the duty that was upon you." Then those people fell silent. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "To proceed: some people claim that the eclipse of the sun, the eclipse of the moon, or the falling of the stars happens because of the death of great people on the earth. Those people think wrongly. These are some of the signs of Allah, by which Allah Almighty draws the attention of His servants and looks to see which of them repents. By Allah! While I was standing here performing the prayer, I saw the things you will face in your worldly affairs and in your Hereafter. By Allah! The Hour will not be established until thirty false claimants to prophethood have emerged, the last of whom will be the one-eyed Dajjal, whose left eye will be wiped out; it will be like the eye of Abu Tahya." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this about an old man of the Ansar who was at that time between the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the chamber of Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When he emerges, he will claim that he is Allah. Whoever believes in him, affirms him and follows him, none of the good deeds he did before will benefit him; and whoever rejects him and denies him will not be punished for any deed he did before (here the narrator has a doubt about some words, but this is the meaning). He will soon appear and prevail over the whole face of the earth, except the Haram and Bayt al-Maqdis. At that time the believers will be besieged in Bayt al-Maqdis, then a severe earthquake will strike there, and then Allah Almighty will destroy the Dajjal, until the foundation of a wall or the root of a tree will call out and say: 'O believer,' or 'O Muslim! This is a Jew,' or 'This is a disbeliever; come and kill him' (all these doubts are from the narrators)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And this will not happen until you see matters over which you are distressed, and you ask one another whether your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned any of them to you; and it will not happen until mountains move from their places." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then after that will come the taking away (i.e. the world will come to an end)." The narrator says: Then once I was present at a sermon of Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him). He mentioned this hadith in that sermon, and he did not move a single word forward or backward from its place.
Ahmad recorded it, and al-Bazzar recorded part of it. In his narration he recorded these words: "Whoever holds fast to Allah (and His religion) and says: 'My Lord is Allah Almighty, who is Ever-Living and will not die,' there will be no punishment upon him; and whoever says to the Dajjal: 'You are my Lord,' will fall into trial." The narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih, except Tha'labah bin Ubadah, whom Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy).

When the time of Jumu'ah came, he instructed us and we performed the ritual bath (ghusl). Then he brought us perfume and we applied it. Then we came to the mosque and sat down. Then he told us that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The Muslims will have three cities: one city near the meeting place of the two seas, one city at al-Hirah, and one city in Syria. The people will be struck by alarm three times. The Dajjal will emerge among the people and will defeat those on the side of the east. The first city they will reach will be the city at the meeting place of the two seas, and its inhabitants will split into three parts: one group will say: 'Let us go to him and examine what he is'; one group will go and join the Bedouins; and one group will go to the neighbouring city. With the Dajjal will be seventy thousand people wearing green taylasan garments, and most of his followers will be Jews and women. Then he will come to the next city, and its inhabitants too will split into three groups: one group will say: 'Let us go to him and examine what he is'; one group will go to the Bedouins; and one group will go to the neighbouring city, which will be in the western part of Syria. At that time the Muslims will gather at the mountain pass called Afiq. Then they will send out their animals to graze, and their animals will be harmed (or those animals will die). This will weigh very heavily on them, and the Muslims will be struck by severe hunger and severe hardship, until one of them will split the string of his bow and eat it. While they are in this state, a caller will announce: 'O people! Help has come to you.' He will say this three times, and the people will say: 'This sounds like the voice of a man whose hunger is satisfied.' Then Sayyiduna Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon him) will descend; this will be near the time of the Fajr prayer. The leader of the Muslims will say to him: 'O Spirit of Allah! Please come forward and lead the prayer.' He will say: 'The people of this nation are leaders over one another.' So the leader of the Muslims will step forward and lead the prayer. When he has finished the prayer, Sayyiduna Isa (peace be upon him) will take his spear and set off towards the Dajjal. When the Dajjal sees him, he will begin to melt as lead melts. Then Sayyiduna Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon him) will place his spear on his chest and kill him, and the Dajjal's companions will be routed. At that time, whatever thing hides any one of them (the disbelievers), even if it is a tree, will say: 'O believer! Here is a disbeliever'; and if it is a stone, it will say: 'Here is a disbeliever.'"

We pressed him greatly about this, so he said: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood among us and said: "I am warning you about the Dajjal. His left eye will be missing. With him will be mountains of bread and rivers of water. His sign is that he will remain on the earth for forty days, and his dominion will reach every spring; however, he will not be able to come to four mosques: the Ka'bah, the Prophet's Mosque, al-Masjid al-Aqsa and the mosque of Tur. Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Dajjal will emerge at a time when religion has weakened and knowledge has departed. He will have forty nights, in which he will roam the whole earth. One day of those will be like a year, one day like a month, one day like a week, and the rest of the days will be like your ordinary days. He will have a donkey, the width between whose two ears will be forty cubits. He will say to the people: 'I am your Lord,' although he will be one-eyed, and your Lord is not one-eyed. Between his two eyes will be written 'Kafir', that is, K-F-R, spelled out in letters, which every believer, literate or illiterate, will be able to read. He will come to every water and watering place, except that he will not come to Madinah and Makkah, because Allah Almighty has made these two cities forbidden to him, and angels are standing at the gates of these cities. With the Dajjal will be mountains of bread, and the people at that time will be suffering starvation, except for those who follow him. With the Dajjal will be two rivers, and I know more about them than the Dajjal does: a river about which he will say: 'This is Paradise,' and a river about which he will say: 'This is Hell.' Whoever enters the one he calls Paradise, it will in reality be Hell; and whoever enters the one he has called Hell, it will in reality be Paradise." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Devils will be sent with him who will talk with people, and with them will be a great trial. He will command the sky and it will send down rain, which the people will see. Then he will say to the people: 'O people! Can anyone but the Lord do this?'" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The people will flee to Jabal al-Dukhan in Syria, and he will besiege them. Their siege will become severe, and those people will be struck by severe hunger. Then Sayyiduna Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon him) will descend and will call out loudly, saying: 'O people! What is preventing you from going out against this wicked great liar?' The people will say: 'This man is a jinn.' Then those people will go, and there will be Sayyiduna Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon him). Then the prayer will be established, and it will be said to him: 'O Spirit of Allah! Come forward.' He will say: 'Your imam should come forward; let that imam lead you in prayer.' When they have performed the morning prayer, he will go out towards him." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the great liar sees him, he will begin to dissolve just as salt dissolves in water. Sayyiduna Isa (peace be upon him) will walk to him and kill him, until even the trees and stones will call out: 'This is a Jew (hiding behind me),' and he will kill every one of his followers." Mentioning the Dajjal, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Before him there will be three years of drought. During them, (in the first year) the sky will withhold a third of its rain and the earth will withhold a third of its produce. Then the second time, the sky will withhold two thirds of its rain and the earth two thirds of its produce. And the third time, the sky will withhold all of its rain and the earth all of its produce. At that time no animal with hooves or with molars will remain; they will (all) perish. And among the most severe parts of his trial will be that he will come to a Bedouin and say: 'What do you think: if I bring your camel back to life for you, will you not know that I am your Lord?' The Bedouin will say: 'Yes.' Then devils will appear before that man in the likeness of his camel, with better udders than before and a bigger hump than before." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man will come whose father or brother has died, and the Dajjal will say: 'If I bring your father back to life for you, or bring your brother back to life for you, will you not know that I am your Lord?' The man will reply: 'Yes.' Then those devils will appear before him in the likeness of his father or in the likeness of his brother." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out for some need. When he returned, the female narrator says: the people were troubled and saddened by what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had told them. The female narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of the doorframe and said: "O Asma, what has happened?" The female narrator says: I said: "O Messenger of Allah! By mentioning the Dajjal you have troubled us." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If he emerges while I am alive, I will be his opponent; otherwise my Lord will take my place for every believer." Sayyidah Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "O Messenger of Allah! By Allah, we knead our dough, and before we have baked the bread we become hungry; so what will be the condition of the believers at that time?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By that (i.e. the remembrance of Allah) by which the angels live. The Dajjal will be one-eyed, and Allah Almighty is not one-eyed. Between the Dajjal's two eyes will be written 'Kafir' (disbeliever), which every believer will be able to read, whether he is literate or not. Most of the Dajjal's followers will be Jews, women and Bedouins. You will see the sky as though it is sending down rain, when no rain is falling, and you will see the earth as though it is growing vegetation, when it is not growing vegetation. The Dajjal will say to the Bedouins: 'What do you want from me? Have I not sent down torrential rain upon you from the sky? Have I not brought your livestock back to life for you, so that they have become healthy and their milk has increased?' Then some devils will be sent with the Dajjal in the form of people's dead forefathers, brothers and acquaintances. One of them will come to his relative and say: 'Are you not so-and-so? Do you not recognize me? This is your Lord, so follow him.' The Dajjal will live for forty years, in which a year will be like a month, a month like a week, a week like a day, a day like an hour, and an hour like the burning of a palm frond in fire. He will reach every watering place except the two mosques." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) got up and began to perform ablution.
