Imam Ahmad, with his chain, recorded this statement of al-Zuhri: A man of knowledge from the Ansar told me that he heard Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) narrating: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) felt (intense) grief over it, to the point that some of them were overcome by misgivings. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was one of those people. Once I was sitting in the shade of a building when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by me and also greeted me with salam, but I did not notice that he had passed by or that he had greeted me. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went on; he went to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said to him: "Will you not be amazed? I passed by Uthman and greeted him with salam, but he did not return my greeting." Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came. This was during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). Both of them greeted me with salam, and then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Your brother Umar came to me and mentioned that he passed by (you) and greeted you with salam, but you did not answer him. Why did you do that?"
Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: "I did not do that." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Yes! By Allah, you did. O Banu Umayyah! This is the self-regard of your people." Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: "By Allah, I did not even notice that you passed by or that you greeted me." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Uthman is telling the truth. He must not have paid attention to you because of some worry." I said: "Yes!" Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "What is that matter?" Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Allah Almighty took His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in death before I could ask him about the salvation of this matter." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I asked him (peace and blessings be upon him) about that." (Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said:) I got up and went to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said to him: "May my mother and father be sacrificed for you, you are the most deserving of it." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) related: (Once) I said: "O Messenger of Allah! What is the salvation of this matter?" Then
the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever accepts from me the word that I presented to my uncle and that he did not accept, that word will be a means of salvation for him."
Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat recorded this narration in abridged form, while Imam Abu Ya'la recorded it as the complete narration, and Imam al-Bazzar recorded a similar narration. It contains a narrator who is not named; however, Imam al-Zuhri declared him thiqah (trustworthy) and left him mubham (unnamed).
I have mentioned its chain so that I do not begin the book with a munqati' (broken) chain.

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) met Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Why is it that I see you troubled?" Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "It is about a word that I heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said that this word makes (Paradise) obligatory, but I was not able to ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about which word it was." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I know which word it is." Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Which is it?" Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "It is La ilaha illallah (there is no god but Allah)."
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except that Abu Wa'il did not hear it from Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him).

Sayyiduna Uthman al-Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "I know a word which, if a servant says it truly from his heart, he is made forbidden to the Fire." Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said (to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)): "Shall I tell you which word it is? It is the word of sincerity (ikhlas) which Allah Almighty made binding upon Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions, and it is the word of piety (taqwa) which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) urged upon his uncle (Abu Talib) at the time of his death: testifying that there is no god but Allah." Allamah al-Haythami says: "I say: The hadith narrated from Sayyiduna Umar was recorded by Imam Ibn Majah without this context. Its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy). Imam Ahmad recorded it."

Sayyiduna Suhayl bin al-Bayda' narrated: Once we were travelling with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I was riding behind him (peace and blessings be upon him) on the mount. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Suhayl bin al-Bayda'!" He (peace and blessings be upon him) called him in a loud voice twice or perhaps three times, and each time Sayyiduna Suhayl (may Allah be pleased with him) answered him. When the people heard the voice of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), they realised that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wanted the people's attention. So those who were ahead stopped and those who were behind came and joined, until, when they had gathered, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Whoever testifies that there is no god but Allah, Allah Almighty will make him forbidden to Hell and will make Paradise obligatory for him."
Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded it. It revolves around a narrator named Sa'id bin al-Salt. Ibn Abi Hatim said: This narration has also been reported from Sayyiduna Suhayl bin al-Bayda' (may Allah be pleased with him) as a mursal narration, and from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) as a muttasil (connected) narration.

Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and with me were some people of my tribe. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Receive glad tidings, and convey these glad tidings to those behind you: whoever testifies sincerely that there is no god but Allah will enter Paradise." The narrator said: We left the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to give the people the glad tidings, and we met Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). He took us back with him to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! In that case the people will rely on this alone." And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent.
Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Whoever says: 'There is no god but Allah, He alone is God and He has no partner,'
that person will enter Paradise." The narrator said: I said: "Even if he has committed adultery or stolen?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Even if he has committed adultery or stolen." I said: "Even if he has committed adultery or stolen?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Even if he has committed adultery or stolen." I said: "Even if he has committed adultery or stolen?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Even if he has committed adultery or stolen, even if the nose of Abu al-Darda' be rubbed in the dust!" (That is, however displeasing this may be to him.)
The narrator said: I went out to announce this among the people, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) met me. He said: "Go back! For if the people come to know of this, they will rely on it alone." The narrator said: So I came back

Imam Ahmad, al-Bazzar and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat recorded it. The chain of Imam Ahmad is the most authentic; it contains a narrator, Ibn Lahi'ah, whom several scholars have used as evidence.

It is reported about Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) that when his final moments drew near, he said: "Bring the people to me." The people came to him, and he said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
"Whoever comes before Allah Almighty in a state in which he associates nothing with Him as a partner, Allah Almighty will admit that person into Paradise."
(Then Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said:) "I am narrating this hadith only now, close to death, and the witness to this narration is Sayyiduna Uwaymir Abu al-Darda'." The people went to Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: "My brother (that is, Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him)) has spoken the truth, and he has narrated this hadith to you close to his death."
Imam Ahmad recorded it; its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except that Abu Salih did not hear from Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him).

Ya'la bin Shaddad narrated: My father, Sayyiduna Shaddad (may Allah be pleased with him), narrated this hadith to me, while Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) was also present there and confirmed him (that is, my father, Sayyiduna Shaddad (may Allah be pleased with him)). My father said: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Is there any stranger among you?" (The narrator said: By stranger) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) meant the People of the Book. We said: "No, O Messenger of Allah!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that the door be closed and said: "Raise your hands and say La ilaha illallah (there is no god but Allah)!" We kept our hands raised for a while, then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) lowered his blessed hand and said: "All praise belongs to Allah alone. O Allah, You have sent me with this word, commanded me with it and promised me Paradise for it, and You do not break the promise." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, rejoice, for Allah Almighty has forgiven you."
Imam Ahmad, Imam al-Tabarani and Imam al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Abu Amrah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: We went with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to take part in a military expedition. The people were struck by hunger, so they asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for permission to slaughter some of their riding animals. They said: "Allah Almighty will bring us (to our destination) by means of it." When Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) saw that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had resolved to give the people permission to slaughter some of their riding animals, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
"O Messenger of Allah! What will our condition be tomorrow when we face the enemy while we are hungry and on foot? O Messenger of Allah! Rather, if you see fit, instruct the people to bring whatever provisions they have left, then pray to Allah Almighty for blessing in it, and Allah Almighty will place blessing for us in your supplication" (the narrator is unsure, or perhaps the words are:) "will grant us what we need because of your (peace and blessings be upon him) supplication." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed the people to bring whatever provisions they had left, and people began bringing a handful of food or somewhat more. The one who brought the most had brought one sa' of dates. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gathered all of it and made whatever supplication Allah willed. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed the people of the army to bring their vessels and directed them to take handfuls. They filled every vessel in the army, and the same amount still remained. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled until his side teeth became visible, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"I testify that there is no god but Allah, and I testify that I am the Messenger of Allah. Whichever servant comes before Allah Almighty believing in this (that is, the testimony of faith),
this word will protect him from Hell on the Day of Resurrection."
Imam Ahmad (in his Musnad) and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat recorded it, but they recorded these additional words in it:
Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called for a bowl, and it was placed before him (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) called for water, and it was poured into it. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rinsed his mouth into it and recited whatever Allah willed. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) put his little finger into it, and I swear by Allah that I saw springs of water gushing forth from the fingers of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the people the order, and they drank themselves, gave (their animals) water to drink, and filled their waterskins and vessels. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Whoever comes before Allah Almighty on the Day of Resurrection with these two testimonies will be admitted into Paradise, whatever shortcomings there may be in (that person)."
The narrators of this narration are thiqat (trustworthy).

Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, praised and extolled Allah Almighty, and then said: "What is the matter with people, that the side of the tree that is next to the Messenger of Allah is more hateful to them than the other side?" At that, everyone began to weep. A man said: "Whoever asks for permission after this will be a fool." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praised Allah Almighty, spoke words of good, and then said: "I bear witness before Allah Almighty and say: Any servant who dies in a state in which he testifies that there is no god but Allah and that I am indeed the Messenger of Allah, and (testifies to this) with a truthful heart and then keeps to the right path, that person will enter Paradise." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: "My Lord has promised me that He will admit seventy thousand people of my Ummah into Paradise in such a way that they will neither be taken to account nor be punished. And I hope that you will not enter Paradise until you, and the righteous among your forefathers, your wives and your offspring, have taken up your dwellings in Paradise."

Sayyiduna Khuraym bin Fatik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Deeds are of six kinds and people are of four kinds. Two kinds of deeds are decisive; (one kind of deed) is on the basis of like for like; (one kind of deed is) that one good deed is rewarded tenfold; (and one kind of deed is such) that one good deed is rewarded seven hundredfold. As for the two decisive things: whoever dies in a state in which he does not associate anyone with Allah as a partner will enter Paradise, and whoever dies in a state in which he associates someone with Allah Almighty as a partner will go to Hell. As for the case of like for like: whoever firmly intends a good deed, and his heart is conscious of that good deed, and Allah Almighty knows of that good deed regarding that person (that he truly had the firm intention of doing that good deed, but then for some reason was unable to do it), one good deed is recorded for that person; and whoever commits an evil deed, one evil deed is recorded against him. Whoever does a good deed will receive a tenfold reward, and whoever spends something in the path of Allah will receive a seven-hundredfold reward. As for (the two kinds of) people: there are some who are given ample means in this world and will face hardship in the Hereafter, and there are some who face hardship in this world and will have ease in the Hereafter."
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Imam al-Tirmidhi and Imam al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on them) recorded from this narration the part about spending in the path of Allah.
Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat recorded it. The narrators of Imam Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih, except that he stated: This narration is reported from al-Rukayn bin al-Rabi', from a man, from Sayyiduna Khuraym (may Allah be pleased with him); whereas Imam al-Tabarani stated: This narration is reported from al-Rukayn bin al-Rabi', from his father, from his uncle Yusayr bin Amilah. Its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

His mount was descending from a mountain pass, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was riding alone. When the road levelled out, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled and said the takbir (Allahu Akbar), and because he (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir, we also said the takbir. After going on for a while, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed again and said the takbir, and because he (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir, we also said the takbir. When we reached him, those present said: "O Messenger of Allah! We said the takbir because you (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir, but we did not understand what you (peace and blessings be upon him) were laughing at." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Jibril was leading my she-camel. When the road levelled out, he turned to me and said: 'Receive these glad tidings and give your Ummah the glad tidings that whoever says: There is no god but Allah, He alone is God and He has no partner, that person will enter Paradise.' So I laughed and proclaimed the greatness of my Lord. Then, after going on a little, he turned to me and said: 'Receive these glad tidings and give your Ummah the glad tidings that whoever says: There is no god but Allah, He alone is God and He has no partner, will enter Paradise, and Allah Almighty will make the Fire forbidden to him.' Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I came along with twelve riders, and we halted our mounts near the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (that is, outside Madinah). My companions said: "Who will look after our camels, so that we can go and benefit from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? Then, when that person comes, we will tell him whatever we have heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." I said: "I will do it." Then I thought to myself: "In this way I will be the loser, because my companions will hear things from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that I will not have heard." One day I was present, and I heard a man narrating: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Whoever performs ablution completely and then stands up to offer prayer becomes, with respect to his sins, as he was on the day his mother gave birth to him." I liked this saying very much, and Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "What would it have been like had you heard the other saying, which is even better than this?" I said: "Repeat it to me, may Allah make me a ransom for you." Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Whoever dies in a state in which he does not associate anyone with Allah as a partner, all the gates of Paradise will be opened for him, and he may enter through whichever (gate) he wishes; and Paradise has eight gates."
Sayyiduna Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us, and I came and sat facing him (peace and blessings be upon him), but he turned his face away from me. So I got up and came and sat facing him (from the other side). This happened three times. When it happened the fourth time, I said: "O Prophet of Allah! May my mother and father be sacrificed for you! Why are you turning your face away from me?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to me, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Which is dearer to you, one or twelve?" He said this twice or perhaps three times. When I saw this, I went back to my companions.

رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْأَوْسَطِ ، وَفِي إِسْنَادِهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبَانَ .
Sayyiduna Umarah bin Ruwaybah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
"These are the two decisive things: whoever dies in a state in which he does not associate anyone with Allah as a partner, that person will go to Paradise; and whoever dies in a state in which he associates someone with Allah as a partner will go to Hell."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its chain contains a narrator, Muhammad bin Aban.
