Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the occasion of the Battle of Badr, three men rode one camel. Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Lubabah (may Allah be pleased with him) were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When it was the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) turn (to walk), the two of them submitted: "We will walk in your place." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You two are not stronger than I am, and I am not less in need of the reward than you two."
Ahmad and al-Bazzar recorded it. He (al-Bazzar) recorded these words: When it was the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) turn, the two of them submitted: "Stay mounted; we will walk in your place." The rest of the narration is as before. Its chain contains a narrator, Asim bin Bahdalah, whose hadith is hasan (good). The remaining narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyidah Atikah bint Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I saw (in a dream) that a rider took a rock from Mount Abu Qubays and threw it towards the Black Stone. The rock hung (that is, was suspended), and then a fragment of it entered every single household of Quraysh; only in the quarter of Banu Zuhrah did it not enter. Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said (after hearing this dream): "Keep this dream hidden; do not mention it." Then Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) went out and met al-Walid bin Utbah bin Rabi'ah, and he mentioned this dream to him. Al-Walid mentioned this dream to his father, and so the matter spread. Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I went out to perform tawaf of the Ka'bah, and Abu Jahl was sitting among some men of Quraysh, talking about Atikah's dream. When Abu Jahl saw me, he said: "O Abu al-Fadl, when you have finished your tawaf, come over to us." When I finished the tawaf, I came and sat with them. Abu Jahl said: "O Banu Abd al-Muttalib, were you not content that your men claimed prophethood, that now the situation is that your women too have begun to claim prophethood? Atikah has related about her dream that he (the rider) said: 'March out within three days.' So we will wait for these three days. If what she says is true, it will come to pass, and if the three days pass and nothing of the sort appears, we will have a document written against you that you are the most lying household among the Arabs." Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: By Allah, at that time I had no recourse other than to deny this and reject that she (that is, Atikah) had seen anything. Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When evening came, a woman from among the daughters of Abd al-Muttalib came to me and said: "Are you content with this wicked man, that he spoke ill of your men and then spoke ill of your women too, while you kept listening and had no way of objecting? By Allah, had Hamzah been there, he would not have said what he said." I said: "By Allah, he did do that, and I had no way of objecting to it. By Allah, now I will go to him, and if he says such a thing again, I will answer him on your behalf." Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: On the third day after Atikah's dream I went, and I was angry that a matter had slipped from me of which I wished I had obtained something. Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: By Allah, I was heading towards him. He was a lean man, with a sharp face, a sharp tongue and sharp eyesight. When he came out towards the mosque (that is, the Sacred Mosque), he was leaning on something. I thought to myself: "What is the matter with him, may Allah curse him? Is he afraid of me, that I will revile him?" But in fact he had heard something that I had not heard. He had heard the voice of Damdam bin Zur'ah bin Amr al-Ghifari, who had cried out in the low-lying part of Makkah. He had cut his camel's nose, overturned his saddle and torn his shirt, and he was saying: "O company of Quraysh! Muhammad has come out with his companions, and I do not think you will reach it in time. Help! Help!" Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: So my attention was diverted from him, and his attention from me, because of the matter that had arisen.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Abd al-Aziz bin Imran, who is matruk (abandoned).

Urwah narrates: Sayyidah Atikah bint Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with her), who was the paternal aunt of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), was sitting with her brother Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him). A little before Badr she saw a dream and was alarmed. That same night, when she had been alarmed and had woken from her sleep, she sent word to her brother Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) and told him: "I have seen a dream, and because of it I fear that your people will be struck by destruction." Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "What have you seen?" The lady said: "I will not tell it to you until you promise me that you will not mention it before anyone, for if people hear this dream, they will hurt us and say things to us that we will not like." So Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) made this promise to the lady. The lady said: "I saw a rider who came on his mount from the upper part of Makkah and shouted at the top of his voice: 'O family of traitors! O family of the wicked! Set out within two or three nights!' Then he entered the mosque while still on his mount and made this announcement in the mosque, shouting three times. Men, women and children went towards him, and people were extremely distressed because of him. Then I saw as though he had climbed onto the roof of the Ka'bah on his mount, and there too he made this announcement, shouting three times: 'O family of traitors! O family of the wicked! Set out within two or three nights!' until his voice spread throughout Makkah. Then he went to a huge rock, detached it from its base and then hurled it towards the people of Makkah. The rock came on with a roaring sound coming from it, and when it reached the foot of the mountain, it shattered, and to my knowledge some part of that rock entered every house and every quarter of Makkah. So I have come to fear for your people that some evil is about to befall them." Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) was disturbed by this. He left the lady, and that same night he met al-Walid bin Utbah bin Rabi'ah, who was a friend of Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). He related Atikah's dream to him and instructed him not to mention it before anyone. Al-Walid mentioned it to his father, Utbah mentioned it to his brother Shaybah, and then the matter spread until it reached Abu Jahl bin Hisham too. The next morning, when Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) was performing tawaf of the House of Allah, he found Abu Jahl, Utbah bin Rabi'ah, Shaybah bin Rabi'ah, Umayyah bin Khalaf, Zam'ah bin al-Aswad and Abu al-Bakhtari talking among a group of people. When these people saw Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) performing tawaf of the House of Allah, Abu Jahl bin Hisham called out to him loudly: "O Abu al-Fadl, when you have completed your tawaf, come to us." When he completed his tawaf, he came and sat with them. Abu Jahl said: "O Abu al-Fadl, what is this dream that Atikah has seen?" Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "She has not seen anything." Abu Jahl said: "Yes, (she has seen it). O Banu Hashim, were you not content that your men tell lies, that now you have started bringing us the lies of women too? We and you were like two racehorses; for a long time we strove to outstrip each other in glory, and when the riders drew level, you said: 'There is a prophet among us.' Now all that remains is for you to say: 'There is a woman prophet among us too.' To my knowledge there is no household with more lying men or lying women than your household." That day Abu Jahl caused Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) severe hurt. Abu Jahl said: "Atikah claims that a rider said: 'Set out within two or three nights.' So these three days will pass and your lie will become clear before Quraysh, and then we will write a document and hang it on the Ka'bah stating that you are the most lying household among the Arabs, in men and women alike. O Banu Qusayy, are you not content that you held the offices of the hijabah (keeping of the Ka'bah), the nadwah (council), the siqayah (providing water) and the liwa' (banner), that now you have come to us and begun speaking of a prophet from among yourselves?" That day Abu Jahl caused Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) severe hurt. Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "O worthless one! Hold on! You are nothing but a foul-smelling man; the lying is in you and in your household." One of those present said to him: "O Abu al-Fadl, you were neither harsh-tempered nor foul-mouthed." Then Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) had to face severe hurt on account of Sayyidah Atikah (may Allah be pleased with her), because he had spread Sayyidah Atikah's (may Allah be pleased with her) account. When the evening of the third night came, counting from the night in which Sayyidah Atikah (may Allah be pleased with her) had seen the dream, a rider came to them whom Abu Sufyan had sent; he was Damdam bin Amr al-Ghifari. He said: "O family of traitors, set out, for Muhammad and his companions have set out to attack the caravan of Abu Sufyan, so save your caravan!" Quraysh were alarmed, they became anxious on account of Atikah's dream, and they set out riding every weak and every sturdy camel.
Al-Tabarani recorded it as a "mursal" narration. Its chain contains a narrator, Ibn Lahi'ah, in whom there is weakness, and the hadith he narrates is hasan (good).

Mus'ab bin Abdullah and others have narrated about Quraysh that Sayyidah Atikah bint Abd al-Muttalib composed these verses about the truth of her dream and Quraysh's denial of her, after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) inflicted harm on those people at the Battle of Badr: "Was that dream not true, whose interpretation was brought by a man fleeing back from the people? He saw, and then he brought you the certainty he had seen with his own two eyes: the sharp-edged swords do not lie. You said that I had lied, though I had not lied; only one who is himself a liar will call me a liar about the truth. That fleeing man fled only out of fear of death; he was the sensible one among them, for whom the ways had grown narrow. Did the man who cried out to the people flee from the resolve of their hearts? These are but desires, and dreams that have no home. They came up against your lives with sharp-edged swords, the way a cloud comes from the south. When those people faced Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), what did they see that day, they who are his cousins? And in war there are ups and downs. Did not Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) cover those people with a blow at whose fall the coward is left bewildered and the stars appear by day? On the day of facing Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), did this situation not arise, when the aid of war tore at the shoulders? Their swords stood out because of inner fervour as a strong wind comes, though before there had been fever in them. I have sworn that if you do this again, they will uproot you and push you aside, with attackers on both its flanks. It seems as though the light of the sun, with the gleam of its rays, has light on both sides: one is a ray, and one is a piercing meteor."
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Ibn Lahi'ah, in whom there is weakness, and his narration is hasan (good). The remaining narrators of this narration are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: In the pre-Islamic era, Utbah bin Rabi'ah was a friend of Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him). When Utbah came to Madinah, he would stay with Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), and when Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) went to Makkah, he would stay with Utbah. Utbah used to call him "my brother from Yathrib". The narrator states: After the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had come to Madinah, Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) went to Makkah and stayed with Utbah as before. He said: "I want to perform tawaf of the House of Allah." Utbah said to him: "Wait for now, so that the men of Quraysh disperse from the mosque around the House of Allah." The narrator says: He waited a little while, then Utbah said: "Come with me." When they came to the House of Allah, Abu Jahl confronted Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "O Sa'd, you have given refuge to Muhammad, and then you perform tawaf of the House of Allah in safety?" Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "If you stop me from this, I will cut off your route and obstruct your trade, which runs from such-and-such a place to such-and-such." The narrator says: Their voices grew loud, and Utbah said to Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him): "Are you raising your voice against Abu al-Hakam?" Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Are you saying this? I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'He will have you killed.'" Utbah freed his hand from him and said: "Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) does not lie." The narrator says: Then Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) performed tawaf and went back. Utbah came to his wife and said: "Did you not hear what my brother from Yathrib has said?" The woman asked: "What did he say?" Utbah told her: "He said that Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) will kill me, and Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) does not lie." The narrator states: Then, after only a short time had passed, the event of Badr took place, and Abu Jahl was going around among the people. The narrator says: After this, the narrator mentioned the complete hadith. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: A hadith narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) is mentioned in the "Sahih" about Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) staying with Umayyah bin Khalaf, while this narration mentions that he stayed with Utbah bin Rabi'ah; and Allah knows best.
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When we were in Madinah, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have been told about the caravan of Abu Sufyan that it is approaching. Would you be interested in our going out towards this caravan? Perhaps Allah Almighty will grant us that caravan as spoils." We submitted: "Very well." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out, and we set out with him. We kept travelling for one or two days. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I think those people have received news of your setting out." We submitted: "No, by Allah! We do not have the strength to fight the enemy; we set out only for the caravan." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is your opinion?" We submitted something similar. Then Sayyiduna al-Miqdad bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, in such a situation we will not say to you what the people of Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) (which the Qur'an mentions in these words): 'So go, you and your Lord, and fight; we are sitting right here.'" He said: "O company of the Ansar, it is our wish that we too had spoken the way al-Miqdad spoke; that would have been dearer to us than receiving a great deal of wealth." Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Just as your Lord brought you out of your house with the truth, while a party of the believers disliked it, arguing with you about the truth after it had become clear, as though they were being driven towards death while they looked on." Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "Indeed, I am with you, so keep firm those who have believed. I will soon cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve, so strike above their necks and strike every joint of theirs." Allah Almighty also said: "And when Allah promised you one of the two groups, that it would be yours, and you wished that the one without "shawkah" (armed strength) would be yours." Here "shawkah" means the people (that is, the army of the disbelievers of Makkah), and "the one without shawkah" means (their trade) caravan. When Allah Almighty promised one of the two, either the people (that is, the disbelievers of Quraysh) or the caravan, our hearts were set at ease. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a man to assess the situation of the people. He reported: "I have seen people, but I could not make out (who they are)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is they! It is they! Come forward so that we may count ourselves." The narrator says: We were three hundred and thirteen men. We informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of our number, and he was pleased by this and said: "This is the number of the companions of Talut." Then we gathered facing the enemy and formed rows. One of us stepped out ahead of the row. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at them and said: "Stay with me! Stay with me!" Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, I implore You by Your promise." Sayyiduna Ibn Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: "O Messenger of Allah, I want to give you a piece of advice, although the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is too excellent for anyone to advise him, and Allah Almighty is too great for us to implore Him by His promise." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ibn Rawahah, I will certainly implore Allah Almighty by His promise, for Allah Almighty does not break His promise." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a handful of dust and threw it towards the enemy, and those people were routed. So Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "And you did not throw when you threw, but Allah threw." So we both killed (enemy fighters) and took prisoners. Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: "O Messenger of Allah, I think you should not keep prisoners, for we are people who call (to Islam) and bring hearts together." We, that is the Ansar, said: "What Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) has said, he has said out of envy of us." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) slept, and when he woke up, he said: "Call Umar to me!" He was called, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty has revealed this verse to me: 'It is not fitting for a prophet that he should have (disbelievers) as prisoners (and take ransom) until he has shed blood in the land. You desire the goods of this world, while Allah Almighty intends (for you) the Hereafter (and its good), and Allah Almighty is Mighty (and) Wise.'"
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its chain is hasan (good).

Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Rifa'ah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this statement of his father: My brother Khallad and I set out for Badr with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), riding our weak camel. When we reached the place called al-Barid, beyond al-Rawha', our camel knelt down. I said: "O Allah, grant us this favour: if we reach near Madinah, we will sacrifice it." We were still in this state when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by us. He asked: "What is the matter with you two?" We submitted: "Our camel has knelt down (and is no longer fit to travel)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted and performed ablution. Then he put some of his saliva into his ablution water and instructed us to open the camel's mouth for him. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) poured the remaining water of his ablution into the camel's mouth, then he poured it on its head, then on its neck, then on the place below the neck, then on its hump, then on its back, then on its tail. Then he supplicated: "O Allah, provide Rafi' and Khallad with a mount." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went on. We got up and set off, and as we travelled we caught up with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) towards mid-morning, and our camel was ahead of all the camels. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw us, he laughed. We kept going until we came to Badr, and when we were near Badr, our camel knelt down again. We said: "Al-hamdu lillah (All praise is for Allah)." Then we slaughtered it and gave its meat in charity.
Al-Bazzar recorded it as the complete narration, and al-Tabarani recorded part of it. Its chain contains a narrator, Abd al-Aziz bin Imran, who is matruk (abandoned).

Sayyiduna Utbah bin Abd al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his companions: "Get up and fight!" The people submitted: "Very well, O Messenger of Allah! We will not say what the Children of Israel said to Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) (which the Qur'an mentions in these words): 'So go, you and your Lord, and fight; we are sitting right here.' Rather, (we will say:) Go, you and your Lord, O Sayyiduna Muhammad, and fight; we will take part in the fighting along with you."
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When we came to Madinah and ate its fruits, they did not agree with us, and we came down with fever. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept seeking news about Badr. When the news reached us that the polytheists were approaching, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out for Badr (Badr is a well). The polytheists got there before us. There we found two of their men: one man belonged to Quraysh, and one was a slave of Uqbah bin Abi Mu'ayt. As for the Qurashi man, he ran away; as for Uqbah's slave, we seized him and asked him: "How many are those people?" He replied: "By Allah, those people are many in number and they have plenty of weapons." Whenever he said this, the Muslims would start beating him, until they brought him to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "How many are those people?" He said: "By Allah, those people are many in number and they have plenty of weapons." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) tried to get him to tell him the correct figure, but he would not. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "How many camels have those people slaughtered?" He said: "They slaughter ten camels every day." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They will be a thousand; one camel will be for around a hundred people." Then we faced a little trouble because of rain, and we came under a tree; beneath that tree we were protecting ourselves from the rain with shields. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept supplicating to his Lord all night, saying: "O Allah, if You destroy this group, then You will not be worshipped." Then, when true dawn broke, he announced: "O servants of Allah, pray!" The people came out from under the tree and the shields. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in prayer and urged us to fight. Then he said: "Quraysh will be gathered beneath this red part of this mountain." When the enemy drew near and we had formed our rows facing them, one of their men was moving among the people on his red camel. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ali, call Hamzah." He was at that time the closest of them to the polytheists. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who is this man on the red camel, and what is he saying to them?" Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If anyone among the enemy speaks of good, it will be this man on the red camel." Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) came and reported: "He is Utbah bin Rabi'ah, and he is stopping the people from fighting and saying to them: 'O my people, I have seen people who are ready to die; when you reach them, things will not go well for you. O my people, tie today's band on my head (that is, put the blame on me) and say that Utbah bin Rabi'ah turned coward, although you know that I am not a coward.'" When Abu Jahl heard this, he said: "You are saying this? By Allah, had anyone other than you said this, I would have reviled him. Terror has filled you." Utbah said: "O you who know nothing of hardship! Are you saying this to me? Today you will find out which of us is the coward." The narrator states: Then Utbah, his brother Shaybah and his son al-Walid came forward to fight and said: "Who will come out against us?" Some young men from the Ansar came out. Utbah said: "We do not want to fight these; rather, let our cousins from Banu Abd al-Muttalib come out against us." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ali, stand up! O Hamzah, stand up! O Ubaydah bin al-Harith bin al-Muttalib, stand up!" Allah Almighty had the two sons of Rabi'ah, Shaybah and Utbah, killed, and had al-Walid bin Utbah killed too. Sayyiduna Ubaydah bin al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) was wounded. In this battle we killed seventy of their men and took seventy prisoners. A short man from the Ansar brought Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) as a prisoner. Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, this man did not capture me. Rather, I was captured by a man who was extremely handsome, with the hair receded from the sides of his head, riding a fine horse; I do not see him among the people." The Ansari submitted: "O Messenger of Allah, I captured him." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Be quiet! Allah Almighty has helped you by means of a noble angel." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: From the descendants of Abd al-Muttalib we took Abbas, Aqil and Nawfal bin al-Harith prisoner. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Abu Dawud recorded part of this narration.
Ahmad and al-Bazzar recorded it. The narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih, except Harithah bin Mudarrib, and he is thiqah (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When the Muslims reached Badr and the polytheists had also arrived, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at Utbah bin Rabi'ah, who was riding a red camel. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If good can be found with anyone among these people, it can be found with this man on the red camel. If they obey him, they will be rightly guided." Utbah was saying: "O my people, heed me concerning these people. If you do this (fight them), resentment will always remain in your hearts towards one another; each one of you will have to look at the killer of his brother or the killer of his father. So lay this matter on my head and go back!" Abu Jahl said: "By Allah, ever since he saw Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions, his lungs have swollen with fright. Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions are no more than a party that could be fed by one slaughtered camel, if we meet them." Utbah said: "You will soon learn who is the coward and the one who ruins his people. By Allah, I have seen these people, and they will strike you hard. Do you not see that their heads are like vipers (snakes) and their faces like swords?" Then he called his brother and his son, came out walking between the two of them, and called for single combat.

Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the occasion of the Battle of Badr I was at a well, drawing water from it. Meanwhile a strong wind came, then another strong wind came; I had never seen a wind as strong as it, except the one that had come before it. Then another strong wind came. The first time, Sayyiduna Mika'il (peace be upon him) came with a thousand angels and stood on the right side of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); the second time, Sayyiduna Israfil (peace be upon him) came with a thousand angels and stood on the left side of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); the third time, Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) came with a thousand angels. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was on the right side of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and I was on the left side of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When Allah Almighty routed the disbelievers, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted me on his horse. When I had settled on it, it bolted with me and I ended up on its neck. I prayed to Allah Almighty, and Allah Almighty held me firmly on it. Then I struck with my spear until the blood reached my armpits.

Sayyiduna Rifa'ah bin Rafi' al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When Iblis saw what the angels were doing to the polytheists, he feared that killing would reach him. Al-Harith bin Hisham grabbed hold of him, thinking that he was Suraqah bin Malik. He punched al-Harith in the chest, threw him aside, and then fled in fear until he fell into the sea. Then he raised both his hands and said: "O Allah, I ask You to grant me respite." He feared that he too would be killed. Then Abu Jahl came and said: "O people, do not let Suraqah's forsaking of you defeat you, for he had made a pact with Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). And do not let the killing of Utbah and Shaybah, the sons of Rabi'ah, terrify you, for they acted in haste. By al-Lat and al-Uzza, we will not return until we have bound them with ropes. I must not find any man who has killed any one of them; rather, seize them, so that you make them recognise their evil conduct in separating from you and turning away from al-Lat and al-Uzza." Then Abu Jahl recited these verses by way of example: "What does the relentless war resent in me? That I am a young man, and my age is young. It was for a situation like this that my mother gave birth to me."
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Abd al-Aziz bin Imran, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Allah Almighty revealed this verse to His Prophet in Makkah: "Soon the assembly (or band) will be defeated, and they will turn their backs and flee." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, what is meant by the assembly?" This was before the Battle of Badr. When the Battle of Badr took place and Quraysh were routed, I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in pursuit of them, his sword drawn, and he was reciting: "Soon the assembly (or band) will be defeated, and they will turn their backs and flee." When the Battle of Badr took place, Allah Almighty revealed this verse concerning those people: "Until, when We seized their affluent ones with punishment." And He revealed this verse: "Have you not seen those who exchanged the favour of Allah (that is, faith) for disbelief?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) threw dust at those people and it reached all of them; the dust filled their eyes and mouths, so much so that a man would come along wiping the dust from his eyes and mouth. So Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "And you did not throw when you threw, but it was Allah Almighty who threw." And Allah Almighty revealed this verse concerning Iblis: "When the two armies saw each other, he turned on his heels and said: 'I am free of you; I see what you do not see; I fear Allah Almighty, and Allah Almighty is severe in punishment.'" On the day of Badr, Utbah bin Rabi'ah and some of the polytheists with him said: "Their religion has deluded these people." So Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "When the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is a disease said: 'Their religion has deluded these people.'"
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains Abd al-Aziz bin Imran, who is da'if (weak).

When the Battle of Badr came, I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) brandishing a sword in his hand, and he was reciting this verse: "Soon the assembly (or band) will be defeated, and they will turn their backs and flee."

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Abu Jahl bin Hisham said: "Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) claims that if you do not obey him, he will slaughter you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do say that, and you will be among those slaughtered." On the day of Badr, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him slain, he said: "O Allah, You have fulfilled what You promised me." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Asad (may Allah be pleased with him) towards Abu Jahl. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked: "Did you kill him?" He said: "No, rather Allah Almighty killed him." Sayyiduna Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You killed him." He replied: "Yes." Sayyiduna Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Had he wished, he could have held you in his palm." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah, I killed him, and I stripped him of his outer garments." He asked: "What is his mark?" Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "There is a black mole on the inner side of his right thigh." Sayyiduna Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) recognised the description and said: "You stripped him of his garments; you will not have stripped any Qurashi other than him."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the day of Badr I came to Abu Jahl. His leg had been struck and he was lying wounded, and he was keeping people away from himself with his sword. I said: "All praise belongs to Allah Almighty, who has disgraced you, O enemy of Allah!" He said: "I am only a man whose own people have killed him." Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I tried to strike him with my sword, which was not very large; it struck his hand and his sword fell. Then I took it and struck him with it until I killed him. Then I left and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), hurrying along in joy, and I told him about it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah, besides whom there is no god? (Is this news true?)" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated this question three times, and I said: "By Allah, besides whom there is no god (this news is true)." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came walking with me, stood by his body, and said: "O enemy of Allah, all praise belongs to Allah Almighty, who has disgraced you." (Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) "This is the Pharaoh of this Ummah."

Ibn Ishaq listed the names of those who took part in the Battle of Badr (as follows): from the Ansar, of the branch of Banu Khazraj, Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Amr bin al-Jamuh (may Allah be pleased with him). He killed Abu Jahl, and Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl cut off his hand. He lived until the time of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). The complete names of those who took part in the Battle of Badr will come later.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When Abu Jahl was dragged to the pit, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Had Abu Talib been alive, he would have known that our swords have clung to our fingertips (that is, they have not left our hands)."
Al-Bazzar recorded it. Its chain contains Hibban bin Ali, who is da'if (weak), though he has been declared trustworthy.
Al-Tabarani recorded it and added these words: Abu Talib said: "You have spoken falsely, by the House of Allah! If what I see comes to pass, our swords will cling to our fingertips, and (our) men in coats of mail will rise against you as water-carrying camels rise on the road of Halahil." Ibn Munadhir says: Both are the same; people have narrated the word as "Halahil" and also as "Jalajil".

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Once I was passing by Badr when a man came out of a pit with a chain around his neck. He called out to me: "O Abdullah, give me a drink! O Abdullah, give me something to drink! O Abdullah, give me something to drink!" (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says:) I do not know whether he knew my name or whether he called me "O servant of Allah" according to the custom of the Arabs. Then another man came out of that pit with a stick in his hand. He called out: "O servant of Allah, do not give him a drink, for he is a disbeliever." Then he struck him with the stick (or whip), and the man went back into the pit. I hurried to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him about it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me: "Did you see him?" I said: "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That was the enemy of Allah, Abu Jahl, and that is his punishment, which will continue until the Day of Resurrection."

Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "O Hawdhah, were you present at Badr?" He replied: "Yes, O Commander of the Faithful, and that counts against me, not in my favour." Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "How old were you at that time?" He said: "In those days I was a strong and sturdy man, like a great bare rock. It is as if I am still looking at them as they formed a long rank in front of us, and as if I am still looking at the gleam of their swords, which was like the rays of the sun through the clouds. Meanwhile some men came upon us who belonged to the vanguard. Among them was Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), who was like a lion, and he was saying: 'Now these people will not eat the dates of Makkah' (that is, they will not return from here alive). Behind him was Hamzah bin Abd al-Muttalib, who had a white feather on his chest by which he was marked; he was like a camel that smashes down a building. I moved out of the way of those two and left them to Hanzalah," that is, the brother of Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah said to him (that is, Hawdhah): "May Allah Almighty be pleased with you; there should be no ingratitude to Allah Almighty. I wish I knew, O Hawdhah, when you found rest." He replied: "By Allah, O Commander of the Faithful, I found no rest until I had seen the hills of Arbad. Then I thought: 'Alas, what has become of Hanzalah?'" Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "You mention Hanzalah the way a well-off man mentions his poor brother: he hardly mentions him except when drowsy or pretending to be drowsy."
