Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I came along with twelve riders, and we halted our mounts near the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (that is, outside Madinah). My companions said: "Who will look after our camels, so that we can go and benefit from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? Then, when that person comes, we will tell him whatever we have heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." I said: "I will do it." Then I thought to myself: "In this way I will be the loser, because my companions will hear things from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that I will not have heard." One day I was present, and I heard a man narrating: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Whoever performs ablution completely and then stands up to offer prayer becomes, with respect to his sins, as he was on the day his mother gave birth to him." I liked this saying very much, and Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "What would it have been like had you heard the other saying, which is even better than this?" I said: "Repeat it to me, may Allah make me a ransom for you." Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Whoever dies in a state in which he does not associate anyone with Allah as a partner, all the gates of Paradise will be opened for him, and he may enter through whichever (gate) he wishes; and Paradise has eight gates."
Sayyiduna Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us, and I came and sat facing him (peace and blessings be upon him), but he turned his face away from me. So I got up and came and sat facing him (from the other side). This happened three times. When it happened the fourth time, I said: "O Prophet of Allah! May my mother and father be sacrificed for you! Why are you turning your face away from me?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to me, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Which is dearer to you, one or twelve?" He said this twice or perhaps three times. When I saw this, I went back to my companions.
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: A different hadith from this Companion is reported in the Sahih. Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, al-Qasim Abu Abd al-Rahman, who is matruk (abandoned).
