Tha'labah bin Abbad al-Abdi, who was from the people of Basrah, narrates: One day I was present at a sermon of Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundab (may Allah be pleased with him). In his sermon he mentioned a hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The author says: I say: after this he narrated the hadith about the solar eclipse, in which further on come these words: "Then the sun became clear while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting after the second rak'ah." Here a narrator named Zuhayr narrated these words: I think the narration has these words: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said the salam, then he praised and extolled Allah Almighty and bore witness that he is the servant of Allah and His Messenger. Then he said: "O people, I ask you by Allah: if you know that I have fallen short in any way in conveying the commands of my Lord, then tell me about it." The narrator says: Some people stood up and said: "We bear witness that you have conveyed the message of your Lord, you have been sincere to your nation, and you have fulfilled the duty that was upon you." Then those people fell silent. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "To proceed: some people claim that the eclipse of the sun, the eclipse of the moon, or the falling of the stars happens because of the death of great people on the earth. Those people think wrongly. These are some of the signs of Allah, by which Allah Almighty draws the attention of His servants and looks to see which of them repents. By Allah! While I was standing here performing the prayer, I saw the things you will face in your worldly affairs and in your Hereafter. By Allah! The Hour will not be established until thirty false claimants to prophethood have emerged, the last of whom will be the one-eyed Dajjal, whose left eye will be wiped out; it will be like the eye of Abu Tahya." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this about an old man of the Ansar who was at that time between the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the chamber of Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When he emerges, he will claim that he is Allah. Whoever believes in him, affirms him and follows him, none of the good deeds he did before will benefit him; and whoever rejects him and denies him will not be punished for any deed he did before (here the narrator has a doubt about some words, but this is the meaning). He will soon appear and prevail over the whole face of the earth, except the Haram and Bayt al-Maqdis. At that time the believers will be besieged in Bayt al-Maqdis, then a severe earthquake will strike there, and then Allah Almighty will destroy the Dajjal, until the foundation of a wall or the root of a tree will call out and say: 'O believer,' or 'O Muslim! This is a Jew,' or 'This is a disbeliever; come and kill him' (all these doubts are from the narrators)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And this will not happen until you see matters over which you are distressed, and you ask one another whether your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned any of them to you; and it will not happen until mountains move from their places." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then after that will come the taking away (i.e. the world will come to an end)." The narrator says: Then once I was present at a sermon of Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him). He mentioned this hadith in that sermon, and he did not move a single word forward or backward from its place.
Ahmad recorded it, and al-Bazzar recorded part of it. In his narration he recorded these words: "Whoever holds fast to Allah (and His religion) and says: 'My Lord is Allah Almighty, who is Ever-Living and will not die,' there will be no punishment upon him; and whoever says to the Dajjal: 'You are my Lord,' will fall into trial." The narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih, except Tha'labah bin Ubadah, whom Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy).
