Jibril (peace be upon him) began to draw close to the earth and to bow down, and then an angel appeared standing before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Muhammad, Allah commands you to choose between being a servant prophet and a king prophet. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Jibril (peace be upon him) signalled to me with his hand to be humble, and I knew that he was a sincere adviser to me, so I said: A servant prophet. Then that angel ascended to the sky, and I said: O Jibril, I had wanted to ask you about this, but what I saw of your state made me forget to ask. Who was this, O Jibril? He said: This is Israfil (peace be upon him). Since the day Allah created him, he has stood before Him with his two feet aligned, not raising his gaze. Between him and the Lord are seventy lights; if any one of those lights came near him, he would be burnt. Before him is a tablet; when Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, permits something in the sky or on the earth, that revelation rises and strikes his forehead, and he looks: if it is my (Jibril's) work, he commands me with it; if it is the work of Mika'il, he commands him with it; and if it is the work of the Angel of Death, he commands him with it. I said: O Jibril, and over what are you appointed? He said: Over the wind and the armies. I said: Over what is Mika'il appointed? He said: Over the plants and the rain. I said: Over what is the Angel of Death appointed? He said: Over taking the souls. And I thought he had descended only for the establishment of the Hour, and what you saw of me was only out of fear of the establishment of the Hour."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made peace with the people of Khaybar on the terms of every piece of gold and silver, and everything else, except their lives and their offspring. The narrator says: Then al-Rabi' and Kinanah, the two sons of Abu al-Huqayq, were brought, and one of them was the new bridegroom of Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Huyayy (may Allah be pleased with her). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Where are your vessels that used to be borrowed for the weddings of Madinah?" He said: You expelled us and exiled us, so we spent them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Consider what you are saying, for if you two conceal anything from me, I will on that account make your blood and your offspring lawful." The narrator says: Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) called two men of the Ansar and said: "Go to such-and-such a place and look for a small date palm with a marker on its top; pull out that marker, take out those vessels and bring them to me." They went until they brought them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) brought the two forward and struck their necks, and he sent for their offspring. Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) was brought while she was a new bride, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) to take her to the lodging of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) set off and passed by her husband and her brother, both lying slain. When he returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Subhan Allah! What did you intend, O Bilal, in taking a virgin girl past two slain men and showing them to her? Do you have no mercy?" He said: I wanted to burn her heart. The narrator says: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went in to her and spent the night with her. Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) came with his sword and sat beside the tent, and said: If I hear a frightening sound or anything alarms me, I will be close to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator says: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out for Bilal's iqamah and said: "Who is this?" He said: I am Abu Ayyub. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What brings you here at this hour?" He said: O Messenger of Allah, you have taken a virgin girl as your bride whose husband and brother you have killed, so I feared for you, and I thought I would stay close to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said three times: "May Allah have mercy on you, O Abu Ayyub." The narrator says: Then the people talked a great deal about her; some said: She is his slave girl, and some said: She is his wife. When the time of departure came, the people said: Watch the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); if he veils her, she is his wife, and if he does not veil her, she is his slave girl. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) brought her out and veiled her, and he lowered his knee for her and said: "Mount." But out of reverence for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) she refrained from placing her foot on his (peace and blessings be upon him) knee, and she placed her knee on his (peace and blessings be upon him) thigh and mounted. Before that, he (peace and blessings be upon him) had given her the choice either that he take her as a slave girl, or that he free her and marry her. She said: No, rather free me and marry me. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did so.
