Hadith Beginning with the Letter Alif (أ)

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Beware! Had you not given him (the child) anything, a lie would have been recorded against you in your record of deeds."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Beware! Soon you will have carpets and cushions (for better and more spacious living)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Listen! If he has sworn a false oath in order to consume (someone's) wealth unjustly, he will meet Allah Almighty while Allah Almighty is displeased with him and turning away from him."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Listen! The nations before you were destroyed only when they fell into a misguidance like this: they began to strike one part of the Book of Allah against another (and to set its parts in contradiction). It is necessary for you to regard what is lawful as lawful, to hold what is unlawful as unlawful, and simply to believe in what is ambiguous (whose meaning is not fully clear)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Remember! Had he said 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) before eating, that food would have been sufficient for all of you. So when any of you eats food, let him say 'Bismillah'; and if he forgets to say it at the beginning, let him say: 'Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu' (In the name of Allah, at its beginning and its end)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Remember! Had he recited this supplication in the evening, 'A'udhu bi-kalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq' (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of everything He has created), a scorpion's sting would never have harmed him until morning."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Remember! The people who come after you will never attain the blessing and virtue of your sa' (a particular measure) and your mudd (a quarter of a sa')."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Has it not reached you that I have cursed the one who brands an animal on its face or strikes it on its face?"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Are you not pleased that they (the disbelievers) should have the goods of this world, and we should have the Hereafter (with its everlasting blessings)?"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Did you not see the one (the angel) who appeared before me a short while ago? He was one of the angels who had never descended to the earth before this night. He sought permission from his Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, to greet me with salam and to give me the glad tidings that Hasan and Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both) are the leaders of the youth of the people of Paradise, and that Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) is the leader of the women of the people of Paradise."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Do you not know that embracing Islam demolishes all the sins that came before it, that emigrating (hijrah) wipes out the sins that came before it, and that performing Hajj also erases all the sins that came before it?"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Do you not know that the angels do not enter a house in which there is a picture (of a living being), and that those who make pictures will be punished on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said to them: 'Now bring to life what you have created'?"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Do you not know that you and your wealth are part of your father's earnings?"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Do you not know that an angel calls out in the heavens, making this supplication: 'O Allah! Give the one who spends in the way of Allah the best replacement, and bring ruin upon the wealth of the miser'?"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Could this man not find anything with which to tidy his dishevelled hair? Could this man not find anything (water and the like) with which to wash his clothes?"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Have you not passed by the valley of your people when it was completely barren and drought-stricken, then passed by it and found it green and flourishing, then passed by it and it was barren, then passed by it and it was green? (Life after death will come in exactly the same way, as Allah Almighty says:) 'Thus does Allah bring the dead to life.' [Surah al-Baqarah: 73]"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Listen! By Allah, I am indeed the one among you who fears Allah the most and who is the most mindful of Him."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Listen! By Allah, I am the one among you who fears Allah the most and is the most mindful of Him, yet (despite this) I fast and I also leave off fasting, I pray (voluntary prayer at night) and I also sleep, and I have married women. So whoever turns away from my Sunnah has nothing to do with me."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Listen! By Allah, I am trustworthy (amin) in the sight of the inhabitants of the heavens, and trustworthy in the sight of the inhabitants of the earth."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Listen! By Allah, had Usamah been a girl, I would surely have adorned her with jewellery and beautified her so that I could send her off (that is, give her in marriage)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Listen! By Allah, were it not the rule that envoys (ambassadors) are not killed, I would have struck off both your necks."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Does not any of you fear that, when he raises his head (towards the sky) during prayer, his sight may not be returned to him (that is, it may be taken away)?"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Does not any of you fear that, when he raises his head (from bowing or prostration) before the imam, Allah Almighty may change his head into the head of a donkey, or Allah Almighty may make his form the form of a donkey?"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"As for Ibrahim (peace be upon him), look at your companion (that is, me; I resemble him). As for Musa (peace be upon him), he was of a wheatish complexion with curly hair. It is as if I can see him descending into the valley, riding a red camel and reciting the Talbiyah, its nose-rein made of a rope of palm fibre."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"The man should (when taking the ritual bath) loosen the hair of his head thoroughly and wash it until the water reaches the roots of the hair. As for the woman, it is not necessary for her to undo her braided hair; she need only pour three handfuls of water over her head, and that is sufficient for her."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"As for me, I take water three times with the palms of both my hands and pour it over my head, then I pour water over the rest of my body."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"As for me, I pour water over my head three times (when taking the ritual bath)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"As for me, I do not eat while reclining."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"O Ja'far! You resemble me in both my appearance and my character. O Ali! You are from me and I am from you. O Zayd! You are our brother and our mawla (friend). And this girl will stay with her maternal aunt, for the maternal aunt is like a mother."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"O Ja'far! Your appearance is like my appearance, and my character is like your character, and you are from me and from my family tree. O Ali! You are my son-in-law and the father of my grandchildren; I am from you and you are from me. O Zayd! You are my mawla (freed slave), you are from me and belong to me, and you are the most beloved to me of all these people."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"The first of the signs of the Hour will be a fire that will come out from the east and drive the people to the west. The first thing the people of Paradise will be given to eat will be the caudate lobe of the fish's liver (i.e., its choicest piece). As for the child's resemblance to its father or mother: when the man's fluid precedes the woman's fluid, the child is drawn towards the father (i.e., resembles him), and when the woman's fluid precedes the man's fluid, the child resembles the mother."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"As for the permanent inhabitants of Hell who are deserving of it, they will neither die in it nor live (rather, they will remain in continuous punishment). However, there will be some people whom the Fire will touch because of their sins, and it will burn them until they die, until, when they have become charcoal, permission for intercession will be given. Then they will be brought group after group and spread out upon the rivers of Paradise. Then it will be said: 'O people of Paradise, pour water over them.' So they will sprout just as a seed sprouts in the debris carried by a flood."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"To proceed: O people, listen! I am only a human being, and soon the messenger of my Lord (the angel of death) will come to me and I will respond to his call. I am leaving among you two weighty things. The first of them is the Book of Allah, in which there is guidance and light. Whoever holds fast to it and acts upon it will remain upon guidance, and whoever strays from it will go astray. So hold fast to the Book of Allah. And (the second is) my family (Ahl al-Bayt). I remind you of Allah concerning my family; I remind you of Allah concerning my family."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"To proceed: O people, the number of people will keep increasing, but the Ansar will keep decreasing, until they become among the people like salt in food. So whoever among you is put in charge of an affair in which he is able to harm someone or benefit someone, let him accept the good from those among them (the Ansar) who do good, and overlook the faults of those among them who err."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"To proceed: Indeed, the most truthful speech is the Book of Allah, the best way is the way of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and the worst of affairs are newly invented matters (in the religion). Every newly invented matter is an innovation (bid'ah), every innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance leads to the Fire. The Hour will come upon you suddenly. I and the Hour have been sent together like these two (fingers). The Hour has come upon your heads. I am closer to every believer than his own self. Whoever dies leaving wealth, it belongs to his family, and whoever leaves a debt or helpless children, the responsibility for it is upon me and they are to come to me. And I am the guardian and patron of the believers."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"To proceed: Indeed, Allah Almighty has revealed in His Book: 'O people, fear your Lord who created you from a single soul' [Surah an-Nisa: 1], to the end of the verse. And He said: 'O you who believe, fear Allah, and let every soul look to what it has sent forth for tomorrow' [Surah al-Hashr: 18], and he recited up to 'they are the successful' [Surah al-Hashr: 20]. Then he said: Give charity before the time comes when you will be unable to give charity. Let a man give charity from his dinar, let a man give charity from his dirham, let a man give from his wheat, from his dates, and from his barley. Never regard any charity as insignificant, even if it is only a piece of a date."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"To proceed: Your state and eagerness last night were not hidden from me (that you were waiting to pray with me), but I feared that the night prayer (Tarawih) would be made obligatory upon you and that you would then be unable to perform it."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"To proceed: What is the matter with people who stipulate conditions that have no basis in the Book of Allah? Any condition that is not in the Book of Allah is utterly void, even if there are a hundred conditions. The decree of Allah is most deserving of being followed, and the condition of Allah is the most binding. And wala' (the right of inheritance that comes from freeing a slave) belongs only to the one who sets free."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"To proceed: What is the matter with the official (who collects zakah) whom we appoint to a task, and then he comes to us and says: 'This is the wealth from your work (i.e., the zakah), and this was given to me as a gift'? Why did he not sit in the house of his father and mother and then see whether he would be given gifts or not? By the One in whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! None of you misappropriates anything from it except that he will come on the Day of Resurrection carrying it on his neck. If it is a camel, it will be groaning; if it is a cow, it will be lowing; and if it is a sheep, it will be bleating. Indeed, I have conveyed (the message of Allah)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"To proceed: By Allah, I give wealth to one man and leave another, even though the one I leave is more beloved to me than the one I give to. But I give to some people because I see impatience and anxiety in their hearts, and I entrust other people to the self-sufficiency (contentment) and goodness that Allah has placed in their hearts. Among these (patient and content) people is Amr bin Taghlib."
