Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Go out (that is, go outside) and announce among the people:
'Whoever testifies that there is no god but Allah, Paradise becomes obligatory for him.'"
Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I went out and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) met me. He asked: "Where are you going?" I said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: 'Go out and announce among the people that whoever testifies that there is no god but Allah, Paradise becomes obligatory for him.'" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Go back to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), for I fear that people will rely on this alone." (Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said:) I went back to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Why have you come back?" I told him (peace and blessings be upon him) what Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had said, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He has spoken rightly."
Abu Ya'la recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Suwayd bin Abd al-Aziz, who is matruk (abandoned).
