Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Once I was passing by Badr when a man came out of a pit with a chain around his neck. He called out to me: "O Abdullah, give me a drink! O Abdullah, give me something to drink! O Abdullah, give me something to drink!" (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says:) I do not know whether he knew my name or whether he called me "O servant of Allah" according to the custom of the Arabs. Then another man came out of that pit with a stick in his hand. He called out: "O servant of Allah, do not give him a drink, for he is a disbeliever." Then he struck him with the stick (or whip), and the man went back into the pit. I hurried to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him about it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me: "Did you see him?" I said: "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That was the enemy of Allah, Abu Jahl, and that is his punishment, which will continue until the Day of Resurrection."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator whom I do not know.
