Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 35

Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A Muslim remains under the protection of Allah from the time his mother gives birth to him until the time he (after death) comes before his Lord. So if he comes before Allah Almighty with a truthful heart, with the testimony that there is no god but Allah" (the narrator is unsure, or perhaps the words are:) "with seeking forgiveness (istighfar), freedom from Hell is recorded for that person."
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it. It was narrated by Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman from his father, although he did not hear from his father.
